Hopefully we will see all of you in the TLC getting all your final projects and papers done, and preparing for your final exams. DATE: February 25, 2008 Dear TRiO Students: Week 8! This must mean that spring is near... 5. Math Study Groups continue as usual. Please be patient and attend your group as scheduled. The process for hiring the new tutor is taking just a bit longer than expected, but we will be hiring at least one skilled tutor, and possibly two, who can cover all the math that is needed. 7. GRADUATION INFORMATION: Deadline for students to apply for inclusion in the Lane 2008 Graduation Booklet is April 30, 2008. Applications may be submitted after this date, and students may participate in the commencement ceremony, however the student's name will not be published. Students who apply by April 30 will receive an official degree evaluation close to the end of spring term. Applications are processed in date order and students who apply early will receive their information earliest. Students who meet the deadline will be part of the priority review group for degree/certificate completion when spring grades are final DATE: February 19, 2008 Dear TRiO Students: We hope you enjoyed the beautiful, long weekend, and had the opportunity to catch upon school work AND have some fun! It's week seven! This term is flying by. 1. Advance Registration for spring term will end in less than two weeks on March 3rd. Be sure to register early. 2. Friday, February 29th is the deadline to change grade options or drop a class. Be sure to come in this week if you are thinking about changing your grade options or dropping a class. There are financial aid implications that we can help you think about. 3. Want to change a habit that gets in the way of your success? Enroll in eliminating Self-Defeating Behavior, a two credit spring term class where you will learn a process to change the habit to self-enhancing behavior. The class meets T/Th 1:00-2:20, starting Week two of the term and finishing Week 8 of the term. The CRN is 41703. 4. TLC Tutor Changes: Megan is off for the rest of the term. She's the very pregnant one, for those who are wondering. Other tutors will be covering this week, but we expect to have an excellent new tutor on board very soon. Our expectations are that the same subjects will be covered during the same shifts. Study groups will continue as scheduled with other tutors. 8. WOMEN'S CENTER EVENTS ON BUYING A HOME, STARTING A BUSINESS 9. Scholarship Application Deadlines are fast approaching! OSAC application is due March 1, Lane Foundation application is due March 13. Did you know there is a scholarship specifically for TRiO students in the Lane Foundation Book? That means you are only competing with about 100 other students because 80 of our students won't be back next year due to graduation and transfer. Be sure to apply! 10. Scholarship Help: Nancy's scholarship workshop on "How To Get Started: FAFSA & OSAC," will be held from 2:00 to 3:00 on both Tuesday and Wednesday every week. Anyone wanting to apply for scholarships can attend. We'll meet in the TLC, as you will want to get online. Also available in the TLC are two folders of scholarship hints and information including sample essays. These must be checked out same as books in the TLC. REMEMBER! The Deadlines are approaching: OSAC application is due March 1 and Lane Foundation application is due March 13. These are great opportunities to apply for multiple scholarships with one application process. And even better, the Lane application uses the same essays and Activities Chart as the OSAC application uses. 11. TRiO Writing Tutors fine tune scholarship essays. Scholarship essays need a lot of reworking. Be sure to check your essays with a writing tutor. TRiO writing tutors, Jenn, Lynn, Megan, Nancy, and Amanda, are all familiar with the specifications for scholarship essays. Appointments are a good idea, as you get 30 minutes of uninterrupted time with a tutor. All tutors can help you navigate through FAFSA and OSAC. 12. TIPS FOR COMPETITIVE SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS 13. For more information contact Jackie Bryson at 463-5164 or e-mail. Have a great week! We look forward to seeing you in the TLC. Warm Regards, Mary DATE: February 11, 2008 Dear TRiO Students: It is Week 6 and we are on the downward side of the term. No time to waste. It has been so great to see so many of you in the TLC on a regular basis. We want to see all of you in here, so if you haven't been making it in, now is the time! News for the week: 1. UNIVERSITY OF OREGON TOUR--NEXT WEEK ON PRESIDENT'S DAY! This is much more than a tour. You will meet with Admissions, Financial Aid, Academic Learning Services, Student Support Services (their TRiO program) as well as have a tour of the campus. Lunch is provided. This is scheduled for President's Day (February 18th) so you won't miss any classes. Sign up by Monday, February 11 (so we can plan for transportation) in the TLC or by contacting Marla at 463-3131 or at nortonm@lanecc.edu. If you have any questions, talk to Claudia. 2. Don't miss mid-February deadlines at the University of Oregon (and be sure to check out deadlines for other schools you might be attending next year). The Family and Human Services Program and Elementary Education Program both have mid-February application deadlines. Check with Claudia to help answer questions. Get your Application Fee Deferral Form from Marla. 