League reaffirms Lane’s national excellence
EUGENE - Lane Community College remains one of only 19 board member colleges
in the 700-member League for Innovation in the Community College, following
a unanimous vote of the League board at its spring meeting.
"After reviewing Lane's stellar written report and completing our
site visit,” says League president and CEO Mark Milliron, “there
was strong and unanimous support for the continued League for Innovation
board membership of Lane Community College. With compelling innovations
like their Strategic Learning Initiative, Cooperative Education offerings,
and Rites of Passage Programs, the board felt that Dr. Mary Spilde and
the entire Lane team continue to shine as leaders in the community college
movement."
Lane has been a board member for many years and is the only League college in Oregon. Board member colleges must reapply for board status when they have a change of president.
Lane began the re-application process after Dr. Mary Spilde became president in August 2001. An extensive self-study was conducted and published in a 106-page report which was submitted to the League in October 2002.
The next step was a site visit from Milliron and two colleagues, Dr. Peter Boyse, League board chair and president of Delta College; and Dr. Henry Shannon, League board member and chancellor of St. Louis Community College, on January 27 and 28. The visitors met with Lane Community College Board of Education members, faculty, administrators, staff and students to review innovative projects and practices.
The final step was the League board vote to continue Lane’s board member status.
The League defines itself as “the only major international organization specifically committed to improving community colleges through innovation, experimentation, and institutional transformation.” For more information about Lane’s role in the League, see the web at: http://2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/league/index.htm
