October 5, 2009
Dear TRiO Students:   We hope you had a great first week of classes and are settled in to a good schedule for getting quality work done and taking good care of yourselves. Be sure to eat well, sleep enough, and wash your hands often!   News for the week:   Schedules should be set now. Whatever you are enrolled in today is the number of credits you will be funded for through Financial Aid (if you are receiving Financial Aid). Be sure you talk to us before you make any further changes in your schedule this term, or if you begin to struggle in any of your classes. We will help you plan what to do to ensure you stay in good standing with Financial Aid.

-DEGREE OPTIONS WORKSHOP, Friday, 10/9/09, 2:00 - 3:00, 1/222 - Associate's? Bachelor's? Master's? What are these degrees? Where will they get me? Why spend money and time to go to school longer? This workshop will help you figure out where you want to go and how you are going to get there! Sign up in the TLC. See the attached workshop schedule for other events and workshops. PLEASE be SURE to SHOW UP when you sign up!

-Lane Performing Arts Play - Arsenic and Old Lace - Sunday, October 11 matinee, 2:00 at Lane Performing Arts Center. Sign up by Wednesday in the TLC. We will purchase tickets after you confirm your attendance. Once we purchase your ticket, we expect you to be there.

-Pick up your current term sticker for your bus pass beginning tomorrow at the Titan Store. You must have your LCC Bus Pass and student identification "L" number when you get a sticker. Stickers must be attached before October 10 to ride the bus. You will not be able to get a sticker for another person. Keep your bus pass and get new stickers each term.

-Fall Scholarship Workshops offered through CES. See attached flyer. If you are planning on transferring to the UO next year, be sure to attend the workshop on November 18th to learn about UO Scholarships.

-Need tutoring help in the TLC? Three ways: ~The most common is drop-in tutoring. Don't forget you need to sign up (first name only) on the  "Drop-In" board when you need help. Put the subject and level next to your name and the time you are actually standing at the board. That way we serve all students fairly. ~You can sign up for three 30-minute appointments each week with various tutors. See the appointment binder on the Information desk. Please don't take all one tutor's slots in one day or one week and remember to cancel in person or by phone if you are not able to make the appointment. ~Create a study group by signing up on the blue clipboard with ALL your available times. Study groups are a great success strategy for math and science courses. When at least three people sign up and have times that match, we will put a study group together for you. 50 minutes with a TRiO tutor in a separate room.      Browser Tip: First of all, we have the latest version of Adobe for opening programs attached to your texts and courses. For your work on the Web, you will likely have better success with Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer is more forms and program friendly for connecting to text Web sites. You will have the choice to use Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox browsers to connect you to the Web. When you open you connect to the Web using these browsers, you will notice that they don't necessarily look the same. They don't work the same either. IT recommends should you have an issue with one, just try using the other browser.   Help keep germs down in the TLC. It takes the efforts of all of us to stay healthy. The college expectations are that we will use hand sanitizers before and after using the computers and whenever we blow our noses, wash our hands for at least 20 seconds when at the sink, and stay home for 24 hours when sick. Please help keep the TLC germ level down in the TLC by using the sanitizers placed around the room and by coughing into your elbows. If you use tissues (once and toss, please) then sanitize your hands afterward.  The monitors and keyboards are wiped with a sanitizing cloth daily.   Card Clues: Remember signing in and out each visit is important for our funding, and that helps you! First, get your card from the box and sign in with the date and time. If you were yellow last year, you are blue this year.  If you pull out all the cards, be sure to put them back under the same letter with yellow cards for new students in front of the blue cards for returning students. That way you only have to look through your color. If you don't see your card, read the green sign attached to the card box for where to look for it, as  your card is being processed. Always sign out and return your card to the "Return Cards Here" tally stand to be tallied. If you were in earlier and return to find your card clipped with others in the tally stand, pull it out and sign in anew. When leaving, return it to the stand, but never return it to a clipped group of cards.   PRINTER CLUES. The printer is networked to all the computers in the TLC. Please be careful to take only your own pages from the printer and take your unused printed pages to the recycle by the hall door. Wait till printer is finished printing to take your work. You don't want to disorder someone's print job still in process. It is most important that you don't pull the copies out. The machine goes through the double-sided print action even if you are only printing one page. Let it finish and then take your page from the slot.   Food/Recycle Update. Take advantage of the microwave and fridge, and please remember to label your fridge food. Expectations are that you bring only what you will eat that day, clean up any mess you make, and recycle your plastics, bottles, and cans down the hall in the proper bins. Sorry, there's no room to store lunch boxes in the TLC. Cafeteria trays, plates or utensils are not to be brought into the TLC. Recycle all clean paper products in the blue recycle box in the corner by the sign up sheets.   TLC Supplies. Please don't disturb office staff, but check with tutors for anything you need. The tall table in the middle of the room has many often used supplies, but if you don't see what you need, like index cards, just ask a tutor, who will get them from our supply drawer. Paper clips are in the shallow drawer of the check-in/out desk. Lots of scratch paper in the bins on the tables for you. Ear muffs for silence are available from a tutor. You can check out math texts and calculators to use in the TLC. A tutor must check these out to you and you need to return them to a tutor, as we require your Lane I.D. card and a sign out log. Please never go behind the desk to get the texts yourself. This is to protect you if the texts disappear for any reason. Neither texts nor calculators are to leave the TLC.

