Weekly E-News Archive - Fall 2010 - E-News Update

December 2, 2010

We hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and had some fun over the long weekend as well as got caught up on some end-of term work. Here it is, the last week of classes before finals! Can you believe it?   News for Week 10!!!

IMPORTANT!! CHECK YOUR FALL ACCOUNT BALANCE IN MYLANE! Fall balances must be paid by 11:59 on Thursday, December 2, or you will lose your Winter term Advance Registered classes. Check and pay your Fall term balance.   DECEMBER TRiO WORKSHOPS:

Scholarship Workshop, Wednesday, December 15th, 10:00-11:30, Bldg. 1/224.  Helpful tips to fund your education through scholarships! Get started on the OSAC application over Winter Break.

KEYS to SUCCESS Workshop, Tuesday, December 14th, 1:00 - 2:30, 19/241.  All new TRiO students who did not attend this workshop before fall term began, please plan on coming to this workshop. If you struggled at all during fall term, please plan to come to this workshop. You'll leave with a personalized success plan!

Interested in a Tour of OSU in Winter term?  Please sign up on the interest sheet in TLC.  If we have at least 6 students interested and willing to commit a day to it on Friday, January 21, we will schedule a visit.

OSAC eApp Update: The 2011-2012 eApp is currently available online at www.GetCollegeFunds.org. Start your Activities Chart and four required Personal Statements early. The eApp is saved until you are ready to submit.

TLC Finals Week Schedule is posted in the TLC and attached.  Note that tutors and hours are different from the past weeks.

PowerPoint Printing Tip: Please ask a tutor to help you print before you try on your own. PowerPoint printing can be one of the most wasteful of all print jobs, but tutors can show you how to be economical and efficient when you print out your projects.

Last week for appointments is week 10. No appointments during finals week, so sign up now. Please remember to keep your appointments. If you don't have an appointment, use the drop in board, but also check with tutors in case someone doesn't show, and you can use that appointment slot.

Save your work. The NetStorage (My Documents on Lane Computers) will be purged during the break. Any work you have saved under your L# or in My Documents/Student Documents at Lane will be gone forever if you don't save it to a disk or flash drive or email it to yourself. Most of the time no one minds the purge, but we do want to warn you in case you have saved something as vital as a resume in there.   Library Voices, please. As the term comes to a close and there is tension, excitement, and holiday wishes, there is also a real need to get ready for finals. Please remember to keep your voices low and avoid talking across the room to each other. Keep those cell phones turned off or on vibrate. Phone conversations must wait until you are out the door. Students can truly have a learning moment interrupted by phones going off, constant whispering, laughter, and boisterous talk. Focus folks! You'll be glad you did.

WEEKLY TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOPS FOR STUDENTS

Scholarship Workshop, Wednesday, December 15th, 10:00-11:30, Bldg. 1/224  Helpful tips to fund your education through scholarships!

Let us know how we can help you! Don't hesitate to ask for support. That is what we are here for!

Math Test Tip for Math 10 through Math 60: A good study aide is to write a test from your homework problems, about 10 to 15 problems to do in 50 minutes. Then put the book away and do the problems as if it were a test: quiet, 50 minute limit, no calculator, no book. Keep doing this until you have success. Students who have tried this have said it helped them build confidence. It does take some time, but it's worth it.

Test Tip for Math 65 and Beyond: Same process, but it's okay to use a calculator.

Taking a self-paced math course? TRiO tutors are here and ready to serve your needs. Self-paced math courses leave you pretty much on your own. So, use your time wisely and make appointments (you get 3 per week) and use the all day drop-in tutoring available in the TLC. The TRiO tutors can explain the tough stuff and keep you on course. There are several tutors to choose from, so try them out and choose your favorite or use them all, but use them, that's the key to success.

Card Reminders: Sign in on your card each visit to the TLC, even if for just a moment. Don't tally--that is for the tutors--just fill in the date (month/day) and your arrival and exit times to the nearest five minutes. Always leave your card in the "return stand." It's okay to take your card from the clipped group of cards in the "return" stand, just don't reclip it when you are done; it needs to be retallied, so just drop it back in the "return" stand.

