March 1, 2011

It's the ninth week of the term, finals are around the corner, and then a week of Spring Break--YAY! Keep up your energy until finals are over.

1. TRiO Student Leadership Conference - Spring term. Friday, April 8th, 2011, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon. This conference, scheduled for the second Friday of the term, will bring TRiO students from all over the state of Oregon together for a day of workshops about leadership and higher education. This is a fantastic and fun way to get involved (also, this event is a great resume builder). If you inform your instructors beforehand, we think that they will be very supportive about you attending this event. TRiO will provide the transportation and all conference fees. Please sign up in TLC if interested.

2. Your winter term account balance must be paid in full by 11:59 p.m. March 2nd to keep your advance registered Spring term classes.

3. Scholarship Deadlines are Fast Approaching. OSAC-March 1st (today!); Lane Foundation-March 12th! Don't put off what you know you want to do! Scholarship Essays are time-consuming, as they require rewriting . . . more than once. TRiO's writing tutors are skilled in this process and can help you write what the scholarship folks are looking for in these short essays. It is highly recommended to make appointments with our writing tutors from the very beginning of your essay efforts and throughout the process. Appointments give you one-on-one time to examine your essays and assure you are meeting the essay requirements. As the deadline draws near, you want to be in at least your third rewrite, fine tuning what you have written. Make appointments today!

4. Don't miss the March 15th early deadline to apply at the University of Oregon (and be sure to check out deadlines for other schools you might be attending next year). Check out the transfer website for all sorts of great information http://admissions.uoregon.edu/transfer/transfer). Get your Application Fee Deferral Form from the TRiO office.

5. Seeking to interview women community college students who are participating in Parents As Scholars - Kate Barry is looking for fifteen women who are part of Oregon's Parents As Scholars program who would be willing to share their educational journey through individual in depth interviews. Participation in this study would involve a maximum time of 3-5 hours. If you are interested in participating in this research study, or want more information about it you can contact Kate either by email at barrykater@comcast.net or by calling her at 541 484 4367.

6. Counseling Closed Friday, March 4th. Counseling, Testing, and Career and Employment Services will be closed Friday, March 4 for SOAR (Student Orientation, Advising & Registration).

7. AARP Tax Help. Center Building cafeteria, south end, through April 15 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. First come, first served. Free. Bring all tax documents.

9. Study Groups: Weeks 9 and 10 are the last two weeks study groups will meet. Be sure to attend and be ready for exams.

10. Drop-in Tutoring continues throughout each day. Sign up on the board as often as you need help. Tutors will try to get to you within 10 minutes. Check the schedule of tutor shifts in the TLC to be sure a tutor with the skills you need is available. Often tutors can help you with other subjects than those listed, so don't be afraid to ask. Social science and criminal justice courses usually involve writing help or study skills. Liz and Nancy focus on these areas and the subject makes no difference.

11. Finals week (week 11) schedule is different--less hours, less tutors, different tutor shifts. It will be attached to next week's e-news. Be sure to look at it and plan your time. It will also be posted in the TLC next week.

February 22, 2011

Week 8! Isn't it amazing how quickly the term flies by? Take good care of yourselves. Get enough sleep, eat well, take your vitamins. If there are snow days this week, be sure to check Moodle to see what your instructor are planning to do.   News for the week:

2.  Making Wise Choices Workshop.  This workshop will provide you with sound advice to make the best decisions regarding your grading options.  Last chance to attend this workshop:  Thursday, February 24th, 3:00-4:00 p.m. in Building 19, Room 250.  Sign up in TLC.

3. Friday, February 25th is the last day to make schedule changes, which includes dropping or adding a class, or changing grade options. If you are considering this, or are struggling in a class, attend the Making Wise Choices Workshop, then come in and talk to us about whether it makes sense for you. Changing grade options or dropping a class may affect your financial aid. Talk to your counselor or advisor first!