It was great to see so many of you at the TRiO Open House last week. Please keep coming in even when we don't have food and prizes. The reward will be better grades! Have a great second week.

October 12, 2009
Dear TRiO Students:   Here we are in Week three already! This term is going to pass very quickly, so be sure you are caught up in your classes, and know what needs to be done in the coming weeks. If you can be ahead of the game, you will prepared if you do get sick and have to miss a class.   News for Week Three:

  1. Advance Advising begins tomorrow, Tuesday, 10/13/2009. If you were new in Fall you must see your advisor or counselor to be released for early registration. If you have already been released (check your status on ExpressLane) you may still want to talk to an Advisor or Counselor about what classes would be best to take. Be sure to take any records with you to your session.
  2. Advance Registration for Winter begins Tuesday, 10/20/09. Be sure you are released, plan your schedule with appropriate courses, see Kate, Bree or your major advisor/counselor to ensure you are registering for the right courses. The sooner you register, the more likely you are to get the courses and schedule that you want.
  3. PLEASE--if you have NOT yet done your fall check-in appointment, CALL NOW--463-3131--to schedule it. Once you schedule it, please show for it.
  4. Interested in Show Me the Money (the Scholarship Learning Community)? http://2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu/lc/ShowMeTheMoney.html  Be sure to sign up on the interest list in the TLC, or let Marla know. We will be releasing students to register for that Learning Community if you have met the prerequisites (passed WR 115 or tested into WR121). You will do better in the class if you have taken a Writing course, and if you know what your major is. Even though we need to release you to add Show Me the Money, you also have to have been released for Advance Registration for Winter. TRiO students will be able to register for this Learning Community (CRN 31916  CG 105 TR 1-150  and
CRN 31562 WR105 TR 3:00-3:50) for the first two days of Advance Registration (10/20-21) before it is opened up to the general Lane student body. If you want to participate in this Learning Community, sign up early!
  5. Printing Guidelines in the TLC: The printer has had several blocked printings of 20 to 50+ pages, which are over the limit here. I know some of you are trying to print out your chapters or large sections of text from your Moodle courses and this doesn't work. Please ask a tutor for help.
  6. TLC Tutor Appointments: Proven Success Strategy!!!!! Make them and keep them.Take advantage of the three 30-minute uninterrupted appointments each week you are entitled to make with tutors in the TLC. If you are struggling with a course or finding your instructor is teaching in a style that isn't how you learn, tutor help makes all the difference. Appointments are especially helpful with math courses. You can catch up or stay on top, but you must come to be successful. Several appointments were made last week and missed. You need to contact us (463-3131) or erase your name if you can't make your appointment. Others often need the same time and would gladly take your unused appointment time, but they can't if you just don't show. We won't count last week, but starting this week, we will adhere to your TRiO contract which reads "if you miss three (3) appointments during the term without canceling, you lose your right to schedule further tutor appointments that term." We alert you with a note on your card when you miss an appointment so that this won't ever happen to you.
