Veto leaves Lane bracing for more funding cuts
EUGENE - Lane Community
College would sustain a 25 percent state funding cut of $8 million this
year unless legislators override Governor John Kitzhaber's veto announced
on Wednesday. Even with an override, Lane expects to lose at least $2
million.
The funding cuts would be in addition to the $5 million reduction already
in effect this year, following last spring's budget shortfall addressed
through service reductions and tuition and fee increases.
Administrators issued a memo to employees this morning explaining the effect of the veto and that the next step is to see what legislators will do. "While we understand the governor's concern that borrowing from the future to pay for the present leaves long-term funding for education in worse shape next year," said the memo, "a reduction of $8 million for Lane now, on top of the $5 million in reductions already made in the current year, would have a drastic effect on the college. The Executive Team and Board will be examining all possible options for addressing an additional shortfall, including increasing revenues and reducing expenditures. However, we will wait for the results of the special legislative session which begins August 16 before before making any final decisions."
Administrators are
hopeful that the governor and legislators reach resolution before fall
term registration begins on September 3.
