Health records technology and medical office assistant orientation to be held at LCC Florence Center
EUGENE, OR ñ A drop-in orientation for students interested in the Health Records Technology and Medical Office Assistant programs at Lane Community College will be held Tuesday, August 16, at 10 a.m., at the LCC Florence Center, 3149 Oak Street.Lane offers one-year certificates in Health Records Technology and Medical Office Assisting.
HRT graduates are employed by hospitals, nursing homes, insurance companies, home health agencies, and ancillary medical service offices. Advances in medical science, legislative reforms, computerization, and the need to manage health care delivery systems and health care costs have created a growing demand for information professionals with the knowledge and skills to process, analyze, and distribute health care information. Entry level wages range from $9 to $9.50 per hour and up, usually with excellent benefits, for health records technicians.
MOAs work primarily in ambulatory settings such as medical offices and clinics and perform administrative and clinical procedures. Lane MOA graduates are eligible to take the certification examination (CMA) sponsored by the American Association of Medical Assistants and the National Board of Medical Examiners. Only individuals who hold a certificate from a medical assisting program accredited by CAAHEP such as Laneís are eligible to take the basic certification examination. Certification is not currently required for initial employment by local employers, but is becoming highly recommended within the local medical community. Employment outlook for MOA professionals is excellent, with more than 122,000 additional positions added nationally by 2005. Wages are $23,000-40,000 annually.
