Weekly E-News Archive - Winter 2009 | E-News index DATE: March 23, 2009 Dear TRiO Students: All of us here at TRiO want to wish you all good luck finals week!!! Have a wonderful, relaxing spring break, you deserve it! TLC will be closed for spring break. The TRiO office will be open Tuesday-Friday with limited coverage. Here's just a few items: 1. Finals Week TLC Schedule changes. Hopefully most of you were in last week and noticed the schedule posted in the TLC. However, it is also attached for your convenience. The hours are shorter with major changes in the scheduling. Math will be covered through Wednesday. Thursday morning we are only open until noon and Friday we are closed. Please refer to the finals week schedule when making plans for tutor help in the TLC. 2. The "Winter 2009 Directory," a little greyish spiral-clad phone book for Lane departments, faculty, and staff, is missing from the TLC. It belongs with the other phone books on the shelves, but recently disappeared. We have looked everywhere, so figure someone was using it and accidentally took it when they left. We just purchased it, and many students in TRiO rely on having the TLC copy available. Please take a look in your stuff to see if you have it and return it promptly. Thank you. 3. New scholarship possibility: Incight Scholarship. Criteria is that student have a documented disability and be enrolled full-time. Go to the website for more information: www.incight.org. Deadline April 1, 2009. Warm Regards, DATE: March 2, 2009 Dear TRiO Students: It's the ninth week of the term, finals are around the corner, and then a week of Spring Break--YAY! Keep up your energy until finals are over. DATE: February 24, 2009 Dear TRiO Students: Week 8! Isn't it amazing how quickly the term flies by? I hope you are all taking good care of yourselves. There are some pretty bad bugs going around. Get enough sleep, eat well, take your vitamins. DATE: February 17, 2009 Dear TRiO Students: Here we are on the downhill side of the term. Can you believe it? Hopefully you are staying current with your classes and using the tutors here in the TLC and other Tutor Centers to support you in achieving excellence! News for the week: 1. Are you feeling a bit stressed out in the sixth week of the term? Come to the STRESS MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP with Bree this Friday, February 13th, 2:30 - 4:00 in 1/222 to discover some great stress management strategies. Don't tell us you are too busy. This is time wisely invested. Do something good for yourself! 2. Are you registered for Spring Classes? Advance registration is happening NOW. 3. UNIVERSITY OF OREGON TOUR--NEXT WEEK ON PRESIDENT'S DAY! This is much more than a tour. You will meet with Admissions, Financial Aid, Academic Learning Services, Student Support Services (their TRiO program) as well as have a tour of the campus. Lunch is provided. This is scheduled for President's Day (February 16th) so you won't miss any classes. If you aren't signed up, SIGN UP NOW! 4. Don't miss mid-February and mid-March deadlines at the University of Oregon (and be sure to check out deadlines for other schools you might be attending next year). Check out the transfer website for all sorts of great information (http://admissions.uoregon.edu/transfer/transfer). The Family and Human Services Program has a February 13th application deadline. Check the website (http://education.uoregon.edu/field.htm?id=54) to help answer questions. Get your Application Fee Deferral Form from Marla or Janelle. 5. U of O Academic Advising is available at Lane on some Tuesdays from 1:00-5:00 in the Counseling Department. February 10th, March 10th, April 14th, April 28th, May 12th, and May 26th. Sign up in the Counseling Office. 6. Are you planning on graduating this Spring or Summer? It's time to think about applying for graduation! Participation in the spring graduation commencement requires completing all degree or certificate requirements by the end of spring term, or having nine or fewer credits remaining after the completion of spring term. The graduation application deadline is April 30th, but your application date puts you in line for getting your transcripts officially evaluated which must happen before your degree is conferred. That will inform you if there is anything missing. Once a student applies for graduation they have two terms, including the term of application, to complete their degree or certificate. So if you won't be finishing your credits until summer, please wait until the beginning of Spring term to apply. But, if you know you will be done by the end of spring, you can apply now. See graduation information at http://2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/stuact/gradinfo.htm 7. Classes to consider for Spring term: Eliminating Self-Defeating Behavior - This class helps students change a significantly bothersome behavior. Former students have quit smoking, worked to diminish anger and procrastination, quit overspending and learned to follow a budget, as well as changed a host of other self-defeating behaviors. Several former students have said they made more progress in this seven-week class than they had previously in months or years of therapy! Sign up now: CRN 41364 T/Th 1:00 - 2:20 8. Printing in the TLC is limited. Large print jobs are not allowed. When checking, we find several jobs were held and piled up in the printer que as they exceeded the printing limit. Some had more than one attempt to print. Please don't keep trying to print. Ask a tutor for help when you can't print on the first try. Most of these jobs contained pictures and sidebar information not needed and very wasteful of ink and paper. Please coordinate your research work a tutor, who will show you how to save and print just what you need and not several pages to get one or two paragraphs or a page. This saves you a lot of aggravation and teaches you how to do useful research and save ink and paper in the process. 