  7. MathXL students: Each new text comes with a MathXL Student Access Kit with a personal access code for the student purchaser. If you purchased a used book without the Access Kit, you need to purchase the kit separately to be able to connect to the problems via the Internet. Ask your instructors if they are requiring you to have the Access Kit. You can purchase the access code from the MathXL website:   < http://www.mathxl.com/login_mml.htm  >  You will need to register and for that you need the four-section four-digit course code from your instructor. This site has all that the disk in the book has and more and you can access the Web to log on and register from any lab on campus. When in the TLC, log into the website.
  8. Study Groups for math and science. Sign up if you are interested in being in a math or science study group. If a minimum of three TRiO students sign up with a matching 50-minute block (just like a class), we can start a study group for you. Study groups are a proven success strategy and students usually keep forming them term after term as they progress through the courses. Study groups are student generated, so fill out all your available times on the blue sign up clipboard on the Information Table (the tall one). Any tutor can help you.
Current Groups:
  • BT 226 with Liz from 3:00 to 3:50 meets Thursdays in 1/212 by restroom except 10/22 in 19/231J
  • BA 172 with Liz from 3:00 to 3:50 meets Tuesdays in 19/231J in Coop except 1/212 on 11/3 and 12/1)
Forming Groups:
  • Math 60 needs one more who can meet 9:30 to 10:20 on either Tuesdays or Thursdays.
  • Math 65 needs one more who can meet 9:00 to 9:50 or 9:30 to 10:20 or 10:00 to 10:50 on either Wednesdays or Fridays
  • Math 10, 20, 95, 111, and higher need interested students to sign up. Several students have asked, but signing up makes it happen.
  • Medical Terminology needs three and there are three of you, so let's find a time that works for you.
9.  Are you using TRiO on a regular basis? Do you have any questions or confusion that you need to consult with us about? Are you starting to struggle in any classes? Now would be the right time to come in and develop strategies to be successful. Have a great week!   Warm Regards, Mary    Mary Parthemer, Director

October 19, 2009
Dear TRiO Students:   It so great to see so many of you working diligently in the TRiO Learning Center. We are very glad the 5:00 - 6:00 hour on Tuesdays is being used. That's the way to keep those later hours.

News for Week Four:   ADVANCE REGISTRATION for Winter term begins Tuesday,10/20/09 at 7:00 a.m. Be sure to get your classes planned, see an Advisor if needed, and register soon to have the best possible schedule. There has been a misunderstanding by some students in the past that they must have the current term totally paid off to advance register. That is not the case. You will have to pay off your fall balance by November 24th to keep your Advance Registration.

TRiO students have two days to register for Show Me the Money prior to it opening up to the general student body. The CRNS for this Scholarship Learning Community are CG 105: Money for College-31916  TR 1-150  and WR 105: Writing for Scholarships - 31562  TR 3:00-3:50.

PLANNING TO TRANSFER TO THE UNIVERSITY OF OREGON NEXT YEAR? An advisor from UO will be available October 26 from 1:00 - 5:00 in the Counseling Department (sign up there in advance). If you are planning to transfer Winter term, you are required to do an Orientation and they have one scheduled for November 20th. See information on attached flyer.   Mid-term Progress Reports--Be sure to pick up the forms from the front desk in the office, or at the check-in desk in the TLC. Distribute them to your instructors and ask them to complete them in the next few days. Please contact us when the cards are returned to you if you have any concerns about how you are doing in a class. There is time now to improve your performance!

