Steps for Chartering New Projects

Project Development/ Pre-Chartering period:
This is the period of time when the project is “incubating” and taking shape. We recognize that “innovative ideas” often begin with only a few individuals and that developing clear ideas of implementation take time. Before projects are supported by SLI they need to be open to interested staff from the campus-wide community.

  1. Group of interested staff come together and begin discussion of innovation
    1. May communicate or initiate call for membership at this point or wait until step 3

  2. Present idea to SLI leadership team for consideration as a Project Team
    1. Team addresses how the project fits the goals of SLI
    2. Discusses issues such as overlap between projects, systemic nature of project, feasibility of project
    3. Makes recommendation to either become part of an existing project team or to form a new project team
      1. If decision is to become incorporated into an existing team, the SLI leadership team will act as the liason
      2. If decision is to form a new project team proceed to #3
  3. Staff presenting idea to leadership team commit to the process of charter development and SLI leadership commits to supporting the new team in this process
    1. Support for an interim coordinator or coordinators (reassignment time or curriculum development) may be granted to a member or members of the proposing team during the chartering period if the group bringing the request:
      1. brings a proposal specifying what work will be done
      2. submits name(s) for who will be responsible for the work in accordance with the faculty contract (see Article 3 in the SLI MOA 1999-2005 “Strategic Learning Initiative Assignments and Compensation”)
      3. agrees to open up the project team to the campus wide community
      4. commits to working with the SLI leadership team
      5. and there is sufficient time to reassign a faculty member’s teaching responsibilities if reassignment is requested

Chartering:
After the project has been accepted as an SLI project a charter needs to be developed and then submitted to the leadership team for review and approval. The terms (years) of the charter are set by the leadership team. A charter must include the following:

  1. Membership:
    1. List current members
    2. Indicate the process of selection from campus wide community (ie.. Daily announcements, inservice sessions)
    3. Term of service of individual team members

  2. Coordinator Selection
    1. Needs to be congruent with procedure outlined in the MOA 1999-2005 (see Article 3 in the SLI MOA 1999-2005)
    2. Term of service

  3. Purpose of the project team

  4. Goals and success measures

  5. Scope and implications for other groups

Post-Chartering Period:
After the project has been chartered it is the project team’s responsibility to carry out the terms of the charter, develop and manage its own budget and to report back to the SLI leadership team about progress as requested.

  1. Coordinator Selection conducted by process outlined in charter

  2. Project team develops a budget and submits to the SLI leadership team and manage the approved budget

  3. Project team work towards goals

  4. Communicates progress to the leadership team via attending leadership meeting as requested and completing an annual report

  5. Project team communicates to the campus wide community

  6. Submit updated /revised chartered at end of charter term
