Young Women in Science event designed to inspire middle school girls
EUGENE, OR - "It has been shown that girls, even those with high test scores and good performance, start to lose interest in science in middle school," says Lane Community College biology instructor Kit Lacy.
That's why Lane science faculty and students have invited about 25 middle school girls from Pleasant Hill area schools for a Young Women in Science afternoon on Tuesday, May 24, from 3:30 p.m. to about 6 p.m. Women science students at Lane have created a variety of hands-on science activities for the middle school girls to introduce them to science concepts in biology, physiology and geology.
"This event will introduce the girls to Lane and show them that many women indeed enjoy science and excel at it," says Lacy. "We hope that our students will be role models to these middle school girls and encourage them in science."
The girls will start out at the Women's Center in Building 1 and then visit science labs and classrooms in Building 16 for activities and information.