Automatic Door Issue: Door isn't working. The manufacturer will come fix it soon. Please don't hang purses, coats, or anything over the control button. Any weight against the button causes it to reset and turn itself off. Not good.

Supplies in the TLC: If you don't see it, ask the tutors as we have everything somewhere in here. Mostly visible once you know where to look. Paper clips and rulers hang out in the desk drawer of the check-in table. Some supplies are in Nancy's desk, and a tutor can get them for you: oversized index cards, eraser tips, pencils (loans only), and staples.
Scissors, colored pencils, erasers, white-out, tape, hole punchers, staple removers, and the stapler are on the Information and Supply table. So is a calendar, the big dictionary, tissues, and the schedule. Scratch paper is on each table.

Appointments:
Please read the directions for making appointments attached to the top of the book. Attend your appointments on time. Notify your tutor a couple of minutes early so the tutor can finish up with a task or drop-in tutor help and be ready for you. It is important that you cancel appointments you won't be attending. Call us at 463-3131 if you are sick and will not make the appointment. Erase our name if you are here and plan not to use the appointment. There is usually another student ready to take that spot.

PEACE CENTER EVENTS COMMITTEE SEEKS NEW MEMBERS
The Lane Peace Center Events Committee organizes peace and justice related events for the Lane Community College campus and the Eugene community. Our major project each year is the Lane Peace Symposium featuring renowned keynote speakers and music. This year's symposium is scheduled for April 15, 2011. The committee meets the first and third Tuesdays of the month from 3-4:30 p.m. This is a working committee requiring a minimum commitment of 3-4 hours per month, with additional time commitments in the month leading up to the Peace Symposium. While all are encouraged to join, specific skills in graphic arts, fund raising, social networking skills, working with media, web skills, and event organizing are needed. The committee seeks members from student groups oriented toward ending war and promoting social, racial, gender and environmental justice. If you are interested in joining the committee, contact Stan Taylor at taylors@lanecc.edu or 5820. For more information, go to: lanecc.edu/peacecenter

STUDENTS JOIN THE I CAN, ONE CAN FOOD DRIVE

Students will be collecting food through December. Our goal is to collect 500 pounds of food. Food for Lane County's food supply continues to decline. With only a four week supply of food in their warehouse. The need is even greater this time of year as they try to supply food for the holiday food box distribution. Collection barrels will be available in the gym, cafeteria, building 1, Cooperative Education office (Building 19, room 231). Tell your friends. Donate one or more cans of non-perishable food each month to Lane's ongoing food drive.

Campus Closed on Thursday, 11/11. Thank you to all our Veterans for the service you have provided! Enjoy your day off on Thursday to get caught up on some work.

Evaluations for tutors are coming in, but please continue to evaluate tutors who help you. One per tutor, please, and remember to use the 10-point scale for the box at the top. Please get them in by the end of this week.

New TLC card colors and order: Welcome to all the new students this term. Several new students completed their orientation Friday; they have purple cards. Being the newest students, their cards will be filed in front of the peach cards belonging to students who entered at the beginning of the term. Behind those cards are the maize yellow cards of the returning students from previous years. Remember to sign in and out and leave your card in the stand up "return" file each time you visit the TLC.

TLC Cell phones etiquette. Your cell phones need to be turned off before entering the TLC. All to many are going off lately, which is most distracting to students working away.  Please remember to turn yours off or on vibrate, and if you do take a call, to put the caller on hold until you have exited the TLC. No phone use in the TLC, please, at any time.

Please Recycle: Big blue recycle bins are down the hall. Please take your glass and plastic bottles and your cans down to these when you leave the TLC. Recycle paper in the blue recycle basket in the front corner by the door.

