The League student art competition began in 1987 to provide a means to showcase a selection of the best works being created by community college students. The student art competition is hosted on a rotating basis by each of the League Board colleges.
Lane students have submitted work in each competition and have been the recipient of numerous awards. The 1997-98 Student Art Competition was hosted by Lane and coordinated by art faculty member Craig Spilman with assistance from graphic design faculty Thomas Rubick who designed the poster, catalog and other marketing materials. Spilman also coordinated Lane's student art entries to the art competition for many years, facilitating the juried selection process and preparing slides for entry. Art faculty Sotoko Motouji is the current art competition coordinator at Lane.
Art Competition Process: Each college selects five best works of students in any medium. A recognized artist or art educator selects the top award winners and the League provides monetary awards. The first place winner receives $500, the second place winner receives $200, and the third place winners receive $100. A Jurors Purchase Award of $300 is given for an outstanding work to be purchased by the League for permanent collection at the campus of origin. At the discretion of the judge(s) honorable mentions may be given.
Competition winners may be viewed on the League for Innovation Student Art Competition website.
