Student Computer Support/Student Help Desk. 463-3333, or if on a Lane phone, simply dial extension 3333. The student Help Desk is under the stairs in the library.
Tutor Evaluations are due. Please evaluate each tutor with whom you have worked this term. Want to know who they are? You can check your card for their initials from tutoring and then check the time you were in the TLC against the tutor staff working that shift. If you are in a study group, please do one for your tutor. If a tutor has tutored you in more than one subject, you can do one for each subject. Each tutor needs ten evaluations each term, so please help us to find out where we are doing great or where we fail you. We use the evaluations to improve our skills and interpersonal communication with you so we can help you succeed.
Why Use NetStorage? My Documents = NetStorage. Save your work often! Already TRiO students have misplaced their flash drives, some never to be found. To be on the safe side, save your documents to a flash drive AND save to "My Documents" on any PC in any computer lab--except the MAC labs. Note: when you are logged onto a PC in Lane's computer labs and in the TLC, your work will automatically be saved in "My Documents" IF that is the drive you specify. That saves your work to NetStorage, and you can access it from other labs on campus. Then you can use a PC in any lab to edit your work.
MAC Users & NetStorage. The Mac in the TLC and the Mac lab computers are not connected to the NetStorage system, but you can get to NetStorage the same as if you were working from your home computer. Save your document to your flash drive and then follow the instructions for home use to log into NetStorage and upload. Pick up a copy the easy to follow directions next to the TLC card box. Suggestion: Save in *.rtf when working with two systems as MAC and PC or older versions of Windows and newer.
Cover your Coughs and Sneezes. Flu and cold season is here and Lane's team in the Health Clinic advise we wash our hands often and always cover our mouths and noses when sneezing and coughing. The best coverage comes from tucking your nose and mouth against your elbow area. The TLC has several bottles of hand sanitizer about, which you are welcome to use. Don't forget, keyboards and mice carry germs from previous users, so you may want to sanitize your hands before and after you use a computer.
Fridge Friendly Protocol. Please remember to label and date your fridge items. Unlabeled food may be thrown out if no one labels it within a couple of days. Bring only what you need for the current day as there is not enough room to store more. Both students and staff use that fridge, and, you'll notice, it's pretty small. Thank you to all those who label their food regularly.
Math and Chem Handouts. Don't forget the addition of a display stand of math handouts for all levels on the Info Table and a binder of chemistry handouts above the printer.
More math tutor coverage in TLC. Two study groups have canceled, so the tutors are again in the TLC. Mondays, Mac is back from 10:00 to 11:00 to tutor and has an appointment block in that period. Tuesdays Jake and Sam give double coverage from 1:00 to 2:00 in the TLC. Starting next week, Sam will have an appointment block a 1:00 and Jake will have one at 1:30. Take advantage of these additional hours of math tutor time.
Term's End Shakespeare Showcase. The Term's End Shakespeare Showcase will be held Saturday, December 3, shows at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., Blue Door Theatre, Building 6. This free event includes live music and is a community collaboration directed by Sparky J. Roberts. Donations are welcome for sustenance of the Student Productions Association. Limited to age 10 and older.

If you are starting to struggle in any way, please contact Kate or Bree as soon as possible so they can help you plan how to get back on track. Are you in the TLC on a regular basis? Setting appointments with Tutors? Mid-term Progress Reports--Be sure to pick up the forms from the front desk in the office, or at the check-in desk in the TLC. Distribute them to your instructors and ask them to complete them in the next few days. Please contact us when the cards are returned to you if you have any concerns about how you are doing in a class. There is time now to improve your performance!
TRiO students are invited to a free preview of the Lane play "Dog Meets Dog: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead." Thursday, November 3rd, 7:30 p.m., Lane's Blue Door Theater. Student study tip! Index flash cards! Yep, you know about those, but one of our students took it a bit further. Arline cut her 3 x 5 cards in half, making the size more manageable. She punched a hole in one corner and then clipped that corner a tad to allow it to move freely in a clippable key ring. You can add cards as needed. She cut a piece of stiff colored paper to size and/or used a highlighter to mark the edges of chapter and section dividers. This handy-dandy easy-to-use flash card system works for any subject. She started with one like those sold in the bookstore, but decided she could make her own and tailor it to fit her needs better and for less.
