EUGENE, OR - Lane Community College student Noah Guadagni just returned from six months in South America, earning college credit through Lane's new international work experience program. Another Lane student is working in ecotourism at O'Reilly's Rainforest Guesthouse in Australia. In January two more students will begin their internships: working for the United Nations Development Fund for Women in Ecuador; and working at the Nga Manu Nature Reserve in New Zealand.

Lane students now have access to internships around the world through the Oregon University System IE3 Global Internships program. The IE3 website describes over 230 internship opportunities in 40 countries (see http://ie3global.oregonstate.edu/ie3/).

Lane is the only community college in the IE3 program.

Application deadlines for IE3 internships are fast approaching: November 15 for spring term 2007, and January 25 for summer term 2007.

Al King, Lane's international co-op coordinator, says international work experience is invaluable in today's global economy. He encourages students to think about "Where in the world do you want to work?" He recommends reviewing the IE3 website and then contacting him at 463-5883 or kinga@lanecc.edu for more information.

Noah Guadagni taught English to street kids in Recife, Brazil, and did work-exchange at an eco-tourism retreat. In his summary report he wrote, "My host mom in Brazil is the director of a social organization called Movimento Pró Criança, which offers a variety of arts and music based classes for at-risk or impoverished youth. Its three locations in Recife offer a creative and safe outlet to children who might otherwise face the crime and exploitation of the streets. I was a volunteer English teacher and my job was to introduce my language to the bright and inquisitive minds of Pró Criança's students, who ranged in age from 10 to 16 years old. More than a teacher, I needed to be a role model to them, and a safe person that could offer these kids the time and attention that so often couldn't be spared by the parents and adults in their lives."

"I came to realize more and more that my English lessons were really just a backdrop upon which the more essential elements of human interaction were played out. Things like discovery, challenge, creativity and laughter were the hidden curriculum, as my students and I would teach each other life lessons, big and small, whether deliberately or not. I think I probably learned the most, simply from the great reciprocal nature of teaching."
