LCC Foundation offers hundreds of scholarship opportunities
EUGENE - If you think you don't qualify for financial aid, think again: You may be eligible for one of hundreds of student scholarships offered through the Lane Community College Foundation.
Are you a health occupations student at Lane Community College's Florence Outreach Center? A full- or part-time diesel technology student at Lane? A student at Lane's Cottage Grove Outreach Center? A single mother living in Junction City who's a second year student at Lane? If so, there's a scholarship opportunity for you. Last year, the Foundation awarded 383 scholarships worth a total of $470,000 to help keep education accessible to area residents.
A list of scholarships appears in Lane's Scholarship Opportunities book, now available on Lane's main campus in Career and Employment Services, Building 1, Room 102, and from Lane County high school guidance counselors. The list, and a scholarship application form, are also available online at 2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/foundation. Most scholarships have an application deadline of March 13 for awards received in the fall.
In addition to the private scholarships listed in the Scholarship Opportunities book, direct awards to Lane students are available from a variety of organizations. Information about other organizations that offer scholarships and grants can be obtained from Lane Career and Employment Services (541-463-5167), high school guidance counselors, libraries and scholarship search Web sites, such as www.fastweb.com.
Scholarships and financial aid will also be the topic of a workshop Saturday, Jan. 21, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the main campus of Lane Community College, Building 17, Room 308. The free event is open to students, parents and other interested individuals. Although the workshop is free, advance registration is required to assure space for the popular, limited-seating event.
Participants will learn about print materials and computer databases for scholarship research, the federal financial aid process, and Oregon Student Assistance Commission scholarships. They will also organize a plan for their scholarship search and get tips for writing high quality essays and applications.
Lane students with an L number (user ID) may register for the workshop through ExpressLane at 2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu and list registration number 32953. All others must call Lane's Continuing Education Department at 463-5252 to register. Details are available in Lane's winter schedule of classes.
