Forum will explore books' themes
EUGENE - The Reading Together project at Lane Community College will hold an interactive educational forum to explore the central themes of each of this year's books, on Thursday, January 25, from 12-2 p.m. in the Center for Meeting and Learning, Building 19, Room 104, main campus in Eugene, 4000 E. 30th Avenue.
The books are Dan O'Brien's' memoir, “Buffalo for the Broken Heart: Restoring Life to a Black Hills Ranch,” and N. Scott Momaday's, “The Man Made of Words: Essays, Stories, Passages.”
"People should find this discussion interesting, whether they have read both, one or none of the Reading Together books," says project coordinator Ellen Cantor. "We'll be handing out summaries, giving adequate context, and introducing subjects and ideas that have relevance far beyond the world of the books. We'll be doing this in a way that we hope will engender lively discussions among all who attend."
The theme of this year's project, Navigating the Changing Terrain, will help shape this discussion. Since each individual experience of change constitutes a narrative, the discussion will examine the way the books explore and develop the following concerns about "story" -- What do we do when, for any variety of reasons, our (individual, cultural, social) story doesn't work anymore? How do we change our story? How do we conceive a new vision? How do we implement it? How do we determine if it is sustainable or workable? When employing this lens, both of the Reading Together books can be viewed as a rubric for undergoing the process of change.
The presentation is free and open to the public. For more information contact Ellen Cantor at (541) 463-3660 or cantore@lanecc.edu or visit 2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/readingtogether
