Information for Employers
Employers who offer training sites for students are an important partner in Professional Skills Training (PST). Through employer participation, students will gain the necessary skills to succeed in their new careers.
PST is an excellent way for employers to evaluate potential employees. Over the years employers have retained about 75% of the students as regular employees after the successful completion of a training plan. Workers Compensation is provided by the college for students in non-paid placements. Students earn college credit for the learning that takes place on the job and the credit may be applied to a certificate or degree.
Employers need to be able to offer the following:
- Provide instruction, supervision and feedback to the student
- Sign off and comment on weekly student learning forms
- Establish and maintain good communication with the student
- Notify PST and counselor of any difficulties or concerns as they arise
- Be available to meet with the PST coordinator and counselor to evaluate student progress and review the job-site curriculum
A few employers have this to say about PST:
“I really like the opportunity to provide extended and intensive training. It gives me a chance to evaluate how well someone might fit within the company and I get to watch them grow as they acquire the necessary skills to become employable.”
-Wendy Grogan, Binyons Eye World, 2007
“Professional Skills Training at Lane Community College is a great way to foster growth and allow a student to continue to learn. We are very pleased with our working relationship with LCC and we feel we are contributing to the student’s career growth.”
-Jennifer Tran, Professional Service Industries, 2007
