LCC board endorses Measure 28
EUGENE - The Lane Community College Board of Education endorsed Ballot Measure 28 at its December 11 meeting by 7-0 vote in the form of a formal resolution. The text of the resolution follows:
RESOLUTION
NO. 477
Endorsement of Ballot Measure 28
To respond to the State’s growing budget deficit the legislature
has placed Ballot Measure 28 before the voters in January 2003. The measure
increases personal and corporate income tax rates for three years by one
half of a percentage point.
--WHEREAS, the tax increases imposed by Measure 28 are necessary and affordable;
and
--WHEREAS, economic development is dependent upon an educated citizenry,
and increases in tuition and decreases in available classes reduce affordability
and accessibility to education that will adversely impact the economy
of Oregon, that is presently in a recession; and
--WHEREAS, failure of measure will require Lane Community College to eliminate
243 classes from its schedule spring term and increase tuition for the
second time this year; and
--WHEREAS, the deductibility of state income taxes from federal taxes
means more taxes stay in state and limits the amount an individual will
pay; and
--WHEREAS, previous budget reductions at Lane Community College have created
greater efficiencies, and the state’s latest projections show even
greater deficits; and
--WHEREAS, property tax limitations have decreased the ability of Lane
Community College to control revenues, and the college must rely upon
state revenues to maintain comprehensive educational offerings; and
--WHEREAS, the legislature is unable to resolve the budget crises without
a vote of the people;
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Lane Community College Board of Education
supports the passage of Measure 28.
Passed and approved this eleventh day of December 2002.
