LCC holiday events show community's cultural diversity
EUGENE - Holiday events scheduled by Lane Community College and community groups for Friday and Saturday, December 6 and 7, offer a rich multicultural experience
Lane's Black
Student Union has partnered with the Jefferson Middle School African American
Club, Umoja Cultural Club, Eugene Kwanzaa Coalition, and Churchill High
School Black Student Union, to present the Fourth Annual Pre-Kwanzaa Celebration
on Friday, December 6, at 6 p.m. in the Jefferson Middle School auditorium
at 1650 West 22nd Avenue in Eugene. The event will feature Wawkuma, a
West African drum and dance troupe, crafts, silent auction, Kwanzaa ceremony,
and more. For more information call 687-3221. Admission is free.
Lane's Native American Student Association will host its annual Pow-Wow
on Saturday, December 7, with grand entries at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m., in the
main gym, Building 5. This event features Native American dancing, drumming,
traditional dress, crafts, foods and more. For more information contact
the NASA office at 463-3235. Admission is free.
Lane's Diversity Committee and Multi-Cultural Center has partnered with
the Eugene Middle East Peace Group, Temple Beth Israel, University of
Oregon Muslim Student Association, Islamic Cultural Center, and UO Hillel
to present the Third Annual Festival of Light and Renewal celebrating
Eid el Fitr, the Islamic holiday marking the end of Ramadan, and Chanukah,
the Jewish winter festival of light, on Saturday, December 7, from 5-9
p.m. in the cafeteria, Center Building. The event theme, "We Refuse
to Be Enemies," infuses a variety of activities such as a lighting
of candles, speeches, foods, singing, and children's activities. For more
information, call Susan Mathews at 463-3245. A sliding scale donation
of $5 to $15 will be asked to raise money for a Palestinian-Israeli youth
group and magazine.
