LCC students to observe Constitution Day
EUGENE, OR - The founding fathers didn't use water balloons, but they would have liked to, says Jeremy Riel, president of the Associated Students of Lane Community College.
ASLCC will hold Constitution Day on Wednesday, October 5, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on main campus. Events include a speaker panel at noon in the Center Building cafeteria with state legislators and LCC Board of Education members discussing the constitution, and a water balloon fight at 1 p.m. on Bristow Square with students re-enacting the hostilities between the federalists and anti-federalists. The rest of the day offers workshops and other activities.
Last year, federal lawmakers passed Public Law 108-447 requiring all higher education institutions that receive Department of Education funds to implement an educational program relating to the United States Constitution. Constitution Day was designated as September 17 and Lane's library created a special display on the constitution. Since the 17th fell on a Saturday prior to fall term this year, Riel worked with instructional administrators and political science faculty to develop a later event for students and staff.