Moodle Tip: MS Word codes don't convert to Moodle. So, save your document as a file type "rich text format (*.rtf)/notepad/wordpad/MS Works. Don't use italics or bolding or underlining from Word. Do all  your formating using the Moodle codes found by clicking on the little yellow keyboard icon on any page that requires you to write or copy into a text box. If confused, ask a tutor for help.   Open Office: It's a free system similar to MS Word, but it is "glitchy." If you have Open Office on your personal computer, save any documents you create as "rich text format" (*.rtf).

Student Computer Support/Student Help Desk: 463-3333, or if on a Lane phone, simply dial extension 3333. The student Help Desk is under the stairs in the library.

You are registered for Winter term, right?

Midterm Madness: Are you behind in math or with writing assignments for any course? It's midterm, and from here on the work gets harder. You need to be caught up and soon. Check in with tutors, make appointments, get caught up then stay ahead! Work with tutors to get you over humps and clear up confusion. TLC's automatic door: Once the button is pushed the door automatically opens and remains open for several seconds before closing on its own. Please don't try to force the door to close before it is ready; it can break the mechanism. Also, as the hall and lobby generate a lot of noise at times, which really disturbs students in the TLC if the door is kept open. Please be considerate and not use the button if the hall is loaded with students or the noise outside is high.

Fight the spread of germs in the TLC: Cough and sneeze into your elbow or use tissues. If you use tissues, follow up with hand sanitizer. Coughing hard? Sneezing often? Free face masks are available in the health clinic, Bldg 18/101. Last year we initiated a sanitizing protocol for the computers, and it really helped: Almost no colds and flu in the TLC. The keyboards and mice are sanitized each morning. Students help by sanitizing their hands before sitting down at computers and again when they are done. If you are sick and using a computer, let us know so we can sanitize the keyboard and mouse again. Read the poster on the glass of the door leading into the office for more information about fighting germs during the flu and cold season.

Remember to log off all the way. Many of you are still are not logging off. You must take it back to the log in screen before you walk away. If you don't, you leave access to your personal information and work.

TLC Schedule Change: Lynn's, Aletheia's, and Nancy's schedules change starting Monday and Tuesday 11/1 and 11/2 . There has been a misunderstanding by some students in the past that they must have the current term totally paid off to advance register. That is not the case. You will have to pay off your fall balance by December 2nd to keep your Advance Registration for Winter 2011.

TRiO students have two days to register for Show Me the Money prior to it opening up to the general student body. The CRNS for this Scholarship Learning Community are CG 105: Money for College-32487  Wed 12 - 1:50 and WR 105: Writing for Scholarships - 31383  Mon and Fri 12:00-12:50.

PLANNING TO TRANSFER TO THE UNIVERSITY OF OREGON NEXT YEAR? An advisor from UO will be available October 21 and November 4 from 1:00 - 5:00 in the Counseling Department (sign up there in advance). If you are planning to transfer Winter term, you are required to do an Orientation and they have one scheduled for November 19th. Pick up flyer in TRiO Office.

Mid-term Progress Reports--Be sure to pick up the forms from the front desk in the office, or at the check-in desk in the TLC. Distribute them to your instructors and ask them to complete them in the next few days. Please contact us when the cards are returned to you if you have any concerns about how you are doing in a class. There is time now to improve your performance! If you are thinking of dropping a class, talk to Kate or Bree beforehand.

Appointments: Don't forget you are entitled to three appointments each week. See the instructions attached to the appointment book. Ask a tutor if you have questions.  Drop In tutoring: Good all day every day. Use it as much as you like. Just write your name, subject, and the time on the drop in board. Appointments (30-minutes uninterrupted time) require you to sign up in the book in the yellow colored areas only. You can have three per week.   Study groups are in full swing. The information is on the board for each group. Be sure to write the information in your weekly planners so you don't forget to attend the weekly sessions.

