LCC forms partnership with ENERGY STAR(r)

EUGENE - Lane Community College has joined a nationwide effort to eliminate energy waste through the voluntary implementation of improved energy management practices and technologies in a partnership with ENERGY STAR(r), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's voluntary program that promotes energy efficient solutions to help save money while protecting the environment. In 2004 alone, ENERGY STAR(r) partners saved enough energy to power 24 million homes and avoid greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those from 20 million cars, all while saving $10 billion.

Lane is the second college in Oregon to partner with ENERGY STAR(r); Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls has also joined the effort.

Marie Matsen, vice president for college operations, believes in the efforts Lane makes to conserve energy benefit the natural environment while strengthening the college's bottom line. "Investing in energy conservation and reducing Lane's use of non-renewable energy sources is a very important component of our long-term financial plan and the core of our overall sustainability efforts. We want Lane to be a shining example of good stewardship of public resources, both environmental and financial," she says.

As an ENERGY STAR(r) partner, Lane has committed to monitor and measure its energy performance and to promote increased energy efficiency at its Florence, Cottage Grove and Eugene locations. Lane also will educate staff and the public about the importance of partnering with ENERGY STAR(r).

Formed in 2004, Lane's Sustainability Department includes three full time staff as well as part-time staff and student workers. The staff includes a recycling and surplus property coordinator, an energy and indoor environmental quality analyst, and a sustainability coordinator. The department is certifying its first green buildings in the family and child care program, under the U.S. Green Building Council, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Existing Building Program. Close attention will be given to superior energy performance using ENERGY STAR(r).