9. Evaluating tutors helps us know how we can improve our service in the TLC. Please fill out one of the blue forms on the tables in the TLC for each tutor with whom you have worked this term. Put the filled out evaluations in the black file holder on the side of Nancy's desk. 10. New tutor Maggie replaces Andreas and works 8:30 to 12:30 Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Maggie does Math 10 through 111, Physics, and Chemistry, and can help you learn to use your texts to find answers when tutors aren't available (2:00 a.m.). 11. Mid-term Progress Report forms available in the TRiO Office. Pick some up, give them to your instructors and learn how you are doing in your classes. If you are struggling in any way, please come in and talk to us to strategize about getting back on track. 12. TRiO Writing Tutors fine tune scholarship essays. Scholarship essays need a lot of reworking. Be sure to check your essays with a writing tutor. TRiO writing tutors, Lynn, Nancy, and Liz are all familiar with the specifications for scholarship essays. Appointments are a good idea, as you get 30 minutes of uninterrupted time with a tutor. All tutors can help you navigate through FAFSA and OSAC. Have a great week! Have a Happy Valentine's Day and enjoy the three-day weekend! Have some fun in between getting some work done. Warm regards, Mary DATE: February 2, 2009 Dear TRiO Students: Dear TRiO Students: What a gorgeous day! It's too early to get spring fever though. Stay focused. Know where your priorities are. News for the Week: 1. Only TRiO students have the opportunity to see the FREE preview show at LCC of Godspell. The show is this Thursday, February 5th at 8:00 p.m. in the Blue Door Theater in the Lane Performance Hall (Bldg. #6) on campus. Please arrive by 7:45 p.m. If you have signed up to attend, we expect you to show up or let us know now that you will not be attending. We have given our sign-up list to the Box Office, so when you arrive please tell them you are a TRiO student and they will mark you off the list. theatertheatertheatertheatertheatertheatertheatertheatertheatertheatertheaterThis is a wonderful opportunity to see a great show, support Lane's theatre department, and to take a little break from studying. Please tell us how you like it. Any questions call Marla at 463-3131 or stop in to the TRiO Office. 2. ADVANCE REGISTRATION for Spring Term began Tuesday, 1/27/2009 at 7:00 a.m. If you need some advising for course planning for Spring, get in to see Kate, Bree or your Program Advisor or Counselor. 3. Lane Preview Night, the college's annual open house, will be held in the gym and surrounding classrooms on Wednesday, March 4 from 6 to 8:30 pm. This event is an opportunity for prospective students and their families to visit campus, learn more about Lane's many academic programs and career opportunities, and get a better feel for what higher education is all about. We're looking for student volunteers to help with this important recruiting and outreach program. If interested, please contact David Van Der Haeghen, Student Recruitment and Outreach Coordinator in Enrollment and Student Financial Services, at 463-5688 or vanderhaeghend@lanecc.edu. A 20-minute volunteer training is mandatory! All who assist will receive a free t-shirt to wear during the event. 4. Scanning transcripts for OSAC: Transcripts and other documentation can be scanned at the number five computer in the TLC (See sign). The required adobe program will be installed on that computer for your use by Wednesday. Instructions will be printed and available for your use. Tutors can walk you through the process. 5. Tutor evaluation time. Please use the blue or white forms on each table to evaluate the tutors who have helped you this term. Each tutor needs ten evaluations. It is important that you use the 10-point scale as we have to tally the overall totals. We use the information to improve ourselves as tutors and serve you better. 6. Cell phone silence, please. Cell phones have been going off all too often in the TLC. This disturbs students and the library atmosphere we try to maintain. Please remember to turn your mobile off or set on vibrate before entering the TLC and if you do take a call, to ask them to hold until you have exited the TLC for your conversation. Thanks! 7. Fee Deferral Form--We can provide you with one if you are making application to one of Oregon four-year universities. See Marla. 8. APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS NOW. 9. Scholarship Essay writers! Work with Nancy, Liz, and Lynn on your essays. They are trained to help you write what the scholarship folks want to read. Remember, a good essay has at least three rewrites if not more. Make appointments for uninterrupted time. 10. References for scholarships. Be sure to approach your references now, and give them the deadline by which you need to have your reference. 