President Mary Spilde earns fifth straight outstanding performance evaluation

EUGENE, OR - Lane Community College President Mary Spilde received her fifth straight outstanding performance evaluation from the Board of Education since becoming president in 2001.
The president received high marks in each of seven areas including leadership and strategic direction, educational outcomes, board relations, financial management, staff supervision, communication, and governance. Her communication skills earned a perfect score and she was strongly commended for compassionate leadership in an extremely difficult budget year.
Board member Roger Hall commented on behalf of the board at its July 19 meeting:
"Having completed the annual evaluation of the president, the Lane Community College Board of Education concludes Mary Spilde continues to perform her duties with passion and excellence.
"Given the difficulties the college faced in building next year's budget, the consistently high ratings speak to her extraordinary leadership abilities. Mary has already taken steps to strengthen the area of financial management with the hiring of a new financial expert in college finance and recognizes the need for more frequent tracking and reporting of the college's financial status. Throughout, the evaluation noted Mary's effective communication skills and consistent focus upon the college's mission and improving learning.
"Lane Community College is fortunate to have a president of such high quality. Her expertise is recognized by other leaders at the state and national levels, as exemplified in her election to the national board of the AACC [American Community College Association]."
The board unanimously accepted the evaluation.
The board authorized a salary increase, however, the president has not decided whether to accept an increase. The amount will be negotiated, not to exceed the average percentage awarded other employee groups. Her contract rolls over annually unless the board states otherwise and is in effect through June 2012 with option to renew.