4. Your winter term account balance must be paid in full by 11:59 p.m. March 2nd to keep your Spring classes.

5. Scholarship Deadlines are Approaching. OSAC-March 1st; Lane Foundation-March 12th!

6.  Scholarship Winter Workshops 2011.  Application Tips for the Oregon Student Assistance Commission and Lane Foundation Scholarships.  Wednesday, February 23rd, 3:30-5:00 p.m., Building 19, Room 232.  To register call Jackie Bryson at 541-463-5164 or email brysonj@lanecc.edu or come by Career and Employment Services, Building 1, Room 102.

7. GRADUATION INFORMATION: Deadline for students to apply for inclusion in the Lane 2010 Graduation Booklet is April 30, 2010. It is strongly advised to apply before this deadline. For more information go to http://2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/stuact/gradinfo.htm. Applications may be submitted after this date, and students may participate in the commencement ceremony, however the student's name will not be published.  Students who apply by April 30 will receive an official degree evaluation close to the end of spring term. Applications are processed in date order and students who apply early will receive their information earliest. Students who meet the deadline will be part of the priority review group for degree/certificate completion when spring grades are final.

8. Study groups are down to their last three sessions during weeks 8, 9, and 10.  Study groups and tutoring in general help to assure you have the foundation for meeting new material. Be sure to attend as new material often is delivered all too fast in the last weeks of the term.

9. Missed Appointments!  A few students have missed two appointment already this term and not canceled in advance. Canceling is easy; just call the office at 541-463-3131 and leave a message or erase your name from the sheet if you are in the TLC. Missing three appointments without canceling causes you to forfeit the option of making appointments through the end of that term. You will be limited to drop-in tutoring only. Don't jeopardize this proven success strategy in these last few weeks.

10. LANE PEACE CENTER HOSTS ACTIVIST AUTHOR RANDY SHAW
Shaw will speak on "Winning Social Change in Tough Times" Thursday, Feb. 24 from 1-2:30 p.m. in Building 17, Room 309. All Lane staff and students are invited to attend.

11. TLC cards are not for office appointments. Always sign in and out, even if you are here for lunch or to quickly print an assignment. All TLC use counts for our funding. However, you must sign out of the TLC when you meet with Bree or Kate or Mary. Time spent in office appointments is kept separately from the learning center (TLC) time. Study group attendance is kept by the tutor; do not put study group time on your TLC card. Keep TLC cards out so tutors can read them and log any time spent helping you. Never take your cards from the TLC. Sign out and leave them in the "return card" stand.

12. Forgotten items in the TLC: Lately a few folks have left coffee travel mugs, water bottles, but also the occasional empty food dish. Please remember to take your things with you when you leave. Please come claim your items and take them away. If you leave a flash drive, it will be labeled and kept in Nancy's desk until you claim it. We will also send an email to let you know we found it. Other items will be discarded at the end of the term.

13. COUNSELING CLOSED MARCH 4  Counseling, Testing, and Career and Employment Services will be closed Friday, March 4 for SOAR (Student Orientation, Advising & Registration).

February 15, 2011

Happy Valentines Day!  It's the seventh week of the term, so things will be hectic now until finals week is over.  It's a particularly important time to take care. Pace yourselves. Study hard, but take breaks as well.

1.  Be sure your Account Balance is $0 on March 2nd, or you will lose your spring schedule on March 3rd.

2.  U of O Tour.  This is much more than a tour.  You will meet with Admissions, Financial Aid, Academic Learning Services (SSS),TLC (their TRiO program) as well as have a tour of the campus. Lunch is provided. This is scheduled for President's Day (so you won't miss any classes).  The tour begins at 11:00 AM at Oregon Hall.   If you are interested in taking the bus with us, Kate Parrish will meet everyone at the LCC bus station and will take LTD Bus 81 at 10:28.   If you would like to meet us at UO, plan to meet us at the main entrance to Oregon Hall by 10:55 AM.  Wear comfortable walking shoes and be prepared to walk briskly.  To return to LCC via Bus 81, our options are 3:00 or 3:30.   Most likely we will take the 3:30 bus.  Sign up in TLC.  If you have already signed up, please confirm by Wednesday, February 16th, with Marla or ShyAnne that you are still planning on going.  We must have confirmation since we are ordering pizza for lunch.  Thanks!

