LCC ceramics pre-conference brings four renowned artists to Eugene
EUGENE,OR - The Ceramic Art Student Association at Lane Community College will host a two-day workshop March 6-7 prior to the 40th annual National Council for Education in the Ceramic Arts conference in Portland March 8-11. "The Ceramic Surface: 4 Approaches," will be held 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day in the Center for Meeting and Learning, Building 19, LCC main campus in Eugene. The event offers lectures, demonstrations, and a panel discussion.
Four internationally known artists will present, including Katrina Chaytor, associate professor of ceramic arts, Alberta College of Art and Design; John Glick, studio potter, Plum Tree Pottery, Farmington Hills, Michigan; Matthew Metz, studio potter, Alfred, New York and Houston, Minnesota; and Susanne Stephenson, studio artist, and retired instructor, Eastern Michigan University. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Robert Poor, art historian, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis.
Four ceramic exhibitions will be presented in conjunction with the conference and all are open and free to the public. The conference show, "The Ceramic Surface-4 Approaches," will be hosted by the Opus6 Gallery and will feature the work of the four artists presenting at the conference, John Glick, Susanne Stephenson, Matt Metz, and Katrina Chaytor. Eugene's clay organization, Local Clay, will have a group show at DIVA galleries; White Lotus Gallery will host an invitational teapot show; and Laneís own art gallery will host ìClay Lane,î an exhibit of LCC Ceramics Past and Present.
A bluegrass dance will be held at the WOW hall Tuesday, March 7 to raise funds for the Ceramic Art Student Association. Tickets are $7 at the hallís box office or at the door.
"We have two primary goals in presenting this pre-conference event," says Lane instructor Thomas Rohr. "First, to bring internationally renowned artists here to present their work, techniques and ideas to our community in an educational forum. Second, to bring artists, educators and students from around the country and the world to Eugene to showcase our schools and local ceramic community."
