June 1, 2010

Dear TRiO Students:

Here we are near the end of the term and academic year. It has been wonderful seeing many of you in the TLC working hard to complete final papers and projects and prepare for finals.

Week 10 News:

1. TRiO Achievement Celebration coming soon!  This is the most fun event of the year.  You don’t want to miss it!  Come celebrate your successes with us!  Bring your family and friends along.  Potluck, gifts, awards, inspiring speakers!  Sign up in the TLC or the TRiO Office, e-mail, or give us a call to get on the list.

2. Please complete the TRiO Evaluation Form (forms in TLC and TRiO Office or on-line through myLane) and turn it in for a treat.  We want your feedback. We want to know what works so we can do more of that, and what doesn’t work so we can change it.  Also please complete the form that tells us your plans for next fall.  Also please come in or call to schedule an Exit interview if you won't be here next year.

3. Want to use TRiO this Summer? We are considering having the TLC open during the first 8 weeks of summer term. Will you use it?  If you are going to take summer classes, let us know if you will come in to study or use the computers. There will not be a lot of tutoring available.  Just e-mail your feedback back to us.

4. Remember to check your finals schedule - it is different that your class schedule. http://2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/schedule/finals.htm

5. Math 60 Study Group continues to meet in Bldg 16, Room 206 from 3:00 to 3:50 Wednesdays. Last session is June 2.

6. Flash Drive Convenience:  Notice the extensions attached to the monitor stand for plugging in your flash drives. Back up your flash drive work by saving to My Documents on the TRiO computers. The work is confidentially saved under your L#, so no one but you is privy to it. Sure helps when you lose, forget, or misplace even temporarily your flash drive.

7.  YouTube Excel and Math tutorials can now be accessed on the TLC computers except maybe the MAC. These tutorials require the latest version of Flash or Adobe Acrobat.

8. Honor Appointments:  Week ten is the last week this term for appointments and with the Monday holiday, it's going to be a short, hectic week. Please be sure to attend your appointments or cancel them well before as others will likely want to use those times.

9.  Save to flash drives any files and folders from the NetStorage you want to keep beyond this term. After each term your individual NetStorage files are purged from the system.

10. TLC Finals Week Schedule for tutors and TLC hours is different. Please see the attached schedule for hours and tutors during finals week.

11. TRIO is now open for enrollment!  Do you know friends who would be interested in TRiO for fall term?  Just tell them to stop by the TRiO Office and complete a screening form to be sure they are eligible.  If they are, they will receive an application to fill out and return so that we can review.  Please pass it on....

12. Everyone has their fall schedule, right? If not, do it now!

Have a great week!

Warm Regards,

Mary

7.  FaceBook, MySpace, email and personal use of TLC computers. Use of the computers is limited to 15 minutes for personal time, which includes the aforementioned. Please be considerate of other students. Students looking in the door see all the computers are busy and leave. If the busy is personal use, that is detrimental to academic success. During times when the TLC gets busy, students using a computer for personal time will be asked to either start on their assignments or release the computer to a student who needs it.

8.  Tutor Evaluations are a requirement of their positions. Please evaluate, using the 10-point scale on the form, tutors with whom you have worked this term.

9.  Looking for various school supplies in the TLC? The TLC has supplies available for use on the big table. Please use these, but make sure you return the stapler and tape so others can find them. If there is something you don't see, ask Nancy or another tutor, as we have items stashed away like envelopes, sticky notes of various sizes, larger index cards, special markers. and more.

10. Tuesday TLC hours till 5:30. Several of you have used this time, but others may not be aware of the extra half hour you can work in the TLC on Tuesdays.

11.  Phones ringing, singing and honking are a real problem in the TLC. Please turn them off before entering the TLC. The TLC is a quiet zone for studying.

12.  Community Forum: Tammy Simpson from Counseling's Career and Employment will orient students to CSI, Job Search Options and other details on programs and services offered in the Career Center.  The workshop will be Wednesday, May 12th from 11:00-12:00 p.m. in Building 11, Room 250. All students are welcome.

