Affiliated Faculty of Ethnic Studies

Here at Lane Community College, a strong tradition of critical race scholarship has been part of the fabric of this school for many years. An Afro-American Studies Department was established during the 1969-1970 academic year. From there, the department evolved into Interdisciplinary Studies, and finally expanding into an Ethnic Studies Department – thought to be the first of its kind in Northwest institutions of higher education.

We honor all of the original staff and community members who had the courage and foresight to make Ethnic Studies a reality. We especially hold a place of honor for the first faculty member, William Powell, Ph.D., whose dedicated efforts helped to create a space for all of us.