Remember to log off computers. Log off is only complete when you see the log-in screen reappear. Never leave the monitor with a pretty scene, as that means you are still logged on. If the computer balks, tell a tutor, who can complete the task for you.   Late Nights in TRiO: The TLC is open until 5:30 on both Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Aletheia and Lynn on Mondays and Aletheia and Liz on Wednesdays. Check the Tutor schedule to see the many subjects and skills of these tutors.   RECYCLE, Please! We need you to help with the recycling on campus. Do not throw your cans and plastic or glass bottles in the trash in the TLC, but take them down the hall to the blue bins. You walk right past them as they are in the main hall by the food kiosk and the veterans office. That helps tremendously and Lane recycles tons of waste each year, but we need your help to make it work. Technology Workshops: Have some questions? Get them answered!

10/12/10
Here we are in Week three already! This term is going to pass very quickly, so be sure you are caught up in your classes, and know what needs to be done in the coming weeks. If you can be ahead of the game, you will prepared if you do get sick and have to miss a class.   News for Week Three:

  1. Advance Registration for Winter begins Tuesday, 10/19/10. Be sure you are released, plan your schedule with appropriate courses, see Kate, Bree or your major advisor/counselor to ensure you are registering for the right courses. The sooner you register, the more likely you are to get the courses and schedule that you want.
  2. PLEASE--if you have NOT yet done your fall check-in appointment, CALL NOW--463-3131--to schedule it. Once you schedule it, please show for it.
  3. Interested in Show Me the Money (the Scholarship Learning Community)? http://2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/lc/ShowMeTheMoney.html  Be sure to sign up on the interest list in the TRiO Office. We will be releasing students to register for that Learning Community if you have met the prerequisites (passed WR 115 or tested into WR121). You will do better in the class if you have taken a Writing course, and if you know what your major is. Even though we need to release you to add Show Me the Money, you also have to have been released for Advance Registration for Winter. TRiO students will be able to register for this Learning Community (CRN 32487 - CG 105 - Th 12:00 -1:50  and CRN 31383 WR105 Tues and Fri 12:00 - 12:50) for the first two days of Advance Registration (10/19 - 10/20) before it is opened up to the general Lane student body. If you want to participate in this Learning Community, sign up early!
  4. Hurray for TLC Users: Over 900 hours used in the first two weeks. Good for you. First two students to use up one complete side of their cards are Trina followed by her daughter Jordan. We encourage you to use the TLC whenever possible; it's a proven success strategy, especially when you use tutors and appointments and join study groups.
  5. Protect your privacy: Logging off a computer requires you to return to the log-in screen. If you don't, you leave your work and personal information exposed.
  6. Recycle:  Please take all cans and glass and plastic bottles down the hall to the recycle bins as you leave. Do not put in the trash or our paper recycle bin.
  7. Study Groups begin this week: Math 20 with Aletheia, Mondays from 1:00 to 1:50 in Bldg 1/222 (down the hall). BT 272 with Liz, Wednesdays from 9:00 to 9:45 in Bldg 19/249C Math 65 with Mike, Wednesdays from 9:00 to 9:45 in Tutor Central, Room 209, this week. Math 60 is in process. Check your emails if you are signed up for this study group.
  8. TLC Tutor Appointments: Proven Success Strategy!!!!! Make them and keep them.Take advantage of the three 30-minute uninterrupted appointments each week you are entitled to make with tutors in the TLC. If you are struggling with a course or finding your instructor is teaching in a style that isn't how you learn, tutor help makes all the difference. Appointments are especially helpful with math courses. You can catch up or stay on top, but you must come to be successful. Please contact us (463-3131) to erase your name if you can't make your appointment. Others often need the same time and would gladly take your unused appointment time, but they can't if you just don't show. If you miss three (3) appointments during the term without canceling, you lose your right to schedule further tutor appointments that term. We alert you with a note on your card when you miss an appointment so that this won't ever happen to you.
  9. Printing Help: Tutors will help you print PowerPoint, PDFs, Emails from instructors and large articles. Please ask for help so you are not printing off more than is necessary and can learn to condense the work into printable format.
  10. Are you using TRiO on a regular basis? Do you have any questions or confusion that you need to consult with us about? Are you starting to struggle in any classes? Now would be the right time to come in and develop strategies to be successful.
  11. Thinking about transferring to the University of Oregon?  Any student planning on transferring should see an advisor form the University. Sign up in the Lane Counseling Department (Building 1, first floor) to meet with a UO Advisor at Lane from 8:30 - 4:00 on the following dates:
    • October 21, 2010
    • November 4, 2010
    • January 27, 2011
    • February 3, 2011
    • April 21, 2011
    • April 28, 2011
  12. Lane Dance Concert:  Bonnie Simoa, recently back from her sabbatical in Bali, will dance the traditional Balinese   Dance: Legong Kraton Playon in the Blue Door Theater at Lane Community College October 16 at 7:30 PM.  Slideshow and post performance Q & A. Tickets: $5 students, seniors and Lane Staff $10 general admission. Seating in
the Blue Door Theater is limited to 85.  Tickets are available on-line.  This one-night-only performance is a unique opportunity to experience this beautiful traditional dance.  Due to its intricacy and complexity, this version of the Legong is rarely performed today even in Bali, let
    alone Eugene Oregon.