Warm Wishes,

Mary

Dear TRiO Students:

Here we are on the down hill side of the term.  6th week!  Only five more weeks of classes and then Finals. It's critical to be on top of your academic game now, so if you need some motivation or strategies, come in to talk with us.

News for the week:

1.  Reminder that the campus will be closed this Friday, May 7th for a college-wide in-service.  In other words: you have the day off from classes (of course not necessarily homework!)

2. Advance Registration for summer begins tomorrow, Tuesday, May 4th, 7:00 a.m.  Summer classes are much more limited, so you want to get on-line as early as possible and register for the classes you want. Be sure to pay attention to course load. It is much more compressed in the summer, and sometimes hard to study because of the beautiful weather and kids out of school. Be sure you plan well if you are taking summer classes. SEE SUMMER SUCCESS/SURVIVAL TIPS  Flyer on TLC or TRiO desk.

3. Advance Registration for fall begins Tuesday, May 18, 7:00 a.m.  Have you had your Advance Advising yet? Do it now! Be ready.

4.  Do you know what your plans are for next year?  Turn in your form at the front desk (in TLC or TRiO Office) for a chance to win lunch for two at the Renaissance Room and a treat.  If you know that you will be transferring or graduating you need to schedule an exit interview.

5. We need your feedback!  Please complete the simple TRiO Evaluation form.  This helps us know what you would like to see happen in TRiO for next year.  There are copies (salmon color) in the TLC and the TRiO Office.  You can also access this form on-line by going to: ExpressLane, click on Personal Information, and then click on Complete Your On-line Survey.  You can also easily find the survey on myLane.  After entering your pin and password you will be at the homepage, and on the right side under Personal Information there is a Complete Your 0n-line Survey spot to click on.  You will receive a treat and our appreciation.

6. Sign up for the TRiO Achievement Celebration!  Speakers that are inspiring, gifts, potluck, fun!  Friday, June 11th, 11:30-1:30.  Come celebrate the end of the year with us!

7. Get those mid-term progress reports in to your instructors now and get them back as soon as possible so you know how you are doing.

8. Making Wise Choices Workshop: Thursday, May 20th from 3:00-4:00 in 19/241, taught by Mary Parthemer.  Sign up in TLC and we will remind you.  If this is not a convenient day and time then there are two other choices to attend:  Thursday, May 13th from 3:00-3:50 in Bldg. 19/232 and Friday, May 21st from 12:00-12:50 in Bldg. 1/222.  Making Wise Choices educates students on GPA calculation and the various grading options, including pass/no pass, withdrawals, and incomplete grades. We will review Financial Aid expectations for satisfactory academic progress (SAP); provide information on campus support services; and step students through a decision making process designed to help them make wise choices.  May 21st is the final day to make schedule changes for spring term!

9. Phones! Phones! Phones! Phones with their various loud, musical, and personalized ring tones are truly disruptive in the TLC. Please, turn them off or on vibrate before coming into the TLC. If you take a call, just tell them to hold, and don't start your conversation until you leave the room.

10.  TLC is a Fragrance Free Zone.  Spring is hard on allergies of students and tutors alike. Several students and tutors already have physical reactions to artificial fragrances. Some students have had to leave the TLC as they were unable to work in the same room with a student wearing a fragrance. Please refrain from wearing them in the TLC. You can check the list of offending products.

11. Study Groups. It's not too late to join a study group. It's mid-term and from here on study group attendance becomes more of a success strategy than ever. See the list of on-going study groups below and if you are interested attend and be sure your attendance is counted by the tutor. Those of you signed up already, don't forget to attend your group.

Math 60 - 3:00 to 3:50 on Wednesdays with Dylan in Room 16/206

The exhibition consists of both sculpture and ceramics, along with installation work. The show runs from May 3rd through May 20th.  A lecture featuring both artists will be held on May 6th at 3:00 pm with a reception immediately following.  The gallery is located in building 11 on main campus, 4000 E. 30th Avenue in Eugene, Oregon. Dear TRiO Students:

Happy 2nd Week (sorry we are a little late, it even happens to us too!)  It finally feels a little like Spring today! Hooray! Don't let the beautiful, warm weather give you a case of Spring fever that keeps you from doing your work.   News for the week:

1. TRiO will be opening enrollment to new students for 2010-11 in May. Please let your friends and class mates know about open enrollment. For you current TRiO students, we will ask you to complete a form beginning next week that tells us your plans for next year. If you are going to be at Lane you will continue to be a TRiO student and will just need to do a check-in appointment before fall term begins.

