Native American students to share Smithsonian experience
EUGENE, OR - Native American students at Lane Community College will present slides, video and personal stories of their participation in the September 2004 opening ceremonies for the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian. The presentation will be held Friday, January 28, from 7-8 p.m. in Building 19, Rooms 102-103, on Lane main campus, 4000 E. 30th Avenue in Eugene.
"Many of the students who traveled to Washington D.C. and toured the Museum of the American Indian had the chance to identify their cultural roots, or deepen their understanding of their tribe," says Lane Student Life and Leadership Director Barb Delansky. The students also will describe their experience participating in the Native Nations Procession, which a Smithsonian news release said included "more than 25,000 Native Americans from more than 500 tribes and Native communities from throughout North Central and South America."
Some students and local tribal members will wear Native American regalia. There will be drumming, flute music, refreshments and descriptions of totem poles honoring the nation’s military veterans, being carved by a local Native American artist for the long house planned for main campus.