3.  Friday, February 25th is the deadline to change grade options or drop a class.  Be sure to attend a Making Wise Choices workshop if you are thinking about changing your grade options or dropping a class.  There are financial aid implications that we can help you think about.  Making Wise Choices Workshops  Tuesday, February 15th, 1:00-2:00 in Building 19, Room 232 or Tuesday, February 22nd, 11:30-12:30 p.m. in Building 19, Room 234 or Thursday, February 24th, 3:00-4:00 p.m. in Building 19, Room 250*
*Mary Parthemer is the instructor for this workshop.

4.  Scholarship Application Deadlines are fast approaching! OSAC application is due March 1, Lane Foundation application is due March 12. These are great opportunities to apply for multiple scholarships with one application process. And even better, the Lane application uses the same essays and Activities Chart as the OSAC application uses. Did you know there is a scholarship specifically for TRiO students in the Lane Foundation Book? That means you are only competing with about 100 other students because 80 of our students won't be back next year due to graduation and transfer. There is also a scholarship offered through Disability Resources. Be sure to apply!

5.  Don't miss mid-February and mid-March deadlines at the University of Oregon (and be sure to check out deadlines for other schools you might be attending next year). Check out the transfer website for all sorts of great information http://admissions.uoregon.edu/transfer/transfer).  Get your Application Fee Deferral Form from Marla.

6.  Are you planning on graduating this Spring or Summer? It's time to think about applying for graduation! Participation in the spring graduation commencement requires completing all degree or certificate requirements by the end of spring term, or having nine or fewer credits remaining after the completion of spring term. The graduation application deadline is April 30th, but your application date puts you in line for getting your transcripts officially evaluated which must happen before your degree is conferred. That will inform you if there is anything missing.   Once a student applies for graduation they have two terms, including the term of application, to complete their degree or certificate.  So if you won't be finishing your credits until summer, please wait until the beginning of Spring term to apply. But, if you know you will be done by the end of spring, you can apply now. See graduation information at http://2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/stuact/gradinfo.htm

7. TRiO Writing Tutors fine tune scholarship essays.  Scholarship essays need a lot of reworking.  Be sure to check your essays with a writing tutor.  Appointments are a good idea, as you get 30 minutes of uninterrupted time with a tutor.  All tutors can help you navigate through FAFSA and OSAC.

8.  Student Technology Workshops available.  The student technology workshop will continue to be open lab/open topic for week 7.  Coming for week 8 and 9 will be workshops on Word.  They are hoping to assist students who need technology help with their final papers.  All   sessions are in building 1 room 121.

Monday, 2/14        1:30-3:30
Tuesday, 2/15       12-1 / 4-5
Wednesday, 2/16  12-1
Thursday, 2/17      12-1 / 4-5
Friday, 2/18          12-2

  9.  Computer caution: Please put your bags under the desk and not in front of the computer. The bags block the airflow into the air vents on the front of the computers. Lately a couple of them overheated from this and shut down in the middle of the students' efforts and they were not able to save their work. Remember, in general, to keep your bags out of the way, under tables or computer station desks, and not in the aisles where they can trip people. Also, please keep your gear with you wherever you sit and not take up two spaces in the TLC: not a chair for you and a chair for your pack or a seat at the computer and a seat at a table. To those entering the TLC, it looks  like there are no seats for incoming students.

10.  Complete Tutor Evaluations this week using the yellow forms on the information table. Please use the 10-point scale for the items listed in the box at the top. Checkmarks cannot be counted. Return the completed forms to the inbox on the side of Nancy's desk.

11.  Leave the eating table clean when you get up. Check to make sure you are not leaving sticky surfaces or crumbs. It isn't fun for others to come in and have to clean off the table to sit down. Remember also, no backbacks or purses go on the table; it is an eating surface and should be kept clean at all times.

February 8, 2011

We will review Financial Aid expectations for satisfactory academic progress (SAP); provide information on campus support services; and step students through a decision making process designed to help them make wise choices.  All before February 25, the final day to make schedule changes for winter term!

