Native American storyteller Esther Stutzman and Oregon pioneer descendent Shannon Applegate to present
EUGENE - A presentation by Yoncalla Kalapuya and Coos elder and storyteller Esther Stutzman, and Oregon pioneer descendent and author Shannon Applegate, will be held Tuesday, April 25 from 10-11:30 a.m. in the Center for Meeting and Learning, Building 19, Room 104, Lane Community College main campus. The presentation is sponsored by the Reading Together project.
This is a collaborative presentation about the historical relationship forged between the Oregon pioneer Applegate family and the Yoncalla band of the Kalapuya peoples. This relationship consists of a continuing unfolding story, forged through generations, successfully bridging cultures. The contentious cultural context made this a very challenging proposition, and Stutzman and Applegate will speak to these challenges, as well as the evolving rewards of this relationship. People are welcome to come late or leave early as schedule permits.
Reading Together engages students and the community in the reading of the same books under a common theme, accompanied by discussions and events. This year's theme is "Circling Home: Stories and Sustainable Communities," and the selections are Terry Tempest Williams' memoir, "Refuge: An Unnatural History of Family and Place" and Lucille Clifton's, "Blessing the Boats: New and Selected Poems 1988-2000." Reading Together is in its third year. For more information, contact Cantor at (541) 463-3660 or visit 2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/readingtogether/
