Lane Community College Board Of Education
Commends Dr. Mary Spilde For Exemplary Leadership In Difficult Times
College president earns sixth straight outstanding performance evaluation
EUGENE, Ore. - Dr. Mary Spilde, president of Lane Community College, has shown exemplary leadership during a very difficult year, according to the college’s Board of Education.
“Under the circumstances, President Spilde has acted with vision and integrity,” said Jay Bozievich, chair of Lane’s Board of Education. “Dr. Spilde has shown remarkable grace under fire while leading the college through an extraordinary budget crisis. She is truly masterful when working among college stakeholders.”
Commenting in their annual performance evaluation of the president, board members lauded Spilde for her steady leadership during a time of crisis. One board member wrote, “Considering the political climate and the stress of cutting budgets year after year, she manages to still command respect everywhere she goes.” Another wrote, “President Spilde unfailingly represents Lane with integrity and courage.” And another commented “She’s Wonder Woman with a Scottish accent.”
For the sixth year in a row since becoming president of Lane Community College in 2001, Dr. Mary Spilde received an outstanding performance evaluation from the college’s Board of Education. She received high marks in each of the areas including leadership and strategic direction, educational outcomes, board relations, staff supervision, communication, and governance. The board acknowledged the work being done to achieve long-term fiscal sustainability in an environment of disinvestment in higher education. The board unanimously approved the evaluation.
The president received a cost of living increase of 2.46 percent to match the cost of living increase negotiated with Lane’s faculty. In light of severe budget cuts and concessions by the unions and managers, Spilde volunteered for the fourth year to forgo a raise for 12 months and to freeze her own salary. The contract rolls over annually unless the board states otherwise, and is in effect through June 2012 with an option to renew.
