Business Program Prerequisites, Skill Competency Recommendations
Typing Test InformationWelcome! We are excited that you have chosen to focus your studies in business. The programs we offer have been developed and designed to provide program majors with essential skills and competencies needed to be successfully employed in the business community.
Keyboarding and 10-key competencies are two of the skills our Advisory Committee, consisting of local business professionals, and the State-Wide Administrative Office Professionals (AOP) Consortium have identified as essential. Beginning in the 2010-2011 academic year, we have added keyboarding and 10-key entry skill levels as recommended competencies in many of our course prerequisites, and the following program prerequisites:
Accounting Associate of Applied Science Degree
Administrative Office Professional (AOP) Associate of Applied Science Degree
Business Assistant One-Year Certificate
The new AOP program was intentionally structured to have classes with a progression of entry level skill recommendations, and classes that provide opportunities to develop keyboarding skills through weekly practice and timings.
The following is designed to provide information on our program prerequisites, to assist in your understanding of the Business Department’s skill competency recommendations and testing options, and to provide information about college placement testing.
Program Prerequisites
The entering student must have a basic knowledge of the Windows operating system, and place at least into WR 121 and MTH 065, or take classes to reach these levels before enrolling in program courses.
Before enrolling in BA 214 Business Communications, students must pass the SkillCheck Grammar & Proofreading test, or pass BT 108 Business Proofreading and Editing.
For Placement Testing information go to 2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/testing/placementtest.htm, or contact Testing at: TestingOffice@lanecc.edu or by calling (541) 463-5325.
Pre-Program Skill Competency Recommendations
Ability to accurately type 30 words per minute (based on average of the best three out of five 3-minute timings with 5 or fewer errors), or pass BT 010 Computer Keyboarding.
Ability to accurately key 130-132 strokes per minute on an electronic calculator (based on average of the best three out of five 3-minute timings with 8 or fewer errors), or pass BT 020 10-Key Calculator.
The Business Department offers free skill competency tests to assist students in determining their skill levels. The tests may be taken multiple times throughout your program studies. Once you meet the recommended competencies, no further testing is needed. For Business skill competency testing information and requirements contact the course instructor or the Dean of the Business Department.Note: For identification purposes, you must present a valid picture ID (i.e. student ID card or current driver’s license) to the proctor when taking the tests.
It is recommended that these tests be taken one term prior to enrolling in appropriate class. Since timings may be a graded component in some classes, students are encouraged to practice typing, on their own time to improve keyboarding speed and accuracy. Instructors may permit time in class for practice, but are not required to do so.