TLC will close early, at 4:00, one more time on Wednesday, 11/2, for a new student orientation. Please vacate the computers by then, though you are welcome to stay in the room if you don't mind the other activity.
Food Table: By student request over the years, please don't put purses and backpacks that have contact with various floors most of the day on the food table. Keep that surface as clean as possible for students to eat there safely. We can't re-sanitize it throughout the day. Also, please always take your empty containers to the recycle bins by the snack bar. And remember---No food or drink containers (empty or not) are allowed at the computer stations.
Cell phones need to be turned off BEFORE you enter the TLC. Please do that. We have had a lot of phones going off each day, which is very disturbing for some students. If you set your phone to vibrate, instead of ring, please keep it nearby. Students have been disturbed by "buzzing" phones that are left in backpacks and coats with no one to stop the sound.

Week 5! There is no doubt about it. This term is well underway! LOTS OF NEWS!! READ CAREFULLY.
Midterm Madness. Are you behind in math or with writing assignments for any course? It's midterm, and from here on the work gets harder. You need to be caught up and soon. Check in with tutors, make appointments, get caught up then stay ahead! Work with tutors to get you over humps and clear up confusion. Tutors can show you how to check your work and use your text, and can clarify difficult assignments, so that you won't be stuck late at night with only a cup of coffee to help and no one to ask.
Mid-term Progress Reports. Be sure to pick up the forms from the front desk in the office, or at the check-in desk in the TLC. (They are also attached here, 2 on a page, if you would like to print them out or attach them for on-line instructors). Distribute them to your instructors and ask them to complete them in the next few days. Please contact us when the cards are returned to you if you have any concerns about how you are doing in a class. There is time now to improve your performance!
Advance Registration for Winter term began Tuesday, 10/18. Be sure to get your classes planned, see an Advisor if needed, and register soon to have the best possible schedule. Classes are starting to fill up. There has been a misunderstanding by some students in the past that they must have the current term totally paid off to advance register. That is not the case. You will have to pay off your fall balance by December 1st to keep your winter classes.
University of Oregon Advising available this term! If you are planning to transfer to the U of O, there will be two academic advisors and a representative from Admissions and Financial Aid available on Wednesday, October 26th AND Wednesday, November 9th from 2:00-4:30 p.m. Please sign up at the Counseling department's reception desk if interested.
Oregon Institute of Technology outreach visit, Thursday, Oct. 27, 9-11 a.m., Building 16, Room 211. Faculty, staff, and students who have an interest in learning about the OIT Clinical Laboratory Science Program are welcome to attend this valuable question and answer session. The information provided will include OIT prerequisites, academic structure, internship sites, and application process.
PSU Visit. PSU's Extended Campus program offers fully online options to complete Bachelor degrees in social sciences and liberal studies. You can integrate minors in sociology, women's studies and civic leadership as well as certificates in early childhood education, youth worker issues, rural social services and volunteer leadership. Apply for admission any term. A PSU adviser visits Lane CC campus each term to provide individual advising to prospective and admitted students. For more information, please contact Amy Nelson Green, ph: 503-315-4281 or psusalem@pdx.edu. Visit us online: www.distancedegree.pdx.edu. Amy Nelson-Green will be scheduling appointments at LCC on Thursday, November 3. She has a few open slots. If you are interested, please contact Amy at the e-mail address or phone number listed above.
If you are starting to struggle in any way, please contact Kate or Bree as soon as possible so they can help you plan how to get back on track.
MRC Math handouts available in TLC. Math handouts explaining simple techniques, easy methods, and "how to . . ." for all levels of math are now available on the Information Table. If a math tutor is not available, you may find what you need in one of the folders. Take what you need, but please return any you don't want to keep to the correct folder so others can use them.
Study Group sessions are set for the term. Please look at the new TLC schedule (attached) to see when study groups are scheduled. The math tutor on duty leaves the TLC for an hour for each study group (except M105 on Tuesdays), so schedule your visits so that you can get the help you need.
Fragrance-Free Space. Fellow users of the TRiO Learning Center have expressed a need to learn in a fragrance-free space due to allergies and even illness and headaches caused by any one of the fragrances listed on the posted sign on top of microwave. Smoke residue on clothes and hair also causes allergies that affect students and staff, so please consider the effect fragrances of any nature have on students around you.
