New RV job-training program at Lane is open to adults and high school students

EUGENE - With a growing number of jobs available, Lane County RV manufacturers are looking for qualified workers. Starting in January, Lane Community College students will be able to learn the required skills to be successful in those jobs.

The college is offering a new five-month training program winter term. Recreational Vehicle Manufacturing will develop the basic skills needed by entry-level workers in Lane County's RV manufacturing plants. High school students and adults who complete the eight-credit program will be qualified to apply for jobs at Country Coach, Monaco, and Marathon, the three manufacturers who are partners in the program.

More than 4,500 people are employed in the RV manufacturing industry in Lane County. With an annual turnover rate of 10 percent, manufacturers are looking for 450 new workers each year.

Students' investment will pay off quickly. The estimated total cost for two terms of tuition and fees is between $700 and $750. A full-time employee earning at least $10 per hour will earn that much or more in the first two-week pay period after employment.

Classes begin January 8, 2007, and continue through early June. Students will choose between two tracks: (1) welding focus (2) electrical systems and cabling focus. Both tracks include required courses in trade skills fundamentals and, if indicated, computations and measurements used in manufacturing environments. Classes will meet from 1 to 3 p.m., Mondays through Thursdays, at Lane's 30th Avenue campus, supplemented by field trips. For more information about the electrical systems and cabling track, contact Dan Call by e-mail at calld@lanecc.edu or by phone at 463-5389. Questions about the welding track should be directed to Rich Pakkala at 463-5001 or pakkalar@lanecc.edu.

Students must meet normal admissions and testing requirements for credit classes, including passing standard college placement tests. High school students are eligible to participate with the approval of their counselors through the Regional Technical Education Consortium (RTEC), which was initiated by Lane.

For information on how to apply, go to 2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu and click on "Five Steps to Getting Started at Lane." Register for MFG 122 RV Manufacturing-Electrical (CRN 33147) or WLD 105 Fundamentals of Fabrication and Welding (CRN 32936). RV students also are required to take Trade Skills Fundamentals RTEC 100 (CRN 32925).
