LCC-OSU degree partnership expands opportunities for students

Mary Spilde and Ed Ray
Lane Community College President Mary Spilde and Oregon State University President Ed Ray sign a degree partnership agreement that allows students to be jointly admitted and concurrently enrolled. Students can attend classes and apply for financial aid to cover their educational costs at both institutions.

EUGENE - Lane Community College President Mary Spilde and Oregon State University President Ed Ray signed the LCC-OSU degree partnership agreement in a ceremony held in the Lane boardroom on March 9. State Representatives Phil Barnhart, Terry Beyer and Debi Farr were among those who attended.

"This is about students," said President Mary Spilde. "This partnership will help students move more easily through the education continuum. It's good for our economy and society to have productive, educated citizens." President Ray added that since OSU started its first degree partnership with Linn Benton Community College in 1998, 4,000 students have participated, with more than 1,000 completing baccalaureate degrees. Lane is the 12th community college to join the program.

The state representatives praised the collaboration and leadership behind the partnership.

Previously known as dual enrollment, the degree partnership program is intended to increase access to higher education, improve student success, and encourage completion of a four-year degree. Students are jointly admitted and concurrently enrolled. They can attend classes and apply to receive financial aid to cover their educational costs at both institutions. In addition, LCC and OSU will work to increase the number of Lane courses and programs that meet general education and program requirements at OSU.

The program officially begins summer term 2006 and application deadline is May 26. Students may apply now from the OSU website http://oregonstate.edu/partnerships/students/
