LCC Board of Education adopts 2006/07 budget
EUGENE, OR - The Lane Community College Board of Education adopted the 2006/07 budget by unanimous vote at its June 14 meeting.
The budget includes a general fund of $75 million, a decrease of 8.5 percent from the 2005/06 adopted budget of $82 million.
A $6 million shortfall was addressed primarily through position reductions. There were no program reductions and no tuition increases beyond an annual inflationary adjustment of $2.50 per credit hour, from $67 to $69.50 per credit hour, effective July 1.
Position reductions included 64 support staff positions consisting of 37 eliminations, 11 reductions, and 16 vacancies. In addition, 5 management positions and 18 faculty vacancies were affected. Reductions also were made in materials and services, equipment replacement, and capital projects.
President Mary Spilde said the loss of critical staff has a personal impact as well as limiting services outside the classroom.
Another $5 to $6 million deficit is expected in 2007/08.
Lane will continue to limit expenses and increase enrollment. The college also will consider a fundamental redesign of its work processes and the way it delivers instruction. The board will seek voter approval of a local option levy in November. If passed, the levy would raise about $1 million for five years beginning July 2007.
The disinvestment in public education continues to be a major concern for the college and the community. As the need for a skilled and educated workforce grows, funding for higher education continues to decline.
