LCC nursing students team up with McMenamin's to raise funds for Lane's new SimMan simulation lab

EUGENE - Nursing students from Lane Community College invite the community to McMenamin's North Bank Restaurant on Monday, February 20, to help raise funds for the new simulation lab at Lane. The restaurant will donate half of all proceeds to the nursing program, from 5 p.m. until closing that evening.

The simulation lab is a replica of a hospital room where SimMan, a simulation mannequin, is used by nursing students to practice skills and procedures. He is life-like and computer-controlled and is capable of displaying symptoms of a wide range of disease processes. Students practice a variety of skills on SimMan, from advanced procedures such as starting an IV or setting up and monitoring blood transfusions, to more basic skills such as taking blood pressure. Students can monitor the after-effects of the performed skills. For example, if a miscalculation in the dosage of a medication occurs, the computer will change the vital signs of the mannequin to reflect a drug over- or under-dose, giving the lesson of the importance of double-checking calculations, without endangering an actual patient.

Students want to purchase accessory equipment for the SimMan lab. Their wish list includes IV pumps, hospital beds, disposable bags and tubing, syringes, a camera to record simulations for later review, an active suction setup, and more.

Instructor Julia Munkvold says simulated clinical experiences allow students to learn and practice real-world clinical situations and treatments in a controlled lab setting. Munkvold has completed post-graduate work in simulation nursing education at Oregon Health Sciences University

McMenamin's North Bank Restaurant is located on the banks of the Willamette River at 22 Club Road in Eugene; the phone number is 343-5622.