3. U of O Academic Advising/Counseling is available at Lane every other Tuesday from 1:00-5:00. February 19th, March 4th, March 11th, April 15th, April 29th, May 13th, and May 27th. Sign up in the Counseling Office. 4. Are you planning on graduating this Spring or Summer? It's time to think about applying for graduation! Participation in the spring graduation commencement requires completing all degree or certificate requirements by the end of spring term, or having nine or fewer credits remaining after the completion of spring term. The graduation application deadline is April 30th, but your application date puts you in line for getting your transcripts officially evaluated which must happen before your degree is conferred. That will inform you if there is anything missing. Once a student applies for graduation they have two terms, including the term of application, to complete their degree or certificate. So if you won't be finishing your credits until summer, please wait until the beginning of Spring term to apply. But, if you know you will be done by the end of spring, you can apply now. 5. Want to buy a home but feel it is out of your reach? Need help paying for education or starting a business? Come to the Women's Center for a presentation about NEDCO on Wed. Feb. 20 from 1:30 - 2:15, or Wed. Feb. 27 from 12:00 - 12:45. NEDCO is a private, non-profit agency that helps families build assets and will match your savings 3 to 1 to help you reach your goals! 6. Have you Advance Registered for Spring Term? Don't miss out on the classes and schedule you want. Come in to talk to Claudia or see your Department Advisor/Counselor to help you set up your schedule. 7. Classes to consider for Spring term: Eliminating Self-Defeating Behavior - This class helps students change a significantly bothersome behavior. Former students have quit smoking, worked to diminish anger and procrastination, quit overspending and learned to follow a budget, as well as changed a host of other self-defeating behaviors. Several former students have said they made more progress in this seven-week class than they had previously in months or years of therapy! Sign up now: CRN 41703 T/Th 1:00 - 2:20 Transition to the University - This class is designed for the student who plans to transfer to a four-year university within the next few terms. It is a three-credit transfer course, team taught by faculty from LCC and the University of Oregon, which will prepare students to make a successful academic and personal transition from the community college to the university. Many class sessions will take place at the University of Oregon. In scheduling their classes, students should consider the need for transport time to and from the University campus between classes. Students in the course will get information from Financial Aid, Academic Learning Services, the Knight Library, and Computing Services as well as other campus support services. In addition, students will receive instruction in academic and personal survival skills necessary for success at the university level. Look under Career in the on-line class schedule--CLP is offered at various times. 8. Mid-term Progress Report forms available in the TRiO Office. Pick some up, give them to your instructors and learn how you are doing in your classes. If you are struggling in any way, please come in and talk to us to strategize about getting back on track. 9. Please evaluate any TRiO tutor with whom you have worked this term. Each tutor needs ten evaluations, so if one tutor helped you with two different subjects, please evaluate that tutor for each and on separate forms. The yellow evaluations forms are available on each table. Please do evaluations this week. Take good care, come in to study, and let us know if there is anything we can help you with. Warm Regards, Mary DATE: February 4, 2008 Dear TRiO Students: Week 5 - definitely the middle of the term. Are you coming in to prepare for mid-term exams? Getting help with your papers and projects? Put them on vibrate, but not on a table where the vibration makes a lot of noise. Also, should you get a call, please just put the call on hold while you leave the TLC and then take the call when you are completely out of the TLC and away from the door if it is open. Take care of yourselves and stay well. We'll see you in the TLC. Warm Regards, Mary DATE: January 29, 2008 Dear TRiO Students: Here we are at Week 4, starting it out with a snow day! Hopefully, everyone had fun with that and no mishaps. Current study groups are: Math 60 - 12:00 to 12:50 Wednesdays with Megan in Room 19/231J in the COOP office area. 9. Which math, which tutor? Individual TRiO Tutors cover the range of math courses offered at Lane. All TRiO tutors tutor Math 10 through Math 60. Megan and Amanda have extensive experience tutoring through Math 111 and integral and differential calculus (M240s, M250s). Adam and Bill do calculus too and will work with you to get an understanding of the problem. Adam and Bill are our late afternoon math tutors; late afternoons are a quiet time in the TLC. Bill and Lynn are most experienced tutoring through Math 111 and can explain algebra and geometry in simple terms. Jenn is just as good at explaining basic math, geometry, and algebra through Math 95. Nancy pretty much stops with Math 60, but can sometimes help with Maths 65 and 95 and geometry. The TLC schedule is a color-coded guide to each tutor's shifts and subjects. The pages of the tutor appointment book has yellowed time slots in which you can sign up for a total of three appointments each week with various tutors. 