Faculty-Student-Technology (F-S-T Structure)
Faculty-Student-Technology (F-S-T) project assumes that substantial increases in effectiveness and efficiencies could result from a reexamination of the role of the instructor, the student and technology in the learning environment.

  • Examines the learning environment in terms of the instructor-student, technology-student, and the student-student components, and builds a shared set of working assumptions to help guide systemic change at Lane
  • Explores how to change this structure and its supports to realize more effective and efficient student learning
  • Implements pilot projects and/or collaborates with existing projects (such as Distance Learning online courses) to utilize efficiencies to provide a better learning environment for students and a more professionally satisfying environment for faculty
  • Creates a team that provides a conduit for feedback from learners, instructors, and administration

Assessment
The aim of this project is to foster widespread faculty expertise and use of effective learning assessment tools. In addition, this project provides assessment support for all SLI projects.

  • Involves making our expectations explicit and public
  • Setting appropriate criteria and high standards for learning quality
  • Systematically gathering, analyzing, and interpreting evidence to determine how well performance matches those expectations and standards
  • Using the resulting information to document, explain, and improve performance

Discipline Contact
This project aims to define, establish and maintain contact between faculty in Lane’s many disciplines with the current thinking about teaching in that discipline. Funding available to each discipline, which was a part of this SLI project, has been mainstreamed into faculty professional development.

  • Provides access to resources for creating excellent learning environments created withindisciplines by individuals, grant funded projects, industry, professional associations, etc.
  • Provides a stronger basis for interdisciplinary work and cooperation
  • Provides resources for assessment

Alternative Scheduling and Formats Project
This project supports the creation, implementation, and infrastructure support for new ways of scheduling and connecting elements of the students' learning environment.

Alternative Scheduling and Formats project offers the opportunity to change many aspects of the time scheduling of our courses and the way they fit together.  The kinds of innovations being explored are:

  • developing courses, where appropriate, in a concentrated 5-week evening format
  • developing a time schedule which allows more freedom to break out of 50 minute units of class time
  • developing means for offering standard classes, where appropriate, over new time periods
  • developing large enrollment, many section courses into modules which can be offered concurrently
  • developing mini-modules for current courses to increase the capacity of the course