Students will attend weekly seminars and meetings with fellow students and faculty to discuss their ongoing projects. During the summer there will be ongoing, personal mentoring about individual career pathways from OHSU faculty. A paid stipend is included for students during the program and housing is available for students who qualify. Students will present a scientific poster presentation of their summer research project at the end of the program.  Applications and more information are now available at ww w.ohsu.edu/academic/diversity.  For more information that is not available on our website, please contact Ebony Lawrence at lawreneb@ohsu.edu.

10. Tutor evaluation time is here. Please evaluate tutors with whom you have worked this term in the TLC (in appointments, in study groups, and extended drop-in tutoring). Yellow evaluation forms are on the information table in the center of the room. Be sure to use the 10-point scale for the list of tutoring skills boxed at the top. No check marks. please. Put completed forms in the black holder attached to the side of Nancy's desk.

11. Study Groups: It is perfectly fine to join an ongoing study group. Just show up. Current study groups are posted below and on the board behind Nancy's desk.   Math 95 meets Tuesdays from 10:00 to 10:50 in Bldg 1, room 212. 13. Recycle, please, please, please. Cans and bottles of plastic and glass need to be taken down to the recycle bins by the snack stand. Please, never leave them in the TLC. Don't set empties on the microwave or table or toss in the trash cans. Help Lane be sustainable and keep the TLC cleaner.

14. 1.  Are you registered for Spring Classes? Advance registration is happening NOW.

2.  Mid-Term Progress Reports--It is important to know how you are doing in your classes.  Pick up your mid-term progress reports in the office or TLC, and be sure to talk with Kate if you have any concerns about how you are doing in a class.

4.  Don't miss mid-February and mid-March deadlines at the University of Oregon (and be sure to check out deadlines for other schools you might be attending next year). Thursdays have become pretty slow, yet math tutors James, Jake, and Aletheia cover shifts for an entire day of math help. Mid to late Thursday afternoon is particularly quiet, so come in and make progress on your work.

10.  New MAC  OS X 10.5.8 is a gem. Some of you have been waiting for a MAC upgrade a long time. Come in and try it out.

11. No study group?  Sign up on the board for drop-in tutoring and three 30-minute appointment sessions in the TLC.  Follow the instructions attached to the top of the appointment book and don't forget, three missed appointments without canceling will cause you to use lose that privilege for the rest of the term. You will be reminded about canceling after the first missed appointment.  So far, no one has lost that privilege in ten years.

TRiO E-News 1-24-11

Here we are at the beginning of Week Four--Winter Term is flying!

1. ADVANCE REGISTRATION for Spring Term begins TOMORROW, Tuesday, 1/25/2011 at 7:00 a.m.  If you need some advising for course planning for Spring, get in to see Kate, Bree or your Program Advisor or Counselor. You can look up to see if you are released for Advance Registration in Spring Term on myLane. After logging in to myLane, go to myEnrollment tab, then to Student Status channel, and then "check my advance registration".

2.  TRiO Transfer Workshop.  This Tuesday, January 25th, 2:00-4:00, Bldg. 2/216.  If you are considering transferring to the UO or any other four-year college here is your chance to ask questions, and hear a panel of students talk about their experiences and college personnel tell you what's important to know.  Sign up in TLC if interested. Don't miss it!

3. OREGON TRANSFER DAYS

Oregon Transfer Days, a series of statewide events to assist Oregon community college students to successfully transition to a four-year college or university, will include Lane on Tuesday, January 25, from 10 a.m.- 1 p.m. in the Cafeteria, Center Building. The event gives students the opportunity to meet with college and university representatives from around Oregon. For statewide information go online at http://www.oracrao.org/OTD

4. TRiO Time Management Workshop - Friday, January 28th, 2:00 - 3:00, 1/223

5.  It's time to think about Mid-Term Progress Reports. Stop by the TRiO front desk or at the check-in table  in the TLC and take enough M-T Progress Report forms for all your classes. Complete the top part, turn them in to your instructors, and ask to get them back before the end of Week 5. Come talk to us if you are struggling in any of your classes.