11. DROP-IN TIMES WITH BREE and KATE - both have a lot of time available for seeing you for advising or counseling. Stop by the TRiO desk to find out when they are available. You can schedule an appointment if you'd prefer. 12. TLC is a fragrance-sensitive zone. Please refrain from wearing fragrances in the TLC. Both tutors and students who work in this room are highly sensitive to some of these odors and have been affected by them while in the TLC. The following products are known to cause health problems among many people: perfume, cologne, aftershave, hairspray and other hair products, fabric softeners, lotions, deodorants, laundry detergents. Support your fellow students and tutors by avoiding fragrant products. 13. Labeled food only. TRiO students and staff alike need to label their food items in the fridge. Please remember to do so. A dark blue marking pen and a pad of post-its make it easy. Remember, food must be consumed daily and no dishes or containers should be left on the microwave or tables. 14. Study Groups are starting to form. students must be in a structured course not a self-paced course. All interested students must list their available times for each day on the sign up clipboard next to the math or science course of interest. These times are used to find an hour in which at least three students can meet as a group once a week. So far: 15. Math 10 meets 12 to 1 on Fridays with Ian in Bldg 1/216 ~~Math 95 meets 11:30 to 12:20 on Tuesdays with Adam . Room to be announced. Meet in TLC 2/3 to start. ~~Math 20 needs one more student to form a group. If you can meet during any of the times listed, sign up with your availabilities. Take good care and have a good week! Remember to come to TRiO if you have any questions or needs. Warm Regards, Mary DATE: January 26, 2009 Dear TRiO Students: Here we are at the beginning of Week Four--Winter Term is flying! Regular Notification--May 15, 2009 - we recommend you submit your application by March 15 if at all possible. Be sure to see Marla for a Application Fee Deferral form so that you can submit your application without paying the fee up front. 7. Have you submitted your FAFSA for 2009-10? YES? Congratulations! You will be in-line for the biggest awards. NO? Get the FAFSA in this week and you too will still be in-line for the biggest awards! 8. TLC door seems to work. Please return to entering and exiting through the Room 220 (TLC) door. Thanks for your patience. 9. Eating in the TLC. Yes we can! But, only at the white table. Please help keep the white table clean for eating. Backpacks and purses should not be put on this table (by student request). You can work at this table while you are eating, but between 11:00 and 1:00, if you are not eating, please vacate it to make room for those who want to come in to eat. DATE: January 20, 2009 Dear TRiO Students: It is an exciting day and year! We have a new president and administration. There is energy and hope in the air! It feels like people all over the U.S. are standing ready to do their best to make our world better. Know that your education is so important in all of this. Do your best, go for your passions, make a difference! 1. The TLC Schedule is finally set for the term. It is posted in the TLC and attached to this E-news. Tutors occasionally will need to be absent and we will have substitutes in the same subject whenever possible. Check the schedule to see which tutors meet your subject needs and when they are available. 2. TRANSFER WORKSHOP, Friday, January 23, 2:30 - 4:00, Building 19, Room 232. There are staff and students coming from different schools, so if you have signed up, please show up! If you haven't yet signed up and are planning on transferring, sign up now and then show up. 3. ADVANCE ADVISING for Spring Term begins TODAY! If you have never advance registered, you will need to see your counselor or advisor to be released. You may need to see them for course planning. ADVANCE REGISTRATION begins 7:00 a.m next Tuesday, January 27. Are YOU ready to register for spring classes? 4. Fee Deferral Form--We can provide you with one if you are making application to one of Oregon four-year universities. See Marla. 5. OREGON TRANSFER DAYS 6. HOW TO PAY FOR COLLEGE IN ONE DAY 7. Lucky you! Math tutors are available in the TLC all day. You can make appointments and use drop-in tutoring to get all the help you need all day every day. Check the TLC schedule for tutors and courses. The TLC is offers our students more support than the MRC, but teachers tell their students to go to the MRC because it is the only option available for the several hundred other math students on campus. If your instructor offers extra credit for working in the MRC, you can substitute your time in the TLC. We'll even make out a verification slip for you. Just ask a tutor. 8. Study groups are student-generated and thus completely dependent on students putting down on the form all their available times for each day. From those options, we have a much better chance of finding an hour in which three students interested in the same subject can meet on a weekly basis. Some of you have signed up but have entered vague or incomplete times. Please put blocks of time you are available each day. There are at least three students enrolled in structured Math 10, 20, 60, 65, and 70 courses. If you sign up, we can likely form a group for any one of these math courses. 