10/5/10
We hope you had a great first week of classes and are settled in to a good schedule for getting quality work done and taking good care of yourselves. Be sure to eat well, sleep enough, and wash your hands often!

News for the week:

Schedules should be set now. Whatever you are enrolled in today is the number of credits you will be funded for through Financial Aid (if you are receiving Financial Aid). Be sure you talk to us before you make any further changes in your schedule this term, or if you begin to struggle in any of your classes. We will help you plan what to do to ensure you stay in good standing with Financial Aid.

Advance Registration begins October 19. Are you released to register for Winter term Advance Registration? If you are unsure, check your status on myLane. Go to myEnrollment, Student Status, Check Advance Registration Status. If you are not released for Winter Term enrollment, it's important to see your Advisor or Counselor to do good academic planning so you are well prepared to Advance Register for upcoming terms. See them soon to be able to register on October 19.

Moodle Workshop-Wednesday, 10/6/10, 11:00 - 11:40 in the Computer Lab, Second Floor, Library. Not sure how to use Moodle? Attend this workshop.

Pick up your current term sticker for your bus pass beginning October 5 at the Titan Store. You must have your LCC Bus Pass and student identification "L" number when you get a sticker. Stickers must be attached before October 9 to ride the bus. You will not be able to get a sticker for another person. Keep your bus pass and get new stickers each term.

Need tutoring help in the TLC? Three ways:

~The most common is drop-in tutoring. Don't forget you need to sign up (first name only) on the  "Drop-In" board when you need help. Put the subject and level next to your name and the time you are actually standing at the board. That way we serve all students fairly.

~You can sign up for three 30-minute appointments each week with various tutors. See the appointment binder on the Information desk. Please don't take all one tutor's slots in one day or one week and remember to cancel in person or by phone if you are not able to make the appointment.

~Create a study group by signing up on the blue clipboard with ALL your available times. Study groups are a great success strategy for math and science courses. When at least three people sign up and have times that match, we will put a study group together for you. 50 minutes with a TRiO tutor in a separate room.

Study Groups: Sign up on the blue clip board on the Information and Supplies Table or ask for tutor assistance. The following groups must have three or more students who can meet and confirmation with those who signed up is in process. Please add your name and time for the Math 60, Math 65 and Math 95 groups to be sure they go this term. Study groups are a great way to learn the material.

BT 272  - meets Wednesdays, 9:00 - 9:50, with Liz,  starting 10/13 in a room to be announced.

Math 20 - meets Mondays, 1:00 to 1:50, with Aletheia starting 10/11 in a room to be announced.

Math 60 - please revise your availabilities if at all possible so we can find a 50-minute block

Math 65 - please revise your availabilities if at all possible so we can find a 50-minute block

Math 95 - confirmation in process for 11:00 to 11:50 on Tuesdays

Browser Tip: First of all, we have the latest version of Adobe for opening programs attached to your texts and courses. For your work on the Web, you will likely have better success with Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer is more forms and program friendly for connecting to text Web sites. You will have the choice to use Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox browsers to connect you to the Web. When you open you connect to the Web using these browsers, you will notice that they don't necessarily look the same. They don't work the same either. IT recommends should you have an issue with one, just try using the other browser.