Drop In tutoring: Good all day every day. Use it as much as you like. Just write your name, subject, and the time on the drop in board. Appointments (30-minutes uninterrupted time) require you to sign up in the book in the yellow colored areas only. You can have three per week.   Tip: Saving  Documents (Files) ~ Whenever you download a document from Moodle, your email, or anywhere else on the Internet, be sure to choose SAVE (not OPEN) in the dialog box. By choosing SAVE, your document will be placed in the My Documents folder on the desktop not in the TEMP folder, from which it will be dropped when you log off. BIG TIP: Whenever you choose SAVE AS, be sure to read the top line of the saving screen that begins with SAVE IN and select where you want to save the document--to My Documents or to your Flash Drive. That is the most important step, where you save. The second most important is to name that document something that refers directly to it. Don't just click SAVE, as all your documents are likely to have your name as the file name, that being the first thing typed on the page. Third is file type. Most are .doc (WORD Document) or .rtf, which is a format compatible with several word processing programs. Ask if you are unsure.   Thanks for sanitizing your hands before sitting down at the computers. When the TLC opens each day the keyboards and mice have been sanitized. Using the hand sanitizer assures you don't carry germs from door handles and anything else on campus into the TLC and onto the mice and keyboards.   PowerPoint Printing: Always get tutor help to print PowerPoint slides so that you have four to six slides per page and no dark backgrounds that waste enormous amounts of ink. The process is quite easy once a tutor shows you how to locate the commands on the tool bar.   Printing from the Web: Note the example of how not to print sitting above the printer. Please get a tutor to help you copy just what you need from any website and not all the extraneous information and pictures around the sides. You can easily paste the info you need into a Word document and save it.   Remind the Tutors of the need to document their assistance on your card every time, whether they answer a quick question or work with you for some minutes. Sometimes they are hurrying from one person to another, so please remind them to document their time with you as documentation is the basis for TRiO funding.   Study Groups are student generated: They are totally dependent on TRiO students signing up with available times. Keep signing up, as it often takes several people signing up to find three who can meet at the same time. Several students aren't signing up because no one else has so far, or not enough. That doesn't work, folks. If you are interested at all, put your name and times on the sign up sheet. Sometimes we even form two groups based on the times and number of people signed up. For those of you who are still hoping for a study group, don't forget to make appointments with tutors and to use the drop in time to stay up and ahead in your coursework, especially math. Groups formed so far: BT 226 with Liz from 3:00 to 3:50 meets Thursdays in 1/212 by restroom except 10/22 in 19/231J BA 172 with Liz from 3:00 to 3:50 meets Tuesdays in 19/231J in Coop except 1/212 on 11/3 and 12/1) Medical Terminology with Lynn from 12:00 to 12:50 on Fridays, room to be announced (TBA) Math 60 with Damien is scheduled from 9:30 to 9:20 Tuesdays, room TBA Math 65  with Lynn 9:00 to 9:50 Wednesdays, room TBA   Tuesdays until 6 pm with Matt: Take advantage of the quiet of late afternoons in the TLC, which is open until five Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. On Tuesdays the TLC stays open an extra hour, until six with Matt, who covers a lot of subjects. On Fridays the TLC closes at 4. It opens at 8:30 every weekday morning.