2.  Graduating in Spring or Summer? Be sure to get your application in by April 30th. All the info is at http://2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/stuact/gradinfo.htm.

3.  Recruiting for 2009-10 Student Service Associates - The Counseling Department is looking for SSA’s for the next academic year. It is a GREAT on-campus job assisting fellow students with career information, employment resources, scholarship research, class scheduling and ExpressLane functions. Apply on-line: 2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/ces and click on Lane Job Connection. Deadline is April 30th, 5:00 p.m.

4.  Career Fair 2010.  Wednesday, April 21st, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Center for Meeting and Learning, Building 19 Lobby. This is a great opportunity for students, friends and family to network with employers from the Eugene/Springfield area. Get more information at 2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/ces.

5.  Study groups: A great success strategy.  Study groups are totally student generated. Interested students need to sign up with their available times so Nancy can find an hour that works for a minimum of three students. Study groups meet once a week for 50 minutes, just like a class. A TRiO tutor facilitates, and students meet in a separate room to work on coursework and prepare for exams. You must be in a structured math or science course, no self-paced courses.  Check the sign up sheet as there is interest in several math courses or add your own math course if it's not there. Remember, groups require three students meeting weekly, so put down all your available times. Spring term study groups so far are below, but don't forget to use drop-in tutoring and appointments as well.

Math 60 - 3:00 to 3:50 on Wednesdays with Dylan, 16/206, Starts 4/7
Math 65 - 10:00 to 10:50 on Wednesdays with Lynn, inside Tutor Central, Starts 4/7
Math 111 - 9:00 to 9:50 on Wednesdays with Lynn inside Tutor Central, Starts 4/7

6.  Cell phone Etiquette:  Please get in the habit of turning your cell phones off/vibrate before coming into the TLC. Any call you take must be put on hold until you leave the room. Thanks!

7.  Week 2 TLC Schedule is different from Week 1 and should remain the same throughout the term except for additional study groups or subbing for absent tutors. The new schedule is attached to the e-mail and also posted in the TLC.

8. Support tutoring at Lane. Enroll now in the free non-attendance courses listed on the side of each monitor in the TLC. These CRNs represent tutor use at Lane and enrolling gets us funding from the federal government. Enroll for all that apply and ask tutors if you find this confusing, which it easily can be as not all subjects are listed.

9. Personal use of computers:  limit is 15 minutes.  Computers are for academic use.  When computers are in demand in the TLC and you are on  Facebook, MySpace or your e-mail, you may be asked to forfeit your computer to someone who needs it.  Facebook, MySpace, and e-mail are personal use.  Please remember this and be respectful of computer use.

10.  U of O Academic Advising and Counseling will be visiting the Lane Counseling and Advising on Tuesday, April 13th.  If interested, please make an appointment with the front desk at Counseling/Advising.

Warm Regards, Mary

3.  New TLC cards await you: Blue for students who attended before the 2009/2010 academic year, yellow for students who entered this fall, pink for students who enter in January 2010. Remember new ones stick.

  4.  Reminders for TLC Etiquette: Please remember to . . .
  • Keep your cards visible for tutors to see and mark
  • Turn your cell phone off before you enter the TLC
  • Sign in and out on your card each visit to the TLC, no matter how short your visit
  • Place your card in the stand up holder when you leave
  • Keep clipped cards alphabetized when looking for your card and do not return card to clip
  • Eat only at the white table
  • Take no drinks, containers, or food to the computer stations
  • Keep lids on all liquid cups
  • Label food and drinks you put in the fridge
  • Log on computers with your L # and pin number (like ExpressLane)
  • Log off the computers (no scenic picture!!) to "log in" screen
  • Turn off the speakers before removing your headsets
  • Get tutor or office staff assistance to check out texts and calculators (for use in the TLC only)
  • Tutoring protocol = not interrupting appointments or drop-in sessions.
  • Sign up on the drop in board for tutoring assistance
  • Make tutoring appointments (see  instructions below)
  • Use library voices at all times
5.  Special Notice for Return Card File:  On the days Nancy is not here the cards will be tallied but not entered in the computer. They will remain in the stand, alphabetized and clipped as usual, but to make it easier for you, the tutors will separate the cards by color, making it easy to find yours upon your return. This term, Nancy will not be here from noon on Friday through Monday of most weeks, but will tackle the cards first thing on Tuesday mornings to get them back in the card box for you. It will be like any really busy day in the TLC when we can't keep up, but with enough organization to avoid chaos in the card stand.

