LCC student theater association presents, “The Good Doctor”
EUGENE - Lane Student Productions Association presents Neil Simon’s “The Good Doctor” on Fridays and Saturdays from February 3 through 18 at 8 p.m. in the intimate Blue Door Theatre, Lane Community College main campus, Building 6, 4000 E. 30 Avenue, Eugene. Additional shows will be held Sunday, February 12, at 2 p.m. and Thursday, February 16, at 8 p.m.
Based on the short stories of Anton Chekhov, “The Good Doctor” is a collection of a dozen comedic vignettes ranging from romantic to poignant and taking place during turn of the 20th century in Russia. Inspired by Chekhov, Neil Simon’s 1973 Broadway production of “The Good Doctor” was praised by The New York Times, “there is much fun here . . . Mr. Simon’s comic fancy is admirable.”
Simon, though, thought his peers viewed him simply as “charming and clever.” The play pokes fun at his (and Chekhov’s) insecurities as a writer through the words and actions of The Narrator, a central character who weaves the writer’s imagined stories together.
Chock-full of other memorable characters such as Cherdyakov, a civil servant who’s in a slight predicament due to an interrupting sneeze; the debonair seducer Peter Semyonch who meets the challenge of a lifetime; and a father, quite liberal in his thinking, who decides to introduce his son to the mysteries of sex by escorting his young lad to a local brothel.
Twenty-six actors make up the student-produced ensemble. The play is directed by Patrick Torelle. Set design is by Skip Hubbard.
Admission is $8 students and seniors; $10 adults. For tickets, call 463-5761.