RECYCLE, Please! We need you to help with the recycling on campus. Do not throw your cans and plastic or glass bottles in the trash in the TLC, but take them down the hall to the blue bins. You walk right past them as they are in the main hall by the food kiosk and the veterans office. That helps tremendously and Lane recycles tons of waste each year, but we need your help to make it work.   Have a great week!   Warm regards, Mary

October 26, 2009

Dear TRiO Students:   Week 5! There is no doubt about it. This term is well underway! We look forward to seeing you all in the TLC preparing for your mid-terms.   If you are starting to struggle in any way, please contact Kate or Bree as soon as possible so they can help you plan how to get back on track. ADVANCE REGISTRATION for Winter term began Tuesday,10/20/09 at 7:00 a.m. Be sure to get your classes planned, see an Advisor if needed, and register soon to have the best possible schedule. Classes are starting to fill up. There has been a misunderstanding by some students in the past that they must have the current term totally paid off to advance register. That is not the case. You will have to pay off your fall balance by November 24th to keep your Advance Registration.   PLANNING TO TRANSFER TO THE UNIVERSITY OF OREGON NEXT YEAR?  If you are planning to transfer Winter term, you are required to do an Orientation and they have one scheduled for November 20th. See information on attached flyer.   FLASH PLAYER TIP ~ Video screening:  BT 114 and other courses require the latest Flash Player to view their videos. That version (10.0.32.18) is installed for your use, yet some of you have been having trouble. The recommendation is to use Microsoft Explorer instead of Firefox. For some reason the videos won't play if the student is using Firefox. These are also HUGE files and the screen may remain white for over five minutes as they load. Please be patient. Students can download the free 10.0.32.18 version of Flash Player from the Internet when at home.   Printing TIP ~  Moodle and websites:  Ask a tutor for help before you attempt to print. The bin by the printer is full of failed attempts to print long articles in a short format; unreadable sized fonts, extra info, only a portion of the page = wasted paper and ink. We appreciate your efforts, but please show you how. Tutors will show you how to get a clean, readable version in the size you need or just how to take the info from a long article and document your website. Whether it's a Moodle resource assignment or your own research, ask for help first.     Microwave courtesy: Please cover your food in the microwave and wipe it clean if you make a mess, even a small one. Please also clean the surface where you eat (allowed at white table only) to leave it clean for the next person sitting there. This helps everyone using the TLC food area.   Borrowing calculators, texts, and headphones: These must always be checked out from and returned to a tutor. You will need to give a tutor your I.D. card and be signed up on a list for using these items in the TLC. Please do not "help yourself" or take them from the TLC and when returning the item, always get a tutor to sign the item back in and return your I.D. card. This system protects you should these items go missing.   Tutor Evaluations start this week. Yellow evaluation forms are in a clip on each table, please fill them out to evaluate any tutors with whom you have worked this term. Be sure to use the 10-point scale for the box at the top of the evaluation. Then put the evaluations in the folder "Tutor Evaluations Here" attached to the side of Nancy's desk. Tutors will also ask you for evaluations. Evaluations are required for each tutor and help us do a better job of serving you in the TLC.   Drop In tutoring: Good all day every day. Use it as much as you like. Just write your name, subject, and the time on the drop in board. Appointments (30-minutes uninterrupted time) require you to sign up in the book in the yellow colored areas only. You can have three per week.   Tuesdays until 6 pm with Matt: Take advantage of the quiet of late afternoons in the TLC, which is open until five Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. On Tuesdays the TLC stays open an extra hour, until six with Matt, who covers a lot of subjects. On Fridays the TLC closes at 4. It opens at 8:30 every weekday morning.   Have a great week! Warm Regards, Mary

November 2, 2009

Dear TRiO Students:   Week 6!  We are on the downhill side of the term. Be sure you are keeping up with all class responsibilities. Are you taking good care of yourself to stay healthy? Lots of rest, good food, water?   If you are starting to struggle in any way, please contact Kate or Bree as soon as possible so they can help you plan how to get back on track.

UO SCHOLARSHIP INFO

Michelle Holdway, scholarship coordinator, from the University of Oregon will be presenting UO scholarship information for students transferring to the UO next fall on Wednesday, 11/18/2009 at 3:30-5 pm. Please contact Career and Employment services to register, 463.5164 or brysonj@lanecc.edu Deadlines for those scholarships are in January and early February, 2010.

Don't miss the Making Wise Choices Workshop on Friday November 13, from 1:00 - 2:00, in 1/224.

