Here we are near the end of the term and academic year. It has been wonderful seeing many of you in the TLC working hard to complete final papers and projects and prepare for finals.

Week 10 News:

-TRiO Achievement Celebration coming soon! This is the most fun event of the year. You don't want to miss it! Come celebrate your successes with us! Bring your family and friends along. If you are graduating you will get your TRiO purple cord. Potluck, gifts, awards, inspiring speakers! Sign up in the TLC or the TRiO Office, e-mail, or give us a call to get on the list.

-Please complete the TRiO Evaluation Form. Forms in TLC and TRiO Office and turn it in for a treat. We want your feedback. We want to know what works so we can do more of that, and what doesn't work so we can change it. Also please complete the form that tells us your plans for next fall. Also please come in or call to schedule an Exit interview if you won't be here next year.

-Remember to check your finals schedule - it is different that your class schedule. http://2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/schedule/finals.htm

-TLC Finals Week Schedule for tutors and TLC hours is different. Please see the attached schedule for hours and tutors during finals week.

-Farewell to tutors. Some tutors won't be around finals week and some will be out of town and thus not attending the TRiO Celebration. Though the tutors are busy, week 10 is a good time to drop in for a quick farewell to those who have helped you this year.

-Empty the fridge of anything you wish to keep as it will be defrosted on June 9th.

-NetStorage will be emptied over summer break. Be sure to save anything you wish to keep onto a flash drive or email documents to yourself--as attachments. Ask a tutor for help if you need it.
-TRIO is now open for enrollment! Do you know friends who would be interested in TRiO for fall term? Just tell them to stop by the TRiO Office and complete a screening form to be sure they are eligible. If they are, they will receive an application to fill out and return so that we can review. Please pass it on....

-Everyone has their fall schedule, right? If not, do it now!

- NOW HIRING STUDENT OUTREACH REPRESENTATIVES FOR 2011-2012
Enrollment and Student Financial Services is now accepting applications for this important, exciting student job that will allow current Lane students to give campus tours, attend on and off campus recruitment events and showcase the college to new and prospective students. Applications are available in Building 1, Room 101, or online at lanecc.edu/es Applications are due by Thursday, May 5 at 5 p.m.! Contact David Van Der Haeghen, Student Recruitment & Outreach Coordinator, at 5688 with questions.

-Be Aware--If you drop all of your classes, there are serious financial and academic consequences. If you are receiving financial aid, you will be put on FA Suspension and may have to repay a portion of the financial aid you received. The amount you must repay will appear as a bill on your Lane account. You will not be able to register for classes until the bill is paid. If the bill is not paid within 3 months, your account will be sent to collections. The collections process can be lengthy and could delay your re-entry into Lane. Always check with Enrollment Services before making decisions to drop of change grading options.

-Career Fair. Wednesday, April 20th, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Center for Meeting and Learning, building 19. This is a great opportunity for students, friends and family to network with employers from the Eugene/Springfield area. Get more information at http://2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/mpr/news/rel01110.htm.

-Study Groups depend on attendance to continue throughout the term. Please enter the dates and times for your group (see email to individual groups from Nancy) in your weekly planners or phones so you don't forget or have a scheduling conflict during that time. Contact the office (463-3131) or email Nancy if you cannot attend. Please be courteous to other students in your study group and in the TLC by silencing and putting away your phones for the duration of your group or tutoring session. Attention to phones distracts and impedes the learning process for everyone and slows the tutor down when others are waiting to be helped.

-Tutor Evaluation time is here. Please fill out the yellow evaluation sheets for any tutor with whom you have worked this term. It is important that you use the ten-point scale and not place "checks" or "X"s in the scoring box at the top. Each tutor needs ten evaluations. Those in study groups, please don't forget your tutor counts on you for evaluations. Thanks from your tutors!

- STUDENT AFFAIRS COUNCIL HOSTS SOCIAL MEDIA DISCUSSIONS
The Student Affairs Council invites all faculty, staff and students to join us for a three-part discussion series on technology in the classroom. We'll utilize what we hear as we consider the possible development of policies regarding appropriate use in the classroom and beyond.

If as you are leaving the building, students from rooms 222 and 224 down the hall are heading toward you, redirect them back to the stairs.
  • New TLC Tutor Schedule starts this week. Jake has returned to the schedule, so there was some shifting around. One main difference is Liz is not here on Mondays. As study groups form, we will adjust the schedule on display in the TLC and the appointment schedule in the tutor book. A color copy of the schedule is attached to the e-news.
  • Study Groups are forming. Keep signing up with all your available times even if a group has formed at a time that doesn't work for you. More students signing up yields more options. Sometimes two groups form when at least six students sign up---three who can meet at one time and three who can meet at a different time. Here's what we have so far:
    • Math 95: Tuesdays,  9:00 to 9:50, Room 19/243. Starts this week, 4/5.  Math 111: Mondays, 3:00 to 3:50, Room 19/243. Starts this week, 4/4.  BT 296: Wednesdays, 9 too 9:50. Room 19/249
    • Update on other "almost" groups:
      • Math 20 - Some students asked me, but so far only two have signed up with their available times
      • Math 60 - four options are being examined from the available times those students gave.
      • Math 65 - in process
      • Math 95 - could form a second group at a different time.
  • Graphing Calculator tasks straining your patience? Meet with Matt on Mondays or Wednesdays from 1:30 to 2:30 in the TLC. Matt is an expert on calculator functions and your math needs. Sean, Jake, and Luna can help as well. If there is enough interest (see study group sign up sheet), we may form a half hour session on a weekly basis in the TLC.