10. Warm Regards, Mary DATE: January 21, 2008 Dear TRiO Students: Hope you are enjoying the sunshine and staying warm! These are a particularly helpful success strategy for math. If you are interested in forming a study group, you must fill out the form on the blue clipboard (on the information table) with all available times you can meet. When three or more students can meet on a weekly basis at a mutual time, we can form a study group led by a TRiO tutor. Here are the study groups formed so far this term: Math 111 Study Group meets Wednesdays from 2: to 2:50 with Bill. Building 1, Room 216. Math 95 Study Group meets Mondays from 1:00 to 1:50 with Megan. Room to be announced. Watch the board! 7. Muddling in Moodle? Fear not! WORD 2007? When you save documents on the new system, don't save as WORD 2007, scroll down and save your documents as WORD 2003, and you will be able to open them at Lane on any computer. If you need help, ask a tutor. 10. FAFSA: It's time to submit your FAFSA for 2008-09. The sooner you get your FAFSA in, the better Financial Aid package you might get. You can estimate your income and when you get your 2007 taxes done, you can update the FAFSA. Be sure to include ANY schools that you might attend in 2008-09. It does no harm to include a number of schools, so if there is any chance you might transfer, be sure to include the schools you might consider attending. 11. Please recycle all cans bottles and plastic containers in the recycle bins in the hall next to the snack bar. Please don't put in our trash can. Thanks! 12. Department of Health Services will have an opportunity for single lower income adults to apply for Oregon Health Plan Standard. They anticipate a large volume of applicants for the estimated 5000 slots available. The process for application is outlined on the attached Word document. Please note that reservations for the application are accepted from January 28th - to February 29th. This is just to get on the list. Then DHS will draw names randomly and send applications to those people, who must return them within 30 days. They still must qualify for OHP and submit a complete application in order to become eligible for services. 13. Updated TRiO Tutor Schedule is attached. Have a great week. Stop in and see us often! You will meet with Admissions, Financial Aid, Academic Learning Services, Student Support Services (their TRiO program) as well as have a tour of the campus. Lunch is provided. This is scheduled for President's Day (February 18th) so you won't miss any classes. Sign up in the TLC or by contacting Marla at 463-3131 or at nortonm@lanecc.edu. If you have any questions, talk to Claudia. 5. SCHOLARSHIP SEASON IS UPON US! University of Oregon General University Scholarship for Transfer students is due February 1 (http://financialaid.uoregon.edu/SC-download.htm). The OSAC application is due March 1 (http://www.getcollegefunds.org/eapp.html), and the Lane Foundation application is due March 13 (http://2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/foundation/scholarshipopps.htm). The OSAC and Lane Foundation application include hundreds of possible scholarships and you can apply for as many as you qualify for with a single application process. Get started now. Scholarship Help: Nancy's scholarship workshop on "How To Get Started: FAFSA & OSAC," will be held from 2:00 to 3:00 on both Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Anyone wanting to apply for scholarships can attend. We'll meet in the TLC, as you will want to get online. Also available in the TLC are two folders of scholarship hints and information including sample essays. These must be checked out same as books in the TLC. 6. Study groups for winter term. Study groups are a proven success strategy for TRiO students. Sign up on the blue clipboard on the information table. Put all your available times down. Study groups are formed when three or more students have a common time in which they can meet for 50 minutes. We'll set you up with a TRiO tutor. Ask any tutor for help signing up or with any other questions about study groups. 7. TLC Tutoring Appointments start this week. You can make three 30-minute appointments each week with a TRiO tutor (a total of over 13 hours of private tutoring per term). Appointments are made by filling out only the yellow highlighted areas of a tutors page in the appointment book. Pencil in your first and last name on the two yellow lines of the appointment. If you cannot make an appointment, be sure to cancel. Call Marla at 463-3131 or come in and erase your name so another student can use that time. Three no shows results in losing the privilege of making appointments during that term. Using tutors is a success strategy that puts TRiO students ahead of the game. Ask any tutor for help signing up for appointments and don't forget there is drop-in tutoring all day. Just sign up on the board for assistance. 