1. Discuss how the group will operate
Hayward reviewed the group's discussion during the last meeting about how it will operate. The group will have a Traditional Steering Committee with a Chair but that subcommittees could operate with a Living System, a Traditional Model, or a Wilderness model (whichever is most appropriate for the particular subcommittee). Hayward reviewed different possible levels of participation in the sustainability group. The different avenues for participation included:
  • Steering Committee memberSubcommittee member in a particular interest areaParticipate in helping out with projects in specific interest areasAvailable to volunteer for events or work parties
  • Help with communications.
Hayward distributed a sign up sheet on which attendees noted the level(s) at which they would like to participate.

2. Debrief on Fall Welcome Table
Attendees commented that the cup give away and cup pyramid were both worthwhile and attracted interest. Attendees made the following are suggestions for next time.

  • Flyer at the table that says when regular meetings areCompost demonstrationHave people indicate their area of interest on the sign up sheet next timeJoint table with the Campus Ecology Club and the Green Chemistry Club
  • Information/Poster about the model sustainability building that is currently in schematic design phase

3. Transportation opportunities
Hayward reviewed two sustainable transportation opportunities that had recently been presented to the college. The first opportunity is called The RideShare Alliance. It is an online ridesharing resource that allows organizations to register an event and coordinate rideshares online. The group recommended that Lane participate in this online resource. Hayward will obtain approval from Marie Matsen.

The second opportunity is a City of Eugene Business Commute Challenge in which local organizations compete to have the largest percentage of employees commuting to work by an alternative to driving alone. The challenge begins on October 11. Attendees decided that the Challenge was happening too soon to be properly promoted and coordinated. Attendees agreed that we should participate in the Challenge next year. Attendees also recommended that Lane conduct it's own commute challenge this year. Demers will determine ASLCC's interest in participating or co-coordinating such a challenge.

4. Upcoming events
Hayward reported on several upcoming sustainability education events.
Bioneers Conference: The Bioneers Conference is taking place October 15-17, 2004 in Lane's Center for Meeting and Learning. The registration fee is $100. The conference includes satellite presentations from some of the countries leading sustainability experts. Hayward noted that the sustainability program would be willing to sponsor a group member to attend this conference. Members will contact Hayward if they would like to attend. For more information members should visit the Bioneers website at http://www.bridgingworldsnw.org.

SCUP Campus Sustainability Day webcast: The Society for College and University Planning is offering a webcast titled, "Sustainable Building and Design on Campus-Building A Restorative Educational Environment" on Wednesday, October 20, 2004 from 10:00 am-11:30 am. Hayward will distribute the website to the group and participants will indicate whether they would attend and/or promote on campus.

Sustainability and Higher Education Conference: This conference sponsored by the Education for Sustainability Western Network is taking place October 21-23, 2004 in Portland. Marie Matsen has offered that the sustainability program will fund attendance for members of this group. Several members have already registered to attend. Additional members will contact Hayward if they are interested in attending.

Lane Community College Model Sustainability Building: Hayward announced that the Energy Management Program has hired architectural and engineering firm, SOLARC to develop conceptual plans for a Model Sustainability Building for Lane. SOLARC has had two meetings with representatives from the college and presented preliminary ideas. The next meeting with SOLARC is scheduled for Tuesday, October 26 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm in Building 19, Room 220. The sustainability group is invited to attend this meeting to share ideas or to just learn more about the project.

5. Review water & landscape indicators
Hayward reviewed the Water & Landscape Maintenance Indicator reports. Members discussed whether using ozone in the laundry to reduce water use is environmentally preferable to using chlorine. Fern will research the impacts of both products and provide the committee with a recommendation. Haenelt noted that she review the Landscape Maintenance Indicator report with Grounds Lead, Frank Drengacz, and has several corrections to submit. Haenelt briefly reviewed her comments & corrections. Haenelt will meet with Hayward by 10/8/04 to provide final comments and corrections.

Hayward noted that indicator reports for Energy, Water, Recycling Rate, Landscape Maintenance, and Transportation are now in final or final draft form. Hayward will e-mail these reports to the group. Attendees agreed that the next meeting should be spent using the indicator reports to develop goals.

Russin requested that the group also finalize the Waste Water Treatment Indicator Report. A subgroup will meet to work on this report on Thursday, October 14 from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm.
[NOTE: This meeting time has since been changed to Friday, October 15 from 2:30 to 3:30 pm.]

6. Green-bag lunches
Attendees discussed plans for a Green-bag Lunch on Native Landscaping. Baker explained that she would like to do a 30-minute PowerPoint presentation on the native landscaping project at Lane. Baker said that she could also have handouts on nurseries that sell native plants for those interested in incorporating natives into their home landscaping. Baker will prepare a brief description of the event that Hayward can submit to the Daily and use for other promotions. Members will provide Baker with ideas for a catchy title for the description. Members agreed that the green-bag lunch would take place on Friday, October 29 from 12:00 to 1:00 pm. In Building 16 Room 111 or 115. Dumbleton will let Hayward know which room to reserve.

Members also discussed holding a green-bag lunch on biodiesel. Dumbleton noted that a part-time instructor who is knowledgeable about biodiesel is interested in presenting at such an event. Hayward will ask Lane's Diesel instructors if they would be interested in participating &/or having their students participate. After talking to the Diesel instructors, Hayward will schedule the event for sometime in November.

Members proposed that the "Green-bag Lunch" should be a regular monthly offering of the sustainability group and suggested that Marie Matsen ask Tracy Simms if the monthly sustainability green-bag lunch event could be a regular event listed on the Lane home page.

7. Next meeting
Members agreed to set regular sustainability group meeting times on the 2nd & 4th Thursdays of the month from 2 to 3:30 pm.
