Maurice Hamington I wish to write a book, sympathetic Knowledge: the Ethics and Politics of Jane Adams. For some time now, I have been conducting research of the philosophy of Jane Adams...I believe that my project has an excellent chance of getting published. The proposed sabbatical will contribute to my professional growth as both a philosopher, as a women's studies scholar, and as learning communities coordinator. Adams was an early feminist. She fought for women's suffrage, created support structures for women laborers, and helped launch the women's peace movement. W or Sp
Sarah Ulerick I want to revitalize my scholarly life by learning about cutting edge research in tectonics and synthesizing the history of theories of mountain building. I want to rekindle my connection to the Earth by experiencing geology in the field and seeing, firsthand, some of the most ancient and historically significant rocks in the world. Tectonics have changed our interpretations of many mountain ranges, including the Appalachians and their "companion" range in western Europe and East Greenland, the Caledonides. Sp
Jay Frasier Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) is a form of therapy developed by Dr. Albert Ellis. REBT principles are discussed in most textbooks used in the speech communication courses taught here at LCC. While I am familiar with the basics of REBT, I would like to study this therapeutic approach in more depth so I can use and teach the principles more effectively. Sp
Bill Burrows My goal is to become less isolated as an economics professional. Less isolated technologically, less isolated from the greater community outside of LCC, less isolated from fellow econ educators, and those that represent economics through the media. I will visit with other econ instructors who have developed inviting web sites. I will then construct my own economics web site. I will meet and interact with an experienced professional in the field of economics media. F or W
Susan Lowdermilk I will dedicate myself to studio art and graphics design research and production in and outside of the U.S. I aim to widen my knowledge of art and design, in order to enhance the content of my courses and provide myself new professional growth. I also aim to concentrate a block of time to create a cohesive body of work for two regional art exhibits scheduled for next year. I will be doing the bulk of my research in type and printing museums, design museums and contemporary art museums and libraries. Sp
Shelly Gaudia My goal is to improve my own understanding of the diverse ways in which knowledge of chemistry is used on the job by health care personnel. My plan is to interview health care professionals in a variety of employment settings throughout the Eugene-Springfield and Lane County area. I hope to gain insight into employees’ perceptions of the importance of chemical literacy in their workplace. F
Elaine Pray I will explore the training needed for students to become instructional assistants in the K-12 system. I will meet with LCC staff involved with a new education nprogram, lead by andrea Newton in cooperative Education, which is exploring a certificate degree program for instructional assistants. I will attend the National Association of Community College Teacher Education Conference. F
Jane Batterson My professional development leave involved three areas of study: exploration of new technologies in the field of dental hygiene, observation of specialists in the field of periodontics and a review of periodontal journals and research articles W
Deborah Bernhard Volunteer work as a docent( tour guide/information desk) for the University of Oregon Museum of Natural History. Taking middle and high schoolers on tours of the Museum's exhibit hall featuring Oregon archaeology, anthroplogy, and geology. Attending weekly meetings. Volunteering at the Science Factory (WISTEC/Planetarium) as a teacher's assistant with after school science enrichment classes for the BEST Program and with the Magic School Bus Science Project for elementary students. Sp
Bonnie Simoa In depth study of practical, philosophical, and experiential methods used in continuum Movement. Continuum is part of the growing field of Somatics (body-based learning).