8. HELP KEEP FREE TUTORING IN TRIO AND ACROSS CAMPUS: The Tutoring CRNs are listed next to the computers. Registering in these courses assures we get federal funding for tutoring. These are no-cost, no attendance, no credit courses that represent tutoring at Lane. Note the list of general subjects and corresponding CRNs on the typing stands next to your monitors. Please register for all courses in which you expect to get tutoring help this term, whether in TRiO or in another tutoring lab. Tutors can help you. 9. Always log on and off computers. Don't use a computer without logging yourself in; if the monitor does not display the log-in page with the blue beach scene, someone forgot to log out. Log that student out, and log yourself in. Protect yourself by always logging off when you exit a computer station. 10. Computer Alert: Sleep mode. Just wiggle the mouse and the monitor will come alive. Computers may look off, but they are in "deep freeze," an energy-saving mode initiated over the break. Please don't try to turn them on. If jiggling the mouse doesn't work, that particular computer may not have been used for over 2 hours, which in that case, it will actually have turned itself off, another energy-saving mode. Please remember to try the mouse first and give the computer a few seconds to come alive. 11. Cell phones need to be off or on vibrate before you enter the TLC. Cell phones ringing in the TLC are most disruptive to thought and studying. If you take a call, put the caller on hold and exit the room to have your conversation. Please don't initiate any calls until you are fully out of the TLC. 12. TLC Card Colors: Your cards in the box are pink, blue and yellow. You only have to search through your color group to find your card and not through the whole section. Students who entered TRiO fall term 2007 have yellow cards. Yellow cards are the first cards filed behind the section letter (A, B, C, etc.). Returning TRiO students from the 06-07 academic year or before have blue cards. Blue cards are filed behind any yellow cards. If you are a new TRiO student winter term, your card is pink, so start at the back of the letter section, as your card will be put behind any blue cards when we file. 13. Borrowing books, calculators, etc. in the TLC: To check out a book, a scholarship folder, a calculator or other material while working in the TLC, give your student ID to the tutor, who will then sign the item out to you while you have it in your possession. Be sure to return the item to a tutor before leaving the TLC. The tutor will return your ID to you and mark that you have returned the borrowed item. No borrowed books, calculators, or materials are allowed to leave the TLC. 14. Please contact us if you have received an e-mail about your fall transcripts. 15. Remember to get your bus pass sticker this week at the bookstore. 16. Martin Luther King Day--Monday, January 21--no school and campus is closed. Have a great week and let us know how we can help you have a successful term. Be well! Warm Regards, Mary DATE: January 7, 2008 Dear TRiO Students: Happy New Year! Scholarship Study Group/Workshops: For anyone wanting to apply for scholarships. Beginning Week 2, Nancy will hold duplicate workshops from 2:00 to 3:00 each Tuesday and Wednesday. So if you can't come one day, come on the other. The topics are designed to keep you on track for the deadlines. Make appointments with writing tutors Jenn, Nancy, Amanda (and later Lynn) to work on your essays each week. Week 2: Getting Started/FAFSA/OSAC 6. Fall Transcript Review: We reviewed fall transcripts last week, and will be contacting people by e-mail today if your transcript indicated you had any difficulties in fall term. Please contact us in the next day or so if you hear from us regarding your fall transcript. 7. Time to submit your FAFSA for 2008-09! Update it and send it in now. Do your best to estimate your 2007 income, and then once you have your 2007 taxes completed, you can update the FAFSA once more. Go to http://2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/finaid/fafsa-app.htm to get going on next year's FAFSA. 8. TLC Schedule is not final. Over the break one of the tutors, Lynn, had a family emergency. After Week 1, she won't be with us again until later in the term. The TLC schedule will be revised to cover her absence. The schedule is attached and also posted in the TLC. There are no appointments during Week 1. 9. STUDY GROUPS: Start signing up now to get study groups started. Put all your available times down so we can find a time at least three students can all meet for 50 minutes each week with a TRiO tutor. Study groups have proven success rates with students who use them regularly. So does tutoring for that matter. Make use of both. We're here for you! 10. Last day to withdraw with a full refund is Sunday, 1/13/08. Have a great first week. We look forward to seeing you very soon! Take good care of yourself and give yourself extra time to get up to Lane on these icy mornings. Warm Regards, Mary The TRiO Learning Center is a Student Support Services program funding by the US Department of Education, Division of Special Services, Title IV, Higher Education Act of 1965, ($244,735 in 2008-09). |