Career Training Opportunities Fair. The focus is on resources to support career training: training related scholarships, free training opportunities, and job search support and Career Exploration. Resources being marketed include: Bridge to CNA, and CNA free training, WIA scholarships, educational IDA (scholarships) from St Vincent DePaul, Bus development center, OPABS: PACE, Brighter Futures, On the Job Training opportunities, Job search support classes, prosperity center, CES and more. Keeping your Financial Aid.
There is a new Satisfactory Academic Policy that took effect July 1, 2011. To achieve Good Academic Standing, students are required to maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA and a 67% cumulative completion rate. The Financial Aid Office monitors students progress after each quarter. If a student is not meeting these requirements, he/she will be placed on Financial Aid Warning for the next quarter of enrollment. At the end of the warning quarter, if the student is still not meeting the requirements, his/her financial aid will be terminated. Make every effort to complete all your classes with a C or better to achieve good academic standing.
What can help you achieve good academic standing?
Attend every class unless you are really sick or you have an emergency.
Participate actively in class and outside of class by getting involved in campus services and resources.
Do your homework on time.
Good students use tutors. We have free tutoring services all over campus.
Form study groups or study with a friend.
Plan for two hours outside of class for every hour you are in class (three hours for Math, Science, Writing).
See an advisor or counselor if you are starting to struggle in a class.
SIGHTINGS" EXHIBIT LECTURE AND RECEPTION with Jefferson Goolsby. Thursday, Oct. 27, 3:30 p.m., Lane Art Gallery, Building 11, Room 119. Goolsby is an inter-media artist working in moving and still image, sound, performance, and interactive installation exploring themes of geographic and cultural displacement, globalization, and individual reckoning. His work has been presented throughout the United States and internationally including the Maine Center for Contemporary Arts Biennial; International Symposium on Electronic Arts 2008 (Singapore) and 2009 (Belfast); Jordan Schnizter Museum of Art; and the Portland International Experimental Film Festival. The show runs through Nov. 10. For more information call Art and Applied Design at 5409.

WEEK FOUR NEWS:
ADVANCE REGISTRATION for Winter term begins today, Tuesday, 10/18/11. Are you registered? If not, be sure to plan your classes, see an Advisor if needed, and register soon to have the best possible schedule. Student Registration Worksheets are at each computer station. Use them to plan your winter term courses. There has been a misunderstanding by some students in the past that they must have the current term totally paid off to advance register. That is not the case. You will have to pay off your fall balance by December 1st, 11:59 p.m. to keep your Advance Registration for Winter 2012.
Slots are already filling fast for Show me the Money Winter term class. TRiO students have two days to register for Show Me the Money prior to it opening up to the general student body. The CRNS for this Scholarship Learning Community are CG 105: Money for College-CRN 32449, Wednesday, 12:00 - 1:50 and WR 105: Writing for Scholarships - CRN 31372 Monday and Friday 1:00-1:50. The prerequisite is that you passed WR115 or tested into WR121. If you are in WR115 now or did your writing at another college you may have to go to the Language/Literature/Communication office on the 4th floor of the Center building to get released. Any questions or problems please contact us at 463-3131 or stop-in.
TRiO Keys to Success Workshop. This Thursday, October 20th, 2:30-4:00, 19/243. Everything you need to know to increase your success at Lane and beyond (okay, not everything), but lots of information to help you succeed. We expect all new TRiO students to attend. It's a great refresher for continuing students as well.
If you are thinking of dropping a class, please talk to Kate or Bree beforehand.
Student Registration Worksheets. They are posted by each computer with more in "The Bins" (backside of the stand on the check-in table, bottom row, right). Use this helpful form to fill out your schedule. It makes it easy to see if you have overlapped courses as you plan, and you can have all your information, CRNS, times, etc, in one place as you work and plan and when you are finished. Recommendation is to use pencil.
New TLC tutor Sam joins us this week. Sam has tutored all math through calculus at NWCU for several years. Sam can help you with all English and writing courses (essays, argument/persuasion, scholarships), and computers. He is proficient with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint). His science tutoring includes basic biology, chemistry, and physics. Sam's schedule isn't set yet, but for now he will be here Tuesdays from 3:00 to 5:00, and starting next week, also Wednesdays from 11:00 to 1:00 instead of Jake.
