Learning Community wins Innovation Award

EUGENE – Lane Community College faculty Margaret Bayless, Jeffery Scott Bird and Bonnie Simoa have won the college’s Innovation of the Year Award for 2006/07 for their Learning Community titled, “Excavating Creativity: Movement, Image and Text.”

The Learning Community integrates Dance 172 (Dancing the Fluid Body 2); Art 231 (Intermediate Drawing); and Writing 122 (Composition: Style and Argument). Students enroll in all three classes, or in Writing and Dancing; or Dancing and Drawing; or Writing and Drawing.

Students use movement, drawing and writing to uncover connections to the creative process, which often lies below the surface of conscious thought. Students learn how to express who they are, what they think and how they experience the world. Instructors often participate in each other’s classes.

Bayless has taught English at Lane since 1992, Bird has taught art at Lane since 2004, and Simoa has taught dance at Lane since 1999.

National research shows that students who take Learning Communities succeed at higher rates than students in stand-alone courses. Learning Communities classes fulfill the same degree and certificate requirements as stand-alone classes.

The Innovation of the Year Award is sponsored by the League for Innovation at member colleges. Award winners are featured at www.league.org. The League is an international organization serving community colleges with approximately 800 member colleges. Lane is one of 20 colleges serving on the League’s board.