6.  SCHOLARSHIP TIME!! ESSAYS! Essay tutors Nancy, Lynn, and Liz focus on helping you write what the scholarship review committees want to read. In the 1000-character essays, it is important to focus on answering both parts of each question, and apying specific attention to the second parts. Ask a tutor for the handout for writing essay #1  and for distinguishing between essays #2 and #3. Essay One has a worksheet. Essays Two and Three can be tricky, especially the first time you apply for scholarships, so the handout helps you to recognize how to write to answer each essay question as specified.  This is critical to increasing your chances for success. Lynn, Liz, and Nancy will work with you. Make appointments when you can and use drop-in time as well. Don't wait. March 1 is closer than you think. OSAC and Lane Foundation use the same essays and activities chart, so once you have applied for OSAC scholarships, it is very easy to apply for Lane Foundation scholarships.

Scholarship vocabulary: Essay help in the form of two word lists provides concise language, protecting your word count and clarifying what you write. Ask a tutor to get you the 'action verbs" list for describing what you did and for turning into adjectives to describe yourself and for the list of "qualities of successful people" to describe yourself as you write your essays.

7. OSU Scholarship opportunity for transfer students going into STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math). This is a great scholarship and there are 20 to be awarded. Need to apply to OSU Honors College by February 1. See information at  http://oregonstate.edu/admissions/blog/2010/12/10/stem-transfer-student-scholarships/.

8. Scholarship Workshops: "Application Tips for the Oregon Student Assistance Commission and Lane Foundation Scholarships."  Wednesday, February 2, or Wednesday, February 23, 3:30 - 5:00, 19/232. Register by e-mailing Jackie Bryson at brysonj@lanecc.edu

9. Please make room for others to study. The TLC is crowded this term. We need your help to keep unused seating available. When sitting at a table, please don't put your pack on another chair or on top of the table; tuck it underneath,  keeping the aisles clear.  When you move to a computer station, please take your books and pack with you and leave the table space available for students who need a place to sit.  Packs should be tucked under the desks. As this is a busy term with the TLC full at various times, you may want to come when it is slower (late afternoons or early mornings) if you are not requiring a particular tutor's help.

10. Free On-line Math Resources: Review, Examples, Reference Sheets: For good quick reference sheets, see the Math Review Sheets notebook in the TLC or try these websites. You may need to update your home Adobe Acrobat, but the TLC has the needed version of Acrobat.

11. Printing Slides takes a lot of paper and ink when done incorrectly. Here's how to print PowerPoint or other slides efficiently and sustainably. You can even select which slides you want to print. Remember, dark backgrounds just waste ink and are unreadable.  Follow these directions; the arrows (>) refer to the next step in the process.

1. Select "Print Preview" > the "Print What" drop-down list gives options to print up to nine slides per page; usually four or six is best. Choose how many slides per page you want >

2. Select "Orientation" > choose "portrait" or "landscape" according to your preference >

3. Select "Options" > "Color/grayscale" > choose "Grayscale" >

4. Select "Options" > make sure "Fit to paper" has a check in the box to maximize the size of the slides on your page >

5. Click on the printer icon. In the print dialogue box, choose those slides you want to print if you don't want to print all of them. Click "OK" when you are ready, and then close your print preview window.

12. STUDY IN COSTA RICA: SLIDE PRESENTATION JANUARY 27

Learn about Lane's BI103 "Field Biology in Costa Rica" class. Attend an informational slide/ video presentation with refreshments, Thursday, January 27, 5-6 p.m., Building 16, Room 111. RSVP to Joe Russin at 5452 or russinj@lanecc.edu

The women's team will kick things off at 4 p.m. and will be followed by the men's game at 6 p.m. Admission is free to everyone. In addition, we are encouraging all fans to bring non-perishable food item to help us support Food For Lane County.

January 18, 2011
Can you believe that it is already Week Three?  Wow, this term is going to go really fast! I know that many of you are using TRiO services because today there was no room to sit in there.  Don't be discouraged from coming in...there are lots of times during the day where it is fairly quiet in there.

News for the Week:

1. OSU Tour this Friday, January 21st from 9:00-2:00.  Please meet Kate in front of Building #1 around 8:45, as they will be leaving sharply at 9:00.  If you are signed up for the OSU Tour this Friday, please confirm ASAP with Marla if you will be attending.  If you say you are attending, we fully expect you to show up since we are paying for staff and vehicles to go.

