EUGENE, OR - The Rites of Passage Summer Academies will be held July 5-August 5 at Lane Community College main campus in Eugene. A capstone ceremony featuring dramatic presentations by students including music, recitations, dance and film, will be held Friday, August 5, from 6-8:30 p.m., in the Center for Meeting and Learning, Building 19. The public is encouraged to attend.
Rites of Passage is designed to inform and inspire high school and middle school students of color. Instruction in cultural history, literature, folklore and traditions is offered in four academies: the African American Rites of Passage, Pan Asian American Rites of Passage, Umista Native American Rites of Passage, and Puertas Abiertas Latino/Latina Rites of Passage.
The program was founded in 1996 with the African American Rites of Passage Summer Academy. The Pan Asian program was added in 2001, and the Native American and Latino/Latina programs were added in 2002. More than 250 students have participated over the last decade. This year, 80 students are enrolled.###