9. DROP-IN TIMES WITH BREE and KATE - both have a lot of time available for seeing you for advising or counseling. Stop by the TRiO desk to find out when they are available. You can schedule an appointment if you'd prefer. 10. APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS NOW 11. Essays writers! Work with Nancy, Liz, and Lynn on your essays. They are trained to help you write what the scholarship folks want to read. Remember, a good essay has at least three rewrites if not more. Make appointments for uninterrupted time. 12. References for scholarships. Be sure to approach your references now, and give them the deadline by which you need to have your reference. 13. Enter and exit the TLC through different doors until fixed. The door won't stay unlocked from the outside, so enter through the TLC office, but please, please exit out the broken door. It works fine for exiting as it never locks from the inside. This will avoid some of the bottlenecks we've had in the office area while students are coming and going. 1 4. JAM THE GYM Warm Regards, Mary DATE: January 12, 2009 Dear TRiO Students: After what seemed to be a long, first week, we made it to week two. Hopefully you are all comfortably settled in your winter term classes. It is wonderful to see you in the TRiO Learning Center working diligently from the very beginning of the term. That will definitely keep you on a success track. There is a great deal of news for the week. Please read carefully! 1. Test Anxiety Workshop this Friday, January 16, 2:30 - 4:00 in 1/222. Don't miss this valuable workshop with John Steele. 2. Transfer Workshop next Friday, January 23, 2:30 - 4:00, in 19/232. If you are planning on transferring or dual enrolling in the next academic year, it is crucial that you attend this workshop to get valuable information from former students who have successfully transferred and professionals from transfer institutions. 3. You must sign up for sign up for the Lane performance of Godspell by Friday, January 23rd. The play is Thursday, February 5, but the theater department is expecting a large audience and wants to be sure they can accommodate us. They want to know how many TRiO students will be attending so they can reserve our seats. This is a great opportunity to see a wonderful musical for free. They only offer this free viewing to TRiO students, so take advantage! And please, don't sign up and then not show up. It's a huge disappointment when that happens. 4. Sign up for upcoming workshops and events in the TLC. Please show up when you sign up--you will benefit! So even if you'd rather go home on a Friday afternoon, or not return to campus for an evening performance, know that you will be glad you attended! 5. Week 2 TLC Schedule is attached and posted in the TLC. New Friday closing time is 4:00 p.m. Three of our tutors are absent this week, which is a first! Friday is the only day the schedule is compromised. Be sure to check this schedule to see when there is math and Office 2007 help this Friday, 1/16. 6. Welcome new tutors Marsha and Jake. Note they cover all the math and a lot of science. They can help you on the computer as well. 7. Tutor Appointments start Week 2. Please read the instructions attached to the appointment book and only sign up in the yellow areas with your first and last names. You are entitled to three 30-minute appointments each week, but are not to monopolize any one tutor's day or week. Several tutors cover most subjects, so take advantage of that and the times. Remember your appointment dates as three "no shows" for appointments will cause you to lose that privilege for the remainder of the term. 8. Sign up now for a Study Group with a TLC tutor. Attending a study group weekly is a great way to assure you understand the material and are prepared for tests. They really work! If you are in a structured math or science course, study groups are especially helpful. Sign up with all your available times each day, so that we have options to create a 50-minute study group during one of those times. A minimum of three TRiO students is required to start a group, and students are expected to attend each week to maintain it. If you must be absent, let Nancy and/or the tutor know. Ask Nancy about a study group for you if you aren't sure. 9. Besides the TRiO Transfer Workshop that is scheduled on Friday, January 23, college representatives from a number of different colleges (see the attached flyer) will be in the Lane Cafeteria from 10 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Stop by the tables to pick up information about admissions and programs. 10. This IS the time to plan for transferring. Deadlines for transfer applications are approaching, especially for priority admissions. Know what the deadlines are, and start the applications now. One way TRiO can help is by providing a letter that will allow you to defer the Application Fee. Stop by and ask Marla for that. 11. This is also SCHOLARSHIP SEASON!!! OSAC and Lane Foundation applications are available. For those who have applied for OSAC in the past, the process is different this year, although the essays and activities chart are the same. Upcoming Scholarship Workshops include: ~~Wednesday, January 14, 3:30 - 5:00, 19/243 ~~Tuesday, February 3, 3:30 - 5:00, 19/243 ~~Wednesday, February 18, 3:30 - 5:00, 19/243 Sign up in Career and Employment Services for these workshops. You will also want to plan to attend: "How to Pay for College in One Day!" on Saturday, January 24. Pick up an information sheet on Marla's desk. It's a free workshop, but please try to register ahead of time. 12. Are you interested in attending OSU? Want to do a TRiO Tour up there? We are considering scheduling a tour so we need to know if you are still interested. We would do the tour on a Friday, possibly February 27th or March 6th. It will take most of the day, so you will probably miss some classes. Please let Marla know by January 16th if you are interested, and which date you can commit to. 13. Have you submitted your FAFSA? Do it now! 14.TLC door won't unlock. Please enter through the office, but continue to exit from the TLC door into the hallway until further notice. 