Dear TRiO Students:

We are on the downhill side of the term now. And the second half of the term typically goes faster than the first half, so it is critical to be on top of assignments, papers, studies. It has been great to see so many of you using TRiO. Keep it up.

News for the week:
1. VOTE! But be sure to turn your ballot into one of the drop boxes around town. It is too late to mail it.

2. Thanks to those of you who have been turning in your mid-term progress reports. Please make sure to get them into each instructor and get them back and turn them into us this week.

3. If you want of the last few slots in Show Me the Money, get signed up this week. We will open those slots up to any students (not just TRiO students) if they don't fill soon.

4. Be sure to attend any appointment that you schedule, especially the Intake appointments. You risk losing your spot in TRiO if you miss your Intake appointment. Our staff time is extremely limited, and it ends up being wasted time when students do not show to their appointments. Please show us respect by showing up.

5. Are you registered for winter term? If not, NOW is the time! Get in to see an advisor or counselor if you need to.

6. Appointment Scheduling in the TLC: Several students have had questions about making appointments with tutors. We hope this will help. You are entitled to three 30-minute appointments each week, but please realize you need to space them out in consideration of other students. To be fair, we ask you don't sign up for more than one appointment for a given tutor in one day or for all that tutor's appointment times at the same time throughout the week (i.e. at 10:00 on MWF or at 2:00 on both T and R of one tutor's shift). If one student always takes the same time on MWF or TR, that time is unavailable for other students who may only have that time of day or need that tutor. However, if no one signs up, anyone can take it at the last minute.

7. Tutor Evaluations. Now that you have had time to work with several tutors, please evaluate the tutors you have worked with this term. Use the yellow forms found on each table to evaluate each tutor individually. The upper boxed part of the evaluation asks you to rate the tutors in the 1-2-3 format. Please use that format and don't use check marks. You may use two forms if any tutor has helped you in two completely different subjects. You can be anonymous or sign the evaluation. Put the completed evaluations in the folder attached to the side of Nancy's desk in the TLC. Tutors will also ask you to fill out the evaluation forms, as ten evaluations are required of them each term.

8. Congratulations to Shyanne Woods, who entered TRiO this fall. Shyanne is the first TRiO student this term to require a second card to document her tiime in the TLC. Shyanne has logged over 26 hours in TLC use this term.

9. Next Tuesday, November 11, is Veteran's Day, a federal holiday and the college is closed. Veterans--please accept our thanks for your service.

Have a great week. Please vote today if you have not done so already. Take good care,

Warm Regards, Mary

Dear TRiO Students:

Happy mid-term! We are in Week five--the term is moving along rapidly.

1. Have you Advance Registered for Winter Term? If not, what's getting in your way of advance registering? Get your classes lined up. If you need to see your advisor, do so this week. Then be sure to pay off your fall term balance by midnight, November 25th. If you have a balance owed on November 26th, your advance registration will be dropped.

2. Be sure to submit the Mid-Term Progress Report Forms to your instructors this week. Drop them off  in the TRiO office when you get them back from instructors.

3. There are still a few slots in Show Me the Money! Please register soon if you are interested in being in that Scholarship Learning Community.

4. Returning TRiO Students: If you have NOT done your Fall Check-In, please contact us now to do so.

5. Study Groups: Don't wait for a study group to form to get help. Start using tutors today! In the TLC, you have tutors all day for drop in questions, plus you can make three 30-minute appointments each week with the tutors you need. Study groups are great, but they are student-generated; that is, they depend on students' schedules. If the interested students don't have a time slot that works, a study group won't be possible. But, you won't get behind if you are working with the tutors in the TLC. ~~Math 65 meets Tuesdays from 11:30 to 12:20 in Bldg 1, Room 212. ~~Math 95 - Interest but no times that work yet. Sign up with your available times. ~~Biobonds - Has not been able to form, but do meet with Lynn when you can in the TLC.

6. TLC Cards. Getting your card out? If you take all the cards of a section to find your card, please be sure you put them back in that section . . .  behind the letter. Please display your TLC card wherever you sit in the TLC. This reminds tutors to always mark your cards when they help you. Don't forget to put the date and arrival time on them as soon as you enter the TLC and your time out when you leave.  If you return before the cards have been tallied and returned to the box, your card will be in the return file and you can just take it. If you take your card from the group of clipped cards, please don't put it back in the clipped group, which is ready to be entered into the computer. Your card will need to be tallied again. Drop it in the stand up file.

