LCC encouraged by Bush's workforce training plans
EUGENE - "We're gratified and encouraged to see that President Bush recognizes the importance of community colleges nationally in workforce development," said Lane Community College President Mary Spilde in response to Tuesday's State of the Union address. In the address, Bush called for expanding workforce training capacity at community colleges.
"Lane is the premier provider of workforce and business training
in Lane County," said Spilde. "We know that a trained workforce
is a community's best asset to attract, develop and support business and
industry. Federal assistance in supporting our local training efforts
is very important."
Lane offers more than 40 professional technical degree and certificate
programs to prepare individuals for careers. The college also assists
small businesses and large employers. Since July 2003, for example, more
than 1,300 small business owners have consulted the college's BizCenter,
and 21 employers have contracted for customized training for their employees.
Founded in 1982, the BizCenter is a member of the Oregon Small Business
Development Center Network and is actively involved in the economic development
efforts of Lane County and the State of Oregon.
In addition to providing training, Lane partners with organizations such
as the Lane Workforce Network and local chambers of commerce to foster
economic development opportunities.
The American Association of Community Colleges also welcomed Bush's address.
AACC President George R. Boggs said he hopes this "marks the beginning
of a new federal commitment to community colleges and their role in promoting
economic growth and individual prosperity.
