EUGENE, OR – “The creative spirit ranks among Lane’s greatest resources,” wrote the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities in a report reaffirming Lane’s accreditation.
Reaffirmation follows a two-year comprehensive self-study, a site visit in October, and a meeting with the full commission at its Redmond, Wash., headquarters attended by President Mary Spilde and Vice President Sonya Christian. The college received the commission’s letter of reaffirmation in late January.
“The visiting team affirmed that Lane is a very strong college and I am very proud of all the good work that goes on here,” said President Spilde.
Lane was given three commendations and two recommendations.
One commendation recognizes the commitment of faculty, staff and administration while facing budget and enrollment challenges and transitioning to a new campus governance structure. The second commendation is for community service and entrepreneurial efforts to sustain and develop new educational programs. The third commendation recognizes Lane for creating mutually beneficial community partnerships to enhance educational opportunities. NCCU noted high faculty morale and involvement in scholarship, research, artistic creation, and entrepreneurial efforts.
One recommendation is to improve the consistency of part-time faculty evaluations. The other is to better assess educational programs in terms of student outcomes and improve programs as indicated by assessment.
The 10-year reaffirmation requires that Lane write a focused interim report on the two recommendations and host a commission representative in spring 2007.
NWCCU is the regional accrediting authority for higher education in a seven-state region including Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. It is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education.