TLC Appointment Book. Includes instructions for signing up (in pencil, please), so this is a reminder of the need to contact us if you find you can't attend an appointment. Each TLC 30-minute tutoring appointment is valued time that can be used by another student if you don't use it. As you are already aware, the tutors are in high demand during their shifts. Per the TLC policies and procedures: If you cannot make your appointment, please call 463-3131 to cancel--even if you talk to the machine--or come in and erase your name. Students who miss three appointments during the term without canceling lose their right to further tutor appointments that term. We hesitate to cancel that privilege, so please log all future appointments in your weekly planner.
Study Groups. Study groups really work!!! Bravo for making this effort on behalf of your student success. Anyone can join one of the groups in the below. Note, there are two groups for Math 95, each group composed of its own three students; so, to be fair and maintain each group, you can join group one on Mondays or group two on Fridays, but not both. Study group sessions last 50-minutes, so you can get to your next class and your tutor can return to the TLC by the hour. Your tutor is pulled from tutoring in the TLC during the study group sessions, so it is vital that the tutor's time is not wasted. When you first meet, please mark your group's dates/times on your calendar. And, please, please, please don't schedule doctor, dentist, or other appointments during study group sessions. If you are ill and will not be on campus, please call the office (463-3131) or email me (cockrelln@lanecc.edu) that you cannot attend. Remember, attendance by at least three students is required each week to maintain your group. If attendance drops, the group will be canceled. If only one student shows up, the tutor and student will return to the TLC after a 10-minute wait.
Mondays Math 95-1 5/214 10:00-11:00
Mondays Math 111 16/217 2:00-3:00
Tuesdays Math 105 5/214 1:00-2:00
Wednesdays Math 65 CEN 214 1:00-2:00
Fridays Math 95-2 5/214 11:00-12:00
Handouts Wall. The wall above the printer now has several handouts to help with writing (essays, argument/persuasion, organization), note-taking, speech, keyboard shortcuts for MS Office, and more. Please take advantage of them but also return any you are not using or are don't need so other students can use them.
Printing PDF Documents from Moodle. When you open many of these documents, especially math, and want to print out the assignments or homework, note that when you move your curser to the bottom of the page, the print command is in a grey bar that appears at the bottom of the page and overlays the type or math problems on the page. Use that bar print command to print and not the computer's "file>print" method. Any tutor can help you.
MyMathLab should no longer be asking you to download the latest Adobe to get into your coursework. Please check with a tutor if you are not able to get to MyMathLab. Don't get behind. Tutors can help you get into the program to do your work.
TLC Food protocols include recycling. We are very busy in the TLC, and keeping it clean is important. We can't do that without your help. Always take your empty cans and bottles (glass and plastic) to the snack bar recycle bins when you finish, and please don't leave them on the tables. Please remove your dirty/empty dishes, and wipe up food and drink residue from your spot at the table and cover your food in the microwave so we don't have a nasty health hazard in there. Thanks for helping!
Workforce Workshops. The Workforce Development department on campus has many helpful workshops available to students and community members. To see : http://2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/wdd/workshopsseminars.html

-TLC Tutor Appointments: Proven Success Strategy!!!!! Make them and keep them. Take advantage of the three 30-minute uninterrupted appointments each week you are entitled to make with tutors in the TLC. If you are struggling with a course or finding your instructor is teaching in a style that isn't how you learn, tutor help makes all the difference. Appointments are especially helpful with math courses. You can catch up or stay on top, but you must come to be successful. Please contact us (463-3131) to erase your name if you can't make your appointment. Others often need the same time and would gladly take your unused appointment time, but they can't if you just don't show. If you miss three (3) appointments during the term without canceling, you lose your right to schedule further tutor appointments that term. We alert you with a note on your card when you miss an appointment so that this won't ever happen to you.
