Lane names OCCA Student Scholars
EUGENE - William CJ Johnson of Eugene and Megan Worman of Springfield have been named 2007 Oregon Community College Association Student Scholars. OCCA honors outstanding students from each of Oregon’s two-year colleges every year.
The students were honored at an event at the state capitol in late April. Johnson and Worman were introduced at the Lane Community College Board of Education meeting on May 9.
Johnson, 47, has a 3.542 GPA and is majoring in elementary education with plans to transfer to the University of Oregon. His academic honors include the vice president’s honor roll. His extracurricular activities include coaching Eugene Kidsports basketball and Willamette Valley Babe Ruth baseball. In an essay he wrote, “Thirty years ago, inspired by such teachers as Albert “Buck” Starkey, Claudette Ames, and Fred Brunson, I began my journey to become an elementary school teacher. However, at that time in my life I wasn’t prepared to make the sacrifices necessary to complete my journey. Now, after two divorces, being diagnosed with congestive heart failure, and spending the past 18 months taking classes at Lane Community College, I am now prepared to dedicate myself to making my dream come true. I have two more terms left at LCC before enrolling at the University of Oregon. Once I’ve completed my studies at the UO, I will use the lessons that I’ve learned in life to promote the importance of education. Additionally, I will instill in students, ‘Success means a willingness to be a good leader, staying focused, giving back to the community, and never giving up on your dreams.’”
Worman, 21, has a 4.138 GPA and is majoring in psychology with plans to transfer to the University of Oregon. Her academic honors include the president’s honor roll, All-USA Academic Team Nominee representing Lane, and the National Dean's List. She is vice president of service for Lane’s chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society and she writes for the student newspaper. Worman is spearheading the start-up of Pet Food on Wheels in Lane County, in conjunction with Meals on Wheels. In an essay, she wrote, “I plan to transfer to the University of Oregon and pursue a bachelor's degree in psychology. Eventually I hope to attend law school and work with people who have the least power and voice in our society–individuals who have been disenfranchised, shunned and segregated by social stereotypes and biases. As a civil rights attorney, I hope to help these people fight for their part of the same freedoms and privileges enjoyed by the rest of us. My community college education has already been a valuable asset to this goal in several ways–not the least of which has been the exposure to the stories of those I hope to someday help.”