2. TRiO Transfer Workshop on Tuesday, January 25th, 2:30 - 4:00, Building 2/216.  If you are thinking about transferring to a four-year school next year, it is critical that you attend this informative workshop.  Make an appointment with a U of O advisor, or admissions/financial counselor, in the LCC Counseling Office for the next scheduled date of January 27th between 8:30-4:00.

3. Spring Advance Registration begins January 25th at 7:00 a.m.  See your adviser as soon as possible, so you will be ready to get those classes that you want spring term.

4. Scholarship Time! Have you started your OSAC and Lane Foundation applications yet?  OSAC forms!  Essays!  Activity Charts!  Scholarship help is available in the TLC.  Please see a tutor for handouts of active verbs, vocabulary, and how to correctly write academic degrees when writing your essays.  Writing tutors familiar with OSAC are Lynn, Liz, and Nancy.  They've been helping for years.  So, be sure to get your essays checked, use the handout vocabulary, and remember rewriting each essay is an expectation, not an option.  Scholarship workshops available through Career & Employment Services on Wednesday, January 19th, 3:30-5:00, Wednesday, February 2nd, 3:30-5:00, and Wednesday, February 23rd from 3:30-5:00, all in 19/232.

5. How to Pay for College in One Day!  Attend this free event to to learn about scholarship opportunities, Saturday, January 22nd, Center for Meeting and Learning, Room 100/Lobby, Center for Meeting and Learning.  Register on-line with CRN 32713. For more information visit http://2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/ces/events.htm

6. Get help with your FAFSA!  Friday, January 21st, Building 2, Room 215, 2:30-3:30, 3:45-4:45, or 5:00-6:00. Important to submit FAFSA this week. Remember, you can update information later, but get it in NOW!

7. TLC Cards: Please be careful to put the correct time in and time out on your cards. There seems to be an epidemic of folks signing out with a time that precedes their signing in time. We can't tally that, so please make sure your time out is after the time you arrive.

8. Consideration for closing shift tutors, please.  Closing times in the TLC vary, though we open every weekday at 8:30 a.m. So, Mondays and Thursdays the TLC closes at 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays the TLC closes at 5:30 p.m., and Fridays the TLC closes at 4 p.m. Please be considerate of your tutors, who still have to tasks to do at closing. Start to save and log off computers at least 5 minutes before closing, and pick up all belongings so you can leave by the closing time. Please, please, please do not wait until closing time to start a process that can take up to ten minutes. Most of our tutors have to catch a bus or be in a class afterward. They, like you, need to be out the door at the closing time. If you know you will need extra help, ask at least 15 minutes before closing, so the tutor has time to help you, and maybe others, and can still close on time.

9. Study Groups are still forming.  Sign up on the blue clipboard with all your available times or join a current study group (see the board behind Nancy's desk for groups that have already formed).

10. Math 60 meets Tuesdays with Jake from 12:00 to 12:30, starts 2/25, room TBA.
Math 95 meets Tuesdays with Lynn from 10:00 to 10:50 in room 212 down by the restrooms.

The room will always be locked until Liz opens it for you.

11. Community Forum:  Wednesday, January 19th, 12:00-1:00, Bldg. #11, Room 240.  Immigrant Rights Advocacy Program Coordinator Guadalupe Quinn will share information about the services that Amigos provides for the Latino and International immigrant community here in Lane/Springfield area. Come and learn about the various advocacy events focused on human rights and immigration policies.

Take good care! Let us know how we can help you.

2. Oregon State University Tour - Friday, January 21st, 9:00-2:00. We really need to know if you are absolutely committed to this because of transportation and the tour arrangements at OSU. Also, you will need to make arrangements with your instructors if you have classes during that time. Please let us know by Tuesday, January 17th if you plan on going. This is a great opportunity if you are truly interested in transferring to OSU. Sign up in TLC.

3. University of Oregon Tour - Monday, February 21st, 11:00-4:00. It's a holiday at Lane, so this is a perfect time to take advantage of the tour. Lunch is included, along with visits from Financial Aid, Admissions, and TRiO (TLC). We will be taking the bus from LCC, or you can meet us there, more details to follow. Please sign up in TLC.