15. Emergency exit from the TLC is out the door into the hallway, turn left and go around the corner to exit down the stairs and head all the way out to the road coming up the hill. A tutor will lead you and one will stay behind to lock the room. You may safely leave your things. The emergency exit instructions are posted on the door. Please take a moment to read them and even check out the exit route. 16. Please keep an eye on your valuables. Leaving your things unattended anywhere on campus is a risk you don't want to take. The TLC is no exception. Tutors can't keep an eye on your things, so please take them with you as you move about the room. If you need to leave them, have a buddy watch them or close them well and put them in front of Nancy's desk for a short while. 17. Saving your work at Lane: Most of you have flash drives, but as we all know, flash drives can get lost or left at home. Always save your work under your L number (My Documents) as well as on your flash drive. NetStorage is only accessible by you through your L #. It's easy to use both at Lane and when you are at home. The Home@IC Tree has the work you saved at Lane under your L number, and you can access your saved documents from home. You can also upload your home-created documents to Lane's NetStorage database by using the NetStorage command tool bar above the white field (right side). Here's a step-by-step easy-to-learn instructional for using NetStorage. A little practice makes it a simple task. Log into NetStorage:
Uploading to NetStorage from Home:

Please contact us in the next day or so if you heard from us regarding your fall transcript. 8. Time to submit your FAFSA for 2009-10! Update it and send it in now. Do your best to estimate your 2008 income, and then once you have your 2008 taxes completed, you can update the FAFSA once more. Go to http://2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/finaid/fafsa-app.htm to get going on next year's FAFSA. 9. TLC Schedule is not final. We won't have a permanent schedule until Week Three. The schedule is attached and also posted in the TLC. Tutors are still working their schedules out, but we will have coverage in all the usual subjects throughout each day. The schedule for Week One is posted in the lab and attached. Please welcome back familiar tutors and our new math tutor Jake. 10. STUDY GROUPS: Start signing up now to get study groups started. Put all your available times down so we can find a time at least three students can all meet for 50 minutes each week with a TRiO tutor. Study groups have proven success rates with students who use them regularly. So does tutoring for that matter. Make use of both. We're here for you! 11. Last day to withdraw with a full refund is Sunday, 1/11/09. 12. New Cards: You each have a new card for the term. Yellow cards for students who entered in the fall are in the front. Blue cards for returning students from previous years are behind those, and pinkish cards for the new students entering in winter term are filed behind the blue cards. It's easier when you only have to look in your color group. Don't forget to always sign in/out and place cards in the stand-up rack when you leave. 13. Fridge rules. The fridge and microwave are at your disposal. Please eat only at the white table and remember to bring food for only one day and not leave food past that day; If you forget once in a while, that's okay, but as space is limited, two days is the limit. We will continue to throw out food left for over two days, AND as we don't wash out containers,if you have personal utensils or containers in the fridge, you must remember to take these items home in the allotted time; they will get tossed. Please, everyone, staff included, mark any and all food, and especially those many yogurts, and keep an eye on the expiration dates before bringing new ones. Each term yogurts tend to pile up with lots of outdated ones taking usable space. Leftover food and drink containers are not to be left in the TLC. Once you are done, you must take those containers with you. Put them in your car or backpack, but we can't have them piling up on the microwave or table. Recycle bins are conveniently placed next to the food kiosk. Thanks for keeping the TLC clean! Have a great first week. We look forward to seeing you very soon! Take good care of yourself and give yourself extra time to get a parking place at Lane in the first week. Warm Regards, Mary Mary Parthemer, Director The TRiO Learning Center is a Student Support Services program funding by the US Department of Education, Division of Special Services, Title IV, Higher Education Act of 1965, ($244,735 in 2008-09). |
