LCC Reading Together presents acclaimed poets Barbara Ras and Eugene Gloria

EUGENE - In conjunction with the Lane Community College Reading Together 2006-07 theme, Navigating the Changing Terrain, critically acclaimed poets Barbara Ras and Eugene Gloria will read from their work on Wednesday, November 8, from 10-11:30 a.m., in the Center for Meeting and Learning, Building 19, Room 226, main campus in Eugene, 4000 E. 30th Avenue. The reading will be followed by a Q&A session. The poets read again at 7 p.m. at Tsunami Books, 2585 Willamette Street in Eugene.

Ras won the 1997 Walt Whitman Award and the Kate Tufts Discovery Award for her book, "Bite Every Sorrow." Her new book, "One Hidden Stuff," is published by Penguin. Booklist reviewer Donna Seaman wrote, "Passionate, frank, and witty, Ras reports on conflagrations personal and archetypal in a warming world perpetually in love and at war. Her bittersweet, immediate, and wise lyrics are long-lined and punctuated with glissandos and unexpected leaps. Tough-minded, funny, and sensuous, Ras' vital poems remind us of all that we're given on this planet and how recklessly we devour it."

Gloria was born in Manila, Philippines, and raised in San Francisco. His first collection of poems, "Drivers at the Short-Time Motel," was a winner of the 1999 National Poetry Series and 2001 Asian American Literary Award. His new book, "Hoodlum Birds," draws from his experience of retracing the Camino de Santiago de Compostela, the famous pilgrimage in Spain, during which he examines the intersecting territories of interior self, spirit, religion, and culture. Former Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky wrote in a Washington Post review that Gloria's poetry "demonstrates a central quality of poetry: depth of language ... Gloria brings the historical and the contemporary into fresh, vivid relation."