-Study Groups: Math 65, 95, and 111 have groups. If you signed up for one of these groups, please check you emails in the next couple of days for the day and time information. Your confirmation is needed so we can book a room. It takes time for Marla to find rooms; rooms are scarce, so meet in the TLC until we confirm a room for your study group. Study Groups require a minimum of three students in attendance each week, so it is a commitment, but has proven to be directly related to student success. With tutor hours reduced this year, it is important that you attend your groups as that tutor is pulled from the TLC for your study group time. Math 60 study group - no match yet, needs more availabilities and/or more students Math 65 - Wednesdays 1:00 to 2:00 Math 95 Group 1 - Mondays 10:00 to 10:50 Math 95 Group 2 - Fridays 11:00 to 11:50 Math 111 - Mondays 2:00 to 2:50 Math 105 - Tuesdays 1: to 2:00
-Tutor Assistance: Please be patient as there are only two tutors at any one time, and only one tutor when a study group is in session or during appointments. If you can join one of the study groups above, please do, and that will give you some extra tutor time with others who are in the same course with the same homework and quizzes. Tutors can't always get to you before you may need to go to class, but they always do their best to help. Help us be more efficient by being ready for your appointment. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO GO GET YOUR TUTOR WHEN IT IS TIME FOR YOUR APPOINTMENT. Remember, tutors are never to work your problems for you but to show you how through examples, through teaching you to use your text books, and providing different approaches to help you understand.
-New Software in the TLC: You have all noticed that we now have MS Office 2010 on the computers, but we also have programs to assist students with aural and visual needs. You may use these computers at any time like any others in the TLC, but please know that priority will be given to those who need to use these programs when they are here. If you are using one of the following computers and a student requiring that program comes in, you may be asked to move to another computer. Computer #2 has Co:Writer. Computer # 9 has NaturalReader.. Computer # 10 has JAWS and DragonSpeak.
-MyMathLab: Use Internet Explorer and not Mozilla. The programs require an Adobe download that we don't have yet. IT (tech help desk) is backed up and has asked that you go ahead and download the Adobe the site requests until they can do it themselves on a permanent basis. Tutors can help you do this if you aren't sure how, but it gives you simple 4-step directions. The program will have to be downloaded each time you work, but it only takes seconds.
-Protect your privacy: Logging off a computer requires you to return to the log-in screen. If you don't, you leave your work and personal information exposed.
-Recycle: Please take all cans and glass and plastic bottles down the hall to the recycle bins as you leave. Do not put in the trash or our paper recycle bin.
-Printing Help: Tutors will help you print PowerPoint, PDFs, Emails from instructors and large articles. Please ask for help so you are not printing off more than is necessary and can learn to condense the work into printable format.
-Limited TLC Seating: Please make room for others by taking up only one seating area at a time, either at the computer or a table, but not both. We are very crowded, especially in the mornings, so please tuck your gear under the computer desks or tables, hang your coats on the rack or on your chair (not an empty one), so that others can see there is room for them to work in the TLC.
-Food Table: Please clean up after you eat and vacate the table so others can eat there during the prime lunch times of 11:00 to 1:00. Thanks!
-David Joyce Gallery Artists' Reception. Celebrate the first exhibit of the season, "Yellow, Yellow the Color of Bright," a study in color theory featuring five Oregon photographers and their imagery of foods, the land and welcoming environments.
Thursday, October 13, 5-6:30 p.m., second floor Center for Meeting and Learning. -Community College Moment Reading and Reception at Tsunami Books. Lane's faculty and staff journal, the Community College Moment, is hosting this wine and cheese reception and reading by contributors to this year's issue. Everyone's invited. Thursday, October 13th, reception from 6:30-7 p.m.; reading begins at 7 p.m.

-Returning TRiO Students: Have you done your Fall Check-in appointment? If not, you must do it to get your card for the TLC, plus you'll get a nice planner so you can stay organized in 2011-12.
-TLC Schedule is still in flux. We won't have a set term schedule until week two or three. Returning tutors for week 1 are Aletheia, Jake, James, and Nancy. STEM tutor Mac has joined us this year with math and chemistry skills. Other tutors may yet return or new ones may join us. That is what we are working on the first two weeks. The current schedule is posted in the TLC and attached to this email.
-TLC Computer Update: TLC computers are now Windows 7 operating systems with MS Office 2010. Tutors will help you navigate the new system if you need help. It does look different, but is more functional. TLC Printer: Please bear with as this week the printer is not on the same page as the new computers and we cannot print on both sides. Instructional Technology will send someone to re-image them to work as they did before. Tutors can help you print.