Making Wise Choices educates students on GPA calculation and the various grading options, including pass/no pass, withdrawals, and incomplete grades. We will review Financial Aid expectations for satisfactory academic progress (SAP); provide information on campus support services; and step students through a decision making process designed to help them make wise choices.  All before November 20, 2009, the final day to make schedule changes for fall term!

ADVANCE REGISTRATION for Winter term began Tuesday,10/20/09 at 7:00 a.m. Be sure to get your classes planned, see an Advisor if needed, and register THIS WEEK BEFORE FRIDAY to have the best possible schedule (new students begin registering on Firday). You will have to pay off your fall balance by November 24th to keep your Advance Registration.   Winter study group sign up sheets are out. If you have enrolled in an instructor-led course for math or science, you can sign up with all your available times. Just follow the instructions on the sign-up page. Using those times, we work to find a 50-minute weekly time for a group with a minimum of three students. Math 65 has interested parties already.   Welcome back, Sean: TRiO tutor Sean will return to the TLC beginning 11/6. Fridays from 1:00 to 4:00 will be his regular shift for the rest of the term. He will have two appointment times during his shift. For those of you who don't know him, be sure to check out his many tutoring skills in the appointment book or on the new TLC Schedule. With the return of Sean, Nancy's Friday shift is now from 9:00 to 1:00 in the TLC. The new schedule is posted in the TLC and also attached.   Evaluations for tutors are coming in, but please continue to evaluate tutors who help you. One per tutor, please, and remember to use the 10-point scale for the box at the top.   Printing from laptops is not possible in Lane's computer labs. You must save your documents to a flash drive and insert that into a TLC or other lab's computer or email documents to yourself and then log onto a lab computer and go to your email. If you don't know how to connect to the Internet when on campus, ask a tutor, as you need to go through a short process of registering your laptop. If you don't know how to attach documents, have a tutor teach you the simple process.   LOG OFF! Cant stress that enough. You leave all your personal information open to the public when you don't log off.  So, don't leave your seat with that pretty picture from Norway on the screen; you are still logged in.  Important: When you sit down at a computer, you need to see the log in screen and enter your ExpressLane L number and pin to log in. When you leave a computer, log off by clicking on start and then log off first on the start menu and then from the window that appears in the middle of the screen. Now you are safe and the computer is ready for the next user.     Support Tutoring at Lane. How? Easy! Look at the list of Tutoring Services courses on the typing stands at each computer station. Registration in any of these CRNs will not cost you any money or time, but it will result in Lane Community College getting dollars in reimbursement funding from the State of Oregon. These CRNs represent tutoring during Fall term, so register for FALL term if you had or expect to get help with any of these subjects (includes writing or computer help with subjects not listed).   See you in the TLC! Warm Regards, Mary

November 9, 2009

Campus Closed on Wed, 11/11. Thank you to all our Veteran's.   Evaluations for tutors are coming in, but please continue to evaluate tutors who help you. One per tutor, please, and remember to use the 10-point scale for the box at the top. Please get them in by the end of this week.   Taking a self-paced math course? TRiO tutors are here and ready to serve your needs. Self-paced math courses leave you pretty much on your own and at the mercy of the very busy MRC. So, use your time wisely and make appointments (you get 3 per week) and use the all day drop-in tutoring available in the TLC. The TRiO tutors can explain the tough stuff and keep you on course. There are several tutors to choose from, so try t hem out and choose your favorite or use them all, but use them, that's the key to success.     Cell phones: The TLC is a cell-phone silent zone. Please turn them off or on vibrate before entering the TLC. Thanks!   Label all your food and drinks in the fridge, so we know whose is whose. Please also remember to toss out your used drink cups and take bottles and cans to the recycle bins down the hall. Thanks!   Have a great week. Let us know if there is anything we can do to support you. You have registered for Winter term, right?!   Warm Regards, Mary