March 29, 2011

Happy Spring!  We hope you had a great break and feel ready for the new term.  Be sure to stop in and say hi!   E-News for the week:

  • Transcript Reviews: Kate completed the transcript reviews during spring break, and sent out e-mail messages to those of you who may have some sort of issue on your transcript.  Please contact us as soon as possible this week.
  • TRiO Spring Events & Workshops: Please see the attached flyer for Spring TRiO Events.  Here's one of our first events:
    • Lane production of "The Taming of the Shrew" by William Shakespeare, Thursday, April 7th, 8:00 p.m., Lane Blue Door Theatre.  We have six tickets available for this show. It is expected that if you reserve a ticket you are committed to using that ticket and will show up early for the performance.  We have established a new protocol with the Lane Student Production Association (SPA).  They have been so gracious in the past to give us an unlimited amount of free tickets for their productions, but we have a history of students not following through and not showing up for the shows.  They survive on ticket prices, so seats we didn't use could have been sold.  So now we will have 6 tickets available for Blue Door tickets and 10 tickets available for Mainstage productions.  I will be giving the tickets to the students who sign up, and then it is your responsibility to confirm your reservation with SPA.  The sign-up sheet will have the appropriate slots, plus a waiting list sign-up space.  We are so very lucky to have this arrangement with them, and we want to honor their kindness with follow-through.  Making theater accessible to all is our common goal.  If you haven't seen live theater much, please take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.  Live theatre has to the power to open your mind to new possibilities in your own life.  You may see actors that sit next to you in your classes or this may inspire you to indulge that secret desire you have long had to get involved yourself!  Theatre etiquette guidelines to follow in a future e-news.
  • STUDENT SERVICE ASSOCIATE POSITIONS OPEN

The Counseling Department is recruiting students to apply for Student Service Associate (SSA) positions for the 2011/12 academic year. SSAs serve as mentors to their peers, providing information and support with regard to career exploration, scholarships, employment opportunities and campus resources. SSAs develop great leadership skills while helping others. Interested students can learn more at http://2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/ces/SSA.htm .The application deadline is Thursday, May 5, at 5 p.m. Questions can be directed to Christina Salter, 5813 or Tammy Simpson, 5296.

  • OSU Admissions Advisor available at Lane--On Wednesday, April 20th from 10:00 am - 3:00 pm, Kaleena Tuffo, is available for appointments in the Advising Transfer Center (in Counseling Department) to help students interested in attending OSU.  Students may sign up for their appointments through a link on the OSU website.  The Counseling/Advising front desk will point students in the direction of the Transfer Center.
  • U of O at the Lane Counseling/Advising Office.  April 21st and April 28th UO Academic Advisors will be available from 8:30 - 4:00 and Admissions & Financial Aid will be available from 1:00-4:00.  Make an appointment with the Counseling/Advising front desk if interested.
  • TLC Hours and tutor schedules will change during the first couple of weeks as some of our tutors are still working out their schedules. The attached and posted schedule is the schedule we will follow for week one of spring term.
  • TLC open late on Wednesdays until 5:30. This is a trial run as spring term attendance usually does not warrant staying open late. The sunshine calls and students follow. So, if attendance is minimal on the first three Wednesday of the term, we will not continue to stay open until 5:30 each Wednesday.
  • Reminders to keep the TLC safe and quiet for all to use: Please remember to . . .
    • Sign in and out on your card each visit to the TLC, no matter how short your visit, and keep your cards visible
    • Place your card in the stand up holder when you leave
    • Keep clipped cards alphabetized when looking for your card; do not return card to clip
    • Log on computers with your L # and pin number (like myLane)
    • Log off the computers (no scenic picture) to "log in" screen
    • Turn cell phone to silent before entering TLC
    • Turn off the speakers before removing your headsets
    • Get tutor or office staff assistance to check out texts and calculators (for use in the TLC)
    • Occupy only one space; store your gear while at computers
    • Avoid interrupting tutor appointments or drop-in sessions.
    • Sign up on the drop in board for tutoring assistance
    • If you go for help to a tutor at the table, bring your card with you
    • Eat only at the white table; no drinks, containers, or food to the computer stations
    • Keep lids on all liquid cups
    • Label food and drinks you put in the fridge
  • Tutor appointments start in Week 2: You can make up to three 30-minute appointments each week. Sign up only in the yellowed sections of a tutor's scheduled shift. Use pencil only and put your first name on the first line and your last name on the second line. For any appointment, it is imperative that you come to that appointment with specific issues you want to address---please be prepared for your tutor appointment. Remember to call and cancel beforehand if you cannot make it for some reason.
  • Drop-in Tutoring: When you want a drop-in tutor, please write your name, time, and the subject (plus the level if math), on the drop-in board. Please don't sign for drop-in tutoring when you have an appointment coming up within 15 minutes. Be considerate of another student's time with a tutor, as drop-in tutoring lasts only five or ten minutes with each student. If tutors appear to be in a session, please do not interrupt them. When you interrupt a tutor in the process of explaining something to another student, you break the concentration of both the tutor and student being tutored.
  • Find tutors you need: Remember to check the pink sign designating available drop in tutor(s) at any given time(on top of the grey cabinet on the check-in table). When a tutor goes into an appointment, that name is removed to the appointment sign and taken to the appointment. The remaining tutor, who can get you books, calculators, and headphones is also the drop-in tutor for that 30-minute period.
  • Spring Study Groups: Sign up now on the blue clipboard on the Information Table. Get your group started early, so you will stay on track for your success. Math groups often continue with the next level. Be sure to put all your available times each day, so we have options.