6.  Tutor appointments start in Week 2: You can make up to three 30-minute appointments each week. Sign up only in the yellowed sections of a tutor's scheduled shift. Use pencil only and put your first name on the first line and your last name on the second line. For any appointment, it is imperative that you come to that appointment with specific issues you want to address---please don't waste both your and the tutor's time looking through your notes during appointment times---be ready! And, a couple of rules, please. We ask that you: 1) not take more than one appointment on any given day with one tutor  2) not take all of one tutor's appointments at the same time daily in one week; e.g., all that tutor's 10:30 appointments. 3) not sign up for drop-in tutoring within 15 minutes of a tutoring appointment for the same subject 4) use pencil in yellow areas only, putting your first name on the top line and your last name on the bottom line 5) call to cancel or erase your name if you no longer need the appointment

7.  Drop-in Tutoring Protocol: To be fair to all students, the TLC policy for tutor assistance is to write your name, time, and the subject (plus the level if math), on the drop-in board. Please don't sign for drop-in tutoring when you have an appointment coming up within 15 minutes. Be considerate of another student's time with a tutor, as drop-in tutoring lasts only five or ten minutes with each student. If tutors appear to be in a session, please do not interrupt them. When you interrupt a tutor in the process of explaining something to another student, you break the concentration of both the tutor and student being tutored and usurp that student's time with the tutor . . . put your name on the board. We make an effort to keep students from waiting more than five or ten minutes, so please be patient and use the drop-in board. Never interrupt a tutoring appointment.

8.  Find tutors you need: Remember to check the pink sign designating available drop in tutor(s) at any given time(on top of the grey cabinet on the check-in table). When a tutor goes into an appointment, that name is removed to the appointment sign and taken to the appointment. The remaining tutor, who can get you books, calculators, and headphones is also the drop-in tutor for that 30-minute period.

9.  Week 1 TLC tutoring schedule is attached and posted on the door, on top of the grey stand on the check-in table and also on the information/supply table in the middle of the room. There will be changes made for Week 2 and the appointment book must wait until we have the Week 2 schedule.

10. Spring Study Groups: Sign up now on the blue clipboard on the Information Table. Get your group started early, so you will stay on track for your success. Math groups often continue with the next level. Be sure to put all your available times each day, so we have options.

11.  Improved Drop-in Tutoring: Tutors will be paying special attention to keep up with the demand of drop-in tutoring. Last term drop-in tutoring was extremely busy, but is usually less hectic spring term. However, we made some changes to be able to get to quick questions, like "how to double space a paper or set the margin." Please don't bother the office staff for computer assistance. Sign up for tutor help on the board with "double space" or "margins" for your subject, and even if we are busy, we will come to your assistance as quickly as possible. However, when we are busy, you may ask the office staff to check out/in books, calculators, and headphones as someone needs to sign those out to you and take or return your I.D. card upon their return. Please do not go behind the desk and help yourself.  Make appointments for papers that are more than one page and to have tutors teach you how to use the computer more efficiently.

12.  Spring Community Forum.  Tour of Student Services:  Student Recruitment and Outreach Coordinator David Van Der Haeghen will offer a tour and explanation of the student services in Building 1.  Learn about TRiO, Career Center, Counseling and Advising, Enrollment Services, Disability Services, A&D program, MCC, Women's Center and more.

13.  Check out myLane through the Lane main page.  We will be putting the TRiO E-news and other TRiO announcements up there soon!!!
