Timely Tips: Summer Session Success (Survival) Tips - return to Timely Tips index
Summer session at Lane is unique. There are four-week, six-week, eight-week and even some twelve-week classes. A student could enroll full-time, be done in eight short weeks, and then relax the rest of the summer. Sounds good, huh? Be careful! Summer session is fast-paced, with longer classes each day, often more frequent classes each week, and more course content packed into a shorter amount of time. It adds up to intense work. Please consider these recommendations.
- See an Advisor/Counselor to help you plan and balance your summer schedule.
- For a 4-week class, you will spend 3-4 hours a day, 4 days a week in class, and will have to spend twice that amount of time outside of class to complete course work effectively.
- Consider taking less than a full-time load.
- If you are going to take a full-time load, spread it out over the twelve weeks.
- Know the Satisfactory Academic Progress standards and how they apply to part-time and full-time course loads.
- The Math Resource Center (MRC) and Science Resource Center (SRC) will be open—use them if you are in Math and/or Science. The Writing Center is tentatively scheduled to be open, Tutor Central will be closed. TRiO will be open very limited hours the first eight weeks only.
- Be mindful of the refund deadlines for the courses you choose. The dates change with length of course and session offered.
- Find a study buddy and/or start a study group with students who are serious about success.
- If you struggled in previous terms, it may be in your best interest to take the summer off.
The TRiO Learning Center is a Student Support Services program funding by the US Department of Education, Division of Special Services, Title IV, Higher Education Act of 1965, ($244,735 in 2008-09). |