7. Bottles and cans are recycled down the hall by the snackshack. Please take your empties down to these containers when you leave the TLC and use the trash can in the TLC for trash. We have a paper recycle box in the TLC, so please recycle  only paper in that. Thanks!

8. Please VOTE!  BALLOT BOX ON CAMPUS
The "unofficial" ballot drop box has been set up in the hallway outside of room 206, Student Life and Leadership Development, in building 1. Last pickup and delivery will be November 4 at 5 p.m. Remember, if you mail your ballots, the cost will be $.59 cents. If there are enough requests, a ballot box can be added at the Book Consignment in the Center Building. Contact Bette Dorris, 5365.

9. IT'S SCHOLARSHIP SEASON
Career and Employment Services is offering the following scholarship workshops: October 30, November 12 (featuring the UO scholarships) and December 11. To sign-up contact CES at 463-5164 or email Jackie Bryson at brysonj@lanecc.edu   Oregon Health Care Foundation has a few scholarships with deadlines of November 15. Take a look at them at http://www.ohcfonline.org/sub2.php?id=23   Have a great week, and keep up the great work!

Warm regards, Mary

Dear TRiO Students:

Here it is Week Four and things will be ramping up a bit. I'm sure that most of you now have mid-terms scheduled, and those will be going on for the next two or three weeks. Be sure to use the TLC to prepare well for exams, papers and projects.

News for the Week:   1. TRiO Open House, Tuesday, October 21, 12:30 - 1:30. Please come by to say hi, have some food, and sign up to win a door prize!

2. Mid-Term Progress Report Time: Now is the time to turn your mid-term progress report forms into your instructors and request to get them back in the next week or so. If you don't yet have your Mid-term progress report forms, pick them up in the TRiO Office or on the check-in desk in the TLC. If you get any back from instructors and are not doing as well as you want to be doing, come in to discuss what some strategies might be.

3. Show Me the Money! There is a section of Show Me the Money, the scholarship learning community, dedicated for TRiO students. The schedule is Monday 10 - 12 for CG105 CRN 31808, and Wed/Fri 11-12 for WR105 CRN 31864. You must sign up for both classes. If you are interested in participating in Show Me the Money, be sure to notify Marla so she can release you to register. There is a prerequisite required - successful completion of WR115 or above, or tested into WR121.

4. Advance Registration begins Tuesday, 10/21/08 at 7:00 a.m. Are you ready to register for Winter classes? If you were new in fall term, you must see an advisor or counselor to be released for winter and spring registration.

5. Using TRiO Services? Remember -- the more you use TRiO, the higher your chances are of being successful. Are you using the TRiO services as much as you committed to when your Student Support Plan was developed? If not, now is the time to get in and use it!

6.  TLC Computers. This has been a most unusual and distressing situation for students hoping to use them and the IT staff trying to fix them. The fix last Friday didn't hold, but the IT team is trying a new approach today. We have some really quiet times for computer use when we first open, at lunch, and during the last three hours of the day. You may want to visit the TLC during these times to catch the working computers. Hopefully, they will all be working by midweek.

7. Make room, please. Sometimes the TLC gets pretty crowded, so please make room for others by taking your belongings to the computer if you are working there (they fit underneath) and not leave them taking up usable space at a vacant table. Students arriving think there is no room for them to work. The same goes for the eating table. If you are not eating, and there is room at another table, please keep that table available for students who want to eat in the TLC. The table by the hall entrance into the TLC is reserved for the appointments held throughout the day. Please check with a tutor if that is the only space available. If there is no appointment scheduled, students can sit there until the next appointment.

8. TLC Tutor Schedule. The new version posted in the TLC and attached to this email is the tutor schedule for the remainder of the term. You will see Meghan's hours have increased on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Check the tutor skills to find tutors for  your subjects and arrange your time to be here when they are. Take advantage of the all-day drop in tutoring (as many times as you need) and the three half-hour appointments you can sign up for each week.