4. University Advising available this term! If you are planning to transfer to the UO, advising will be available at Lane. UO advising dates include January 27th, February 3rd, April 21st April 28th. Sign up at the Counseling Department's front desk for an appointment time.

5. It's scholarship season - Check out the scholarship workshops that are offered through Career and Employment Services at 2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/ces/classwrk.htm. The workshops offered this term are: Wednesday, January 19th, Wednesday, February 2nd, and Wednesday February 23rd from 3:30-5:00. Workshops are located in Building 19, Room 232. You must register by calling (541) 463-5164 or emailing brysonj@lanecc.edu or come in person to Counseling and Advising in Building 1.

6. Test Anxiety Workshop this Friday, January 14th, 2:00-3:00, in 1/224. Don't miss this exceptional workshop by John Steele from the Math Department. We are so lucky to have John be willing to do this workshop for us. John will teach you how to prepare for tests in a way that will reduce your anxiety, and allow you to think clearly and get to what you know. Check out the TRiO website for other Winter events and activities - http://2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/trio/activities.htm. Sign up in the TLC.

7. Need Supplies? The TLC has everything you need. Ask a tutor if you don't see what you need on the table with the sign "Information and Supplies." We have hole punches, staplers, erasers, white-out, scissors, colored pencils, etc. A Lane faculty and staff phone book and a local phone book are on the main book shelf in the TLC; math texts can be checked out for use in the TLC only (ask a tutor, writing guides and other information are all in here too. Please don't ask office staff, ask tutors first.

8. Be sure you log off completely. Logging off the computers is a two-step process. You are logged off when the picture disappears and the same screen you used to log in reappears on the desktop.

9. Cell phones: Please remember to turn them off or on vibrate before you come in the TLC. Hold any conversations until you are completely out the door to keep from disturbing other students.

10. TLC Food Etiquette: Eating is at the white table only. Please clean up your spot. Drinks with lids can be on any table but nothing of any kind or even empty containers can be on or at the computer stations. Remember to label all food and drinks you put in the fridge. We toss out food that is left for more than two days, so check to make sure you didn't forget containers.

11. Recycle paper waste in the blue recycle bin in the TLC but take all cans and bottles down the hall to the recycle bins.

12. Tutoring appointments begin this week. The appointment book is ready for students to sign up in the yellow areas on the tutors' pages. Please read the instructions and follow them when signing up. Try not to cancel last minute, but don't be a "no show." Appointments are valuable time for students to work one-on-one with a tutor without interruption for a full 30 minutes. Continue to sign up on the drop in board for tutoring help all day long.

13. TLC open until 5:30 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. It's a quiet time to get some extra help from Liz and James on Tuesday and Liz and Mike on Wednesday. Work on your essays or get some math and chem down. No appointments 4:30 to 5:30.

14. Study groups have proven a great success strategy for science and math courses. Lots of interest in math at all levels this term--see the blue sign up sheets on the clipboard. Study groups are student generated, and each student must sign up with all his or her available times on each weekday. When we find three students who have the same hour available on any day, we will notify those students to confirm their interest. If all parties commit to attend on a weekly basis, a group is formed, and we get a room and a tutor. Study groups require a weekly attendance of three or they will be canceled, but most students stay committed to the end of the term as the courses get harder with each passing week. Don't wait for a group to form; use tutors from the beginning.

15. Math 95 study group can meet with Lynn from 10:00 to 10:50 on Tuesdays. Room to be announced. If you signed up for this study group, please reply to the email from Nancy, confirming whether you can commit to attend on a weekly basis. If so, we will book a room for you.

16. Phones with various rings and dings going off in the TLC are most distracting to concentrating students. Please remember to turn your phone off before entering the TLC. If you have it on vibrate and have to take that call, put the person on hold and don't start to converse until you are out in the hallway.

17. Tax help: AARP will be on campus (in the cafeteria) starting Feb 1 through April 15, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:00 a.m -3:00 p.m. First come, first serve. This information will also be posted to MyLane portal soon. Please see the schedule below for other places available in the community.