Help keep germs down in the TLC. It takes the efforts of all of us to stay healthy. The college expectations are that we will use hand sanitizers before and after using the computers and whenever we blow our noses, wash our hands for at least 20 seconds when at the sink, and stay home for 24 hours when sick. Please help keep the TLC germ level down in the TLC by using the sanitizers placed around the room and by coughing into your elbows. If you use tissues (once and toss, please) then sanitize your hands afterward.  The monitors and keyboards are wiped with a sanitizing cloth daily.

Card Clues: Remember signing in and out each visit is important for our funding, and that helps you! First, get your card from the box and sign in with the date and time: Pink cards are new students and are filed right behind the letter of your last name. Returning TRiO student cards are yellow this term and are placed behind the pink cards in the box.  If you pull out all the cards, please be sure to put them back under the same letter with pink cards for new students in front of the yellow cards for returning students. That way you only have to look through your color. If you don't see your card, read the green sign attached to the card box for where to look for it, as  your card is likely being processed. Always sign out and return your card to the "Return Cards Here" tally stand to be tallied by tutors. If you were in earlier and return to find your card clipped with others in the tally stand, pull it out and sign in anew. When leaving, return it to the stand, but notreturn it to the clipped group of cards.

PRINTER CLUES. The printer is networked to all the computers in the TLC. Please be careful to take only your own pages from the printer and take your unused printed pages to the recycle by the hall door. Wait till printer is finished printing to take your work. You don't want to disorder someone's print job still in process. It is most important that you don't pull the copies out. The machine goes through the double-sided print action even if you are only printing one page. Let it finish and then take your page from the slot.

Food/Recycle Update. Take advantage of the microwave and fridge, and please remember to label your fridge food. Expectations are that you bring only what you will eat that day, clean up any mess you make, and recycle your plastics, bottles, and cans down the hall in the proper bins. Sorry, there's no room to store lunch boxes in the TLC. Cafeteria trays, plates or utensils are not to be brought into the TLC. Recycle all clean paper products in the blue recycle box in the corner by the sign up sheets.

TLC Supplies. Please don't disturb office staff, but check with tutors for anything you need. The tall table in the middle of the room has many often used supplies, but if you don't see what you need, like index cards, just ask a tutor, who will get them from our supply drawer. Paper clips are in the shallow drawer of the check-in/out desk. Lots of scratch paper in the bins on the tables for you. Ear muffs for silence are available from a tutor. You can check out math texts and calculators to use in the TLC. A tutor must check these out to you and you need to return them to a tutor, as we require your Lane I.D. card and a sign out log. Please never go behind the desk to get the texts yourself. This is to protect you if the texts disappear for any reason. Neither texts nor calculators are to leave the TLC.

Lane Dance Concert-Bonnie Simoa, recently back from her sabbatical in Bali, will dance the traditional Balinese Dance: Legong Kraton Playon in the Blue Door Theater at Lane Community College October 16 at 7:30 PM. Slideshow and post performance Q & A. Tickets: $5 students, seniors and Lane Faculty Staff,  $10 general admission. Seating in the Blue Door Theater is limited to 85.  This one-night-only performance is a unique opportunity to experience this beautiful traditional dance.  In Bali dance serves to satisfy the gods, and bring health and prosperity to the community. No temple celebration would be complete without dance.  Bonnie studied with her guru Sang Ayu Ketut Muklen, a revered “Maestro” from the village of Pejeng, who is one of the last surviving Legong teachers of her generation. At 83, she teaches the “old style” Legong which is becoming increasingly rare.  Due to its intricacy and complexity, this version of the Legong is rarely performed today even in Bali, let alone Eugene Oregon.

It was great to see so many of you at the TRiO Open House last week. Please keep coming in even when we don't have food and prizes. The reward will be better grades! Congratulations to Jordan Kenawa who won the IMac! Have a great second week.
