Works by 22 Lane Community College full-time and part-time art and applied design instructors will be exhibited in Artists Who Teach March 3 through April 30 at the DIVA galleries, 110 W. Broadway in Eugene. The exhibit is planned to celebrate the college's 40th anniversary and its outstanding arts programs.
An opening reception for Artists Who Teach will be held Friday, March 4, from 5 to 9 p.m., and will showcase the breadth of talent of Lane's Division of the Arts. A student quartet will provide musical entertainment; dance instructor Bonnie Simoa will perform a solo piece she choreographed; and theater arts students will be in costume and in character from the campus production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. In addition, culinary arts students will prepare and serve hors d'oeuvres. The exhibit itself will feature a broad spectrum of media, including paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings, photographs, ceramics and fiber art.
A second reception will be held on Friday, April 1, from 5 to 9 p.m. Members of Lane's arts faculty will be on hand to discuss their works and their programs.
According to Rick Williams, chair of Lane's Division of Arts, the DIVA exhibit will provide an opportunity to launch a new initiative for his division. "The ArtWorks campaign will develop awareness of the way that arts education works to enhance creativity, learning, overall intelligence, academic and professional performance and general well being," he says.
Two presentations will also be held in conjunction with Artists Who Teach. The first, to be held at DIVA on Friday, March 18, from 5 to 7:30 p.m., will feature a discussion of Lane's Art and Applied Design department, its curriculum and its philosophy. On hand will be Rick Williams, as well as the faculty artists to discuss their works and answer questions.
The second presentation, scheduled for Friday, April 15, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at DIVA, will focus on the Music, Dance and Theatre Arts Department. Williams and faculty members will perform, and will discuss and answer questions about the performing arts at Lane.
DIVA, the Downtown Initiative for the Visual Arts, is Eugene's newest gallery. Its hours are Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 6 p.m., and Sunday, 1 to 4 p.m.
