Salzman and Janssen-Belitz display "Hidden Fears and Hope" at LCC art gallery
EUGENE, OR - The Art Department Gallery at Lane Community College presents "Hidden Fears and Hope" by Jennifer Salzman and Monique Janssen-Belitz, January 9 through 31. The exhibit features photography, oil and watercolor paintings.
Salzman's traditional black and white photographs convey a message of awareness; not simply of the uncomfortable, or the difficult, but also the awareness of the beauty and love of childhood. As a parent, Salzman faces fears and concerns involving forces from the outside world. Her work centers around opposing influences, the love and protection she feels as a parent and the fear and worry of seeing her children affected by things beyond her control. Working in traditional photographic processes is important to the construction of her images. This process gives a strong foundation to the emotions and the passing of time. Salzman wants the viewer to see beauty in the world of a child and the fears of that world being shattered.
Janssen-Belitz was born in the Netherlands and was educated primarily in Germany, including training as an art teacher at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich. Janssen-Belitz came to the U.S. in 1985 and moved to Oregon in 1987. She has worked as a painter and printmaker for more than 25 years. The majority of Janssen-Belitz's work is oil on canvas. Her oil paintings are mainly a series of landscapes depicting Oregon scenery which also reflect the inner landscapes of personal emotions. Her watercolors are based on small pencil sketches, with and without color washes, done on site. These include sketches from Germany, the Olympic Peninsula and the Oregon High Desert.
The Lane Community College Art Department Gallery is located in Building 11 on main campus, 4000 E. 30th Avenue in Eugene. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and Fridays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information call 463-5409.###