9. NetStorage: No Mystery. Use it at Lane and use it at home. The Home@IC_TREE has the work you saved at Lane under your L#, and getting into NetStorage from home is easy. You can open documents saved under your L# at Lane when you are at home. You can also upload your documents from home to the NetStorage database at Lane by using the NetStorage command tool bar above the white field (right side). Here's a step-by-step instructional that is easy too learn. Practice makes it easy.   LOG IN to NetStorage 1. log into Lane's home page 2011sitearchive.lanecc.edu 2. click on "Quicklinks" on the right of the homepage 3. click on "Departments and Services" 4. click on the "I" to take you to the "I" list of departments 5. click on 'Instructional Computing" 6. on the left under Links, click on "NetStorage Information" 7. click on the red link saying "log into NetStorage" 8. log in using your L# and pin 9. click on Home@IC_TREE in either the grey or white area to see your stored files

10. log out by clicking on the log out box in the grey zone above your field. It will say "log out" when your curser rides over it.   UPLOADING to NetStorage from HOME 1) click on "File" 2) Click on "upload" (If you get a pop-up blocker above your upload screen, disable it) 3) click on browse to find the folder on youro home computer in which you have the document you wish to upload (in My Documents, on your flash drive, or even from on your desktop) 4) click on upload and your document will be saved from your home computer to the NetStorage. Notice the check box asking if you wish the new document to replace an existing one. This is a warning to alert you that saving a newer version will replace an older version, and normally, that is what you want.   Take good care of yourself, stay healthy, and keep steadily working.

Warm Regards, Mary

Dear TRiO Students:

Wow-here we are already starting Week Three. The term flies by, so be sure you are practicing strategies that will help you be successful. Are you using TRiO on a regular basis? Do you have any questions or confusion that you need to consult with us about? Are you starting to struggle in any classes? Now would be the right time to come in and develop strategies to be successful.   Here is Week Three news:

  1. Advance Advising for Winter term begins tomorrow. Advance Registration begins next Tuesday, 10/21/08, 7:00 a.m.
  2. Welcome to Janelle Raimer, our new work-study student who will be helping in the TRiO office. Stop by to say hello to Janelle.
  3. PLEASE--if you have NOT yet done your fall check-in appointment, CALL NOW--463-3131--to schedule it. Once you schedule it, please show for it.
  4. Computer problems in TLC are fixed. Thanks for your patience last week as we continued to have trouble with the west wall of computers. They have finally accepted their new settings.
  5. Study Groups are starting to form.  Study groups work especially well for structured math and science courses, as students meet once each week for 50 minutes with a TRiO tutor to go over homework, prepare for tests, and just learn the material. Right now there are students looking to start study groups for Math 20, Math 65, Math 95, Anatomy and Physiology 1, Biobonds, Spanish 101. Study groups are student-generated; you must put your available times for each day to create options from which that one hour can be found.
  6. ~Math 65 Study Group has formed and meets 11:30 to 12:20 each Tuesday. Room to be announced.
  7. ~Math 95 needs one more person to form a group meeting from 11:00 to 11:50 Thursdays.
  8. Tutoring Appointments = Student Success. Appointments with tutors assure you understand your materials. Each TRiO student is entitled to three appointments each week with a TRiO tutor. Sign up in the appointment book in the yellowed blocks. Use pencil, and if you don't need the appointment when the time comes, please erase your name or call us to erase it if you are sick or otherwise cannot attend.
  9.  MS 2007 throwing you for a loop? Make appointments with Meghan and Liz, our 2007 experts to walk you through the new format and help you become a competent user. Most TRiO tutors can help you with the basics. Just put your name on the  drop-in board if you have a quick question; a tutor will come to your aid.
  10. Drop-in tutoring is available all day long in the TLC. Just sign up on the board with your first name and the subject matter and the time. A tutor will be with you within a few minutes if not immediately. Sign up as often as you need.
  11. Sign in/Sign out. Log in/log out. Always put your arrival time and your leaving time on your TLC card. TRiO funding is dependent on that documentation. Keep your cards out and with you wherever you sit while in the TLC. And, don't forget to log in and log out on the computers. Be sure to start with the log in screen and finish with the log in screen back on the desktop. If you don't log out, other people may accidentally save their work under your L# and lose it. Also, if you don't log out, your information is available to any who then use that computer.
  12. Sanitary lunch table. Students have asked that backpacks and purses (two items that see a lot of floors) not be set on the lunch table. The table is sanitized daily, and we try to keep it clean in that it is the only place to eat. Please remember to clean up after you eat at the table and if you have any spillover in the microwave. Thanks!
  13. TRiO Open House, next Tuesday, 10/21/08, 12:30 - 1:30. Come by to say hello, have a snack, and enter to win a door prize.  Have a great week!

Warm Regards, Mary

October 6, 2008

Dear TRiO Students:

Whew...we made it through Week One! It was great to see so many of you making good use of the TLC last week and establishing your good study habits. Fantastic! If you haven't yet made it in, come in this week.

