EUGENE - Poet Lucille Clifton will speak at Lane Community College on Thursday, May 4. She will give an address and reading at 10 a.m., followed by a Q&A session in the Performance Hall, Building 6. She also will be available for informal discussion and more Q&A from 2:30-3:30 p.m. in the Center for Meeting and Learning, Building 19, Room 104. Both events are free and open to the public, sponsored by the Reading Together Project at Lane.
Reading Together is engaging students and staff in the reading of Clifton’s “Blessing the Boats: New and Selected Poems 1988-2000,” as part of this year’s project. The volume is a National Book Award winner. Clifton has written more than 10 books of poetry, essays and memoir, as well as numerous children's books. She is the recipient of numerous awards.
Clifton will address the project’s 2005/06 theme of “Circling Home: Stories and Sustainable Communities,” by reading from her work and describing her sense of story and its relationship to community. "I've always been a person who found more interesting the stories between the stories,” says Clifton. “I've always wondered the hows and the whys to things. Why is this like this? What has gone into making us who we are?"
