IT Department Changes – 2006

FY06 brought significant budget challenges to the college. Facing a projected FY07 budget deficit of about $5.9 million dollars, the college was forced to eliminate many contracted positions and most part-time work.

The IT department lost 8.23 positions reflecting a $528,752 recurring budget reduction. This was the largest recurring reduction of any department. It accounts for over 14% of the college-wide recurring budget reduction. For the IT department, it means a loss of nearly 19% of the classified FTE. Several service areas were impacted by these reductions:

The loss of 4 computer lab assistant positions (totaling 2.73 FTE) forces us to cut back on services to students and open hours in the labs.
Elimination of the 1.0 FTE Micrographics Specialist position means that we will no longer be able to microfiche college records.
Reduction of the Archives and Records Management position from 1.0 FTE to 0.5 FTE means that we will focus on legally required document storage and retention. The archives function will be transferred from IT to the Library.
Elimination of two 1.0 FTE Network Administration Specialist positions requires us to reorganize work and redistribute job duties to other network specialists and Help Desk technicians.
Elimination of the 1.0 FTE printer repair position will shift some work to the Help Desk technicians while the more complex repair work will require support from local vendors.
Elimination of the 0.5 FTE position of ITC Coordinator will shift work to the Technical Trainer and other Technology Support Services staff.
Elimination of the 0.5 FTE Administrative Specialist position on Distance Learning means reduced services for students and increased work for remaining staff.

In July of 2006, the two staff in Telecom relocated from their long-time offices in Building 7 (Campus Services). The switchboard operator moved to Building 1 where she can provide both telephone support and walk-up information for students. The Telecom Technician moved to Building 2 in the main IT Department area. Loss of staff due to budget reductions will lead to more staff relocations in the near future.