Week Two News:

1. Schedules should be set now. Whatever you are enrolled in today is the number of credits you will be funded for through Financial Aid (if you are receiving Financial Aid). Be sure you talk to us before you make any further changes in your schedule this term, or if you begin to struggle in any of your classes. We will help you plan what to do to ensure you stay in good standing with Financial Aid.

2. Pick up your current term sticker for your bus pass beginning tomorrow at the Bookstore return window. You must have your LCC Bus Pass and student identification "L" number when you get a sticker. Stickers must be attached before October 11 to ride the bus. You will not be able to get a sticker for another person. Keep your bus pass and get new stickers each term.

3. Math Magic Workshop, Wednesday 10/8/08, 2:00 - 3:00 in 1/216, with Amanda. Get great tips and strategies for succeeding in your Math classes.

4. TRiO Fall Open House has been rescheduled to Tuesday, October 21, 12:30 - 1:30. Put in on your calendar and come by for a snack, to say hi to TRiO staff, tutors and students, and to get a chance to win a door prize.

5. Advance Advising begins Tuesday, October 14.  If you are a new Lane student this year, or you did not do Advance Registration for Fall term, you will need to see your Advisor to develop a Class Planner, have it signed, and be released to Advance Register for Winter and Spring terms.  If your Advisor is Kate or Bree, please schedule your appointment to see them as soon as possible. Advance Registration begins at 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 21st.  Not sure if you are released to Advance Register?  Check on ExpressLane.  Even if you are released, you may want to see your Advisor if you have questions about your class schedule.

6.  Are you interested in enrolling in "Show Me the Money!", the scholarship learning community offered in Winter term?  Be sure to sign up on the interest list in the TLC so that you can be released to register.  You must have passed WR 115 or tested into WR 121, and it is recommended that you have a fairly clear idea about your academic and career goals.  Sixty-eight percent of TRiO students who were awarded scholarships for the 2006-07 year took the class!  If you can't take the four-credit Learning Community, there will be Scholarship Workshops available in Winter term. The first TRiO Scholarship workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, December 17th, 1:00 - 2:30. Sign up in the TLC.

7. MS Office 2007 has been installed in the TLC. All computers except the MAC and the Wynn by the printer have been converted to date. If you have MS Office 2003 at home, no problem. MS 2007 has the option for you to save your work as "Word 97-2003." Liz and Meghan are your 2007 experts, but all TRiO tutors can assist you.

8. The TLC tutor schedule for week 2 is displayed on the information table in the middle of the room. We expect to have a permanent schedule by next week and will send that out to you in this newsletter. Meanwhile, you can check who tutors what and when that tutor is available and plan your time in the TLC to work for you. There are tutors available to help in Math, Science, Computer Science, Writing, Social Sciences, Stats, Spanish, Internet Research, Moodle and more! Attached you will find a list with the TRiO Tutors and the subjects they tutor.

9. Tutor Appointments start with Week 2. You are entitled to three  half-hour appointments each week. The tutor book is on the information table. Please follow the instructions to sign up for your  appointments each week. Sign up only in the yellow blocks with your first and last names and take only one appointment with any one tutor on a given day. Don't forget, if you can't make your appointment, you want to cancel so as not to lose that privilege. Appointments time is a sure way to success.

10. Study Groups are also a way to student success.  Study groups work especially well for math and science courses as students meet once each week for 50 minutes with a TRiO tutor to go over homework, prepare for tests, and just learn the material. Right now there are students looking to start study groups for Math 20, Math 65, Math 95, Anatomy and Physiology 1, Biobonds, Spanish 101.   Study Groups Interest: You must put available times for each day to create options. We usually also form a Math 60 group, so if you are interested and enrolled in a structured class, sign up this week. If you did not put your available blocks of time, please do so now. We can't form a group without them.

11. NetStorage. Save your work under your L#, also known as My Documents, but not on the hard drive of a TLC computer. Your My Documents is in the NetStorage and is accessible from home. Ask tutors to show you how to connect to the NetStorage from off campus and how to save your work while you are here. Back up the info on your flash drives as those little things get lost or left at home and all the work you've saved on them. NetStorage is the way to go!

12. Are you registered to vote? If you have changed your address, remember to re-register to vote for the November election! http://www.oregonvotes.org/votreg/vreg.htm

13. Did you get the Higher One Debit Card? Did you go on-line to select how you want to get your Financial Aid? This is very important. Don't ignore this. Need help? Go to the lobby of Building 1 and there are Student Service Associates who will help you.   Have a great week! We look forward to seeing you in the TLC!

Warm Regards, Mary
