Native American ceremony to begin camas planting party at LCC
EUGENE - Approximately 400 camas bulbs and seeds of other native wildflowers including madia will be planted in a ceremony and work party on Friday, November 8, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Lane Community College main campus in Eugene, in the native landscape meadow west of Building 16 (Science/Math) on the south side of camp
A Native American ceremony of drumming and song will start the activities, followed by information about camas cultivation in the Willamette Valley. Camas and madia are culturally significant plants to the indigenous people of this area, say biology instructors Jerry Hall and Gail Baker, who are coordinating the event.
Participating in the work party will be LCC Ecology Group students, members of the Native American community, and others. The instructors invite public participation and ask everyone to bring their own trowel.
Bulbs were donated by the Eugene Stream Team